It's an intriguing, dark take on the genre (call it mecha if you like, though it's unlike anything you've read/seen before). In a way it's a collection of stories about 15 (give or take) children, all tied together by the red line running through the story. As more and more information gets out about what's behind Zearth and it's opponents, things turn out to be very different than they seemed at first.
I have to say I'm not a big fan of Mohiro Kitoh; he can get extremely preachy in his storytelling. And the art is very minimalistic and sterile, though I'm not sure if I would call it bad. It's an acquired taste, which will probably appeal to seinen fans who consider good writing more important. I do however like the designs of the "robots"; very slender, insect-like contraptions.
All in all it's a decent manga, that manages to fascinate and bore me equally. It's really hit and miss with the backstory of a pilot.

Wellm subject says everything.. its great. If you like psychological drama, go for it - altrough its pretty depressing at times. Plus, I think they should make kids younger, because their minds are pretty mature and they must deal with mature matters in story.. so why not make them two or three years older?smile

[edit by mod,possible spoiler]

From Narutaru mangaka Mohiroh Kito comes yet another enthralling manga. I read up to chapter 30. It shares much in common with Narutaru as it delves into the psychology of each teenager and the problems they face before they're forced to pilot Zearth. Because even if they win not a happy ending awaits them. In the end of volume 5 more about the game's plot is revealed. The manga will probably have as many volumes as Shadow Star and till know it is as good as the former in making the reader feel like reading a psychological thriller.
Character developement is outstanding as each character has a distinct personality and psychological problems. Some of them manage to overcome them, others dont.

If you liked Narutaru I'm sure you'll enjoy this even more. In terms of character developement it's on par with Evangelion manga and even better in some cases. I dont like mecha manga or anime but for this I'll make an exception
