Description
Sawako Kuronuma is the perfect heroine... for a horror movie. With her jet-black hair, sinister smile and silent demeanor, she's often mistaken for the haunting movie character Sadako. But behind her scary facade is a very misunderstood teenager. Too shy to fit in, all she wants to do is make some friends. But when a popular boy in class befriends her, she's sure to make more than just that--she's about to make some enemies too!

In 2008 it won the Best Shoujo Manga award in the 32nd Annual Kodansha Manga Award. The series was also nominated for the first Manga Taisho awards in 2008.

It's pure, simplistic and refreshing. However I think what I'm not use to about it is that it's slow and it takes a while to develop.

For those of you claiming it's not cliche, truth is, it is. But as there are some who mentioned, the way its presented makes it original and unique. I dropped it after the third volume because I found it boring but I think I might pick it up again considering I have so much time.

I recommend it even though I found it boring because it's slow-paced. I know that a lot of shoujo fanatics would love it. Girls in shoujo mangas are always naive, but I think what makes Sawako stand out from the rest is her personality. She's not obnoxious but she's humble, modest and meek. And I suppose this is what really connects her with the readers.

I really love the characters, they're real and they pop out of the page.

EDIT: So I gave it another chance and reread it. My heart is exploding from the sweet fluffiness and I guess I have also joined the group of fangirls. It's so heartwarming and endearing. I absolutely love the anime btw.

First of all, if you're not a shoujo fan, I probably wouldn't read it. Because you will feel disgusted by the sweet shoujo-ness that oozes out of it every chapter.
But for shoujo fans, I would recommend it. NOTE: It does move slower than other shoujos. This is NOT, as some may believe, a drag on the story however, it is the author's attempt to develop all the characters. In this story, the side characters aren't ornaments that need to be paired off with each other––they each have their own struggles and their interactions with the main characters help all of them grow in their own ways. Yes, there are several misunderstandings, but taking the context of the story and character's individual personalities into mind, THEY ARE BOUND TO HAPPEN. It would be ridiculous if the author suddenly threw away Sadako's innocence and naivete and Kazehaya's insecurities. I found the story somewhat refreshing, as far as the characters and character developments go, but the plot is so-so. Overall?
Characters: 9.5. I don't give this score often, but the way she develops the characters is actually quite realistic. My sincerest apologies if you don't appreciate this.
Plot: 6.8. It's a shoujo high school romance. The characters save the plot from becoming a 5 or 6.
Art: For me, at least a 9. But to each her own.

My advice? It's not exactly a new thing to shoujo. But it is adorable, and the characters are all likeable in their own ways if you open your mind to it. However, as for all shoujos, it's not for everyone.

I really enjoyed this in the beginning. I really liked the characters and the style of their relationship-- I love love love romances which involve the two people growing and improving through knowing each other (not just making gooey eyes and acting like retards).

All was fine and dandy, and Sawako and Shouta were getting along adorably, when up sprang an interminable arc in which they both angsted, interminably, about whether or not the other one liked them.

Now, this arc was a shock to me in part because I had actually forgotten that Sawaka and Shouta hadn't officially started dating yet...since it was THAT obvious that their relationship was already one of mutual affection...

But in general the entire thing felt contrived, and ridiculous. So I waited, impatiently, for it to end so that we could get back to the actual story.

And waited.
And waited.
And waited.

Eventually I gave up. But it is a pity...

I admit that I definitely did push this series aside because I thought it was boring and really slow-paced but after some persuasion from a friend of mine, I decided to give it a try and honestly, it's one of the cutest manga I've ever read. Sure, the romance is slow and the misunderstandings in this series really agitated me but in some sense, I thought that it was realistic and showed developments in each characters. Speaking of characters, Sawako is really adorable. Sure, she's not physically strong but mentally, I think she's the strongest of all. She has never let anything anybody said phases her. And she only takes them as encouragement and is really hardworking, which is an amazing trait for a female lead. Shouta, on the other hand, has got to be the most perfect male lead EVER. He is sooooo cute and like Sawako said, extremely refreshing. The way the mangaka drew him.. god, he's adorable. And I'm always smiling whenever he smiles hehe. Anyways, my biasness aside, I found the other characters really lovable as well. Including Sawako's 'rival' Kurumi. I think the charm of the series itself is how innocent and pure it is. The art and main characters gives off a very fresh and.. honest feeling. Or maybe it's just me lol. All in all, I really enjoyed this manga and I'm trying to wait patiently for the next chapter to come out biggrin I find Sawako & Shouta's relationship so lovable and despite what everyone said, very enjoyable and not boring at all. I mean, I'm tired of mangas that has the leads jump right into a relationship after meeting each other. imo, those are cute.. for awhile. But nothing's better than a sweet, realistic romance like Kimi ni Todoke.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Alright so maybe their romance was a bit slow.. it took him 30 chapters to confess and10 more for them to actually go out.. LOL. But it was cute nevertheless.

i would say its a very cute manga, but reeeally boring if you watch it in a three days in a row...there is no action, everything revolves around misunderstandings, its a vicious circle, because when finally SOMETHING starts to happen, after a second, the story goes back to the begining, its really frustrating...but actually, i would still recommend it, if you are patient and love a cute romance smile

I like this type of manga, i'm addicted to shoujo.
I like the first volumes, maybe till the 9th one, but we're now to the 14th volume and i have to say that not really much happened. I'm getting sick of sawako. She was so cute in the beginning and she is still cute but now it's boring.
I was about to stop reading it but in the last release the story of some of the side characters grow further so i'll stick a little more.

é,é I didn't find Kazehaya or Sawako dumb or anything in fact this story is one of those naive, cute, innocent, pure, sweet, & very nice.

First one I'll write something about the GUYS.
KAZEHAYA= a guy that doesn't know what to do but he does what he wants with her (not kissing her, touching her too much, just BEING NICE, TALKING TO HER, SMILING TO HER, BEING THERE FOR HER!), and he also thinks of her and he's a guy (he says what he means! most of the guys say something and do something as if they were girls é,é).
SAWAKO= She's a good girl, if she knows she's wrong she says SORRY, she's not dumb or anything in fact she's smart just a little bit clumsy when it comes to love (but she accepts her feelings and DO something about them!)
The FRIENDS= those two girls are like really popular, strong and nice. They gave her a second time and accept the girl, they are really GOOD FRIENDS, they LET SAWAKO DO HER THING BUT STILL STAND UP FOR HER WHEN THE TIME IS NEED.
THAT RYUU GUY= he's such an adorable character é,é I mean he's like a prince.~~

the story just make me feel like there are guys that can be there for the girls.

it's just really cute, n_n

Sawako could be a real character, I actually used be like Sawako when I was child, until I changed...
She is one of those few & unique characters that would scarcely exist in the real world, there's millions of people out there, why could there not be a "Sawako?" What's not realistic in Kimi ni Todoke is that poor Sawako would actually get eaten alive in "the real world," people aren't that nice & innocent...

Anyways, she grew up naive & innocent because she didn't experience certain stuff that most teens & children do.
And Sawako probably grew up with protective parents that didn't tell her about the cruelties of the world, they probably never told her about sex! She's living almost like a hermit & she's the way she is because since her parents haven't shown her the cruelties & stuff of the world or she hasn't experience such "bad" things herself. She sees it still the world beautiful, like a born child does. She's just not... "experienced," she's not yet... "tainted." She's still pure, & I'm very attractive to purity so I guess that's why I like Sawako very much. ♥

And I can totally relate to Sawako, though we aren't 100% alike, I know why she is the way she is, & hope she doesn't change because she is beautiful, kind, & pure. And I bet she could probably kick a** if her friends were in trouble.

So, yeah, there could be a "Sawako" out there or someone similar to her. I have a friend who's 16 & she's very kind, but naive & innocent (really she is, if you'd ask her a rhetorical question she'd actually answer & everyone says she has the mind of a child & other stuff), like Sawako, because of her overly protective & strict parents. She's not a lot like Sawako but she's similar in a way.

Now, anwyays, I like how sweet & refreshing this manga can be, it makes me smile when I read/watch Kimi ni Todoke because of Sawako's good heart. Not only do I obviously like Sawako, but I like her friends as well, especially Kurumi, not actually a friend but I like her, who I find more realistic than the bunch. The art is good & the story's alright. The sweetness, innocence, & happiness that obviously seeps through the pages is what I love most. ♥

Alright, now, time to get back to reality.

This manga started out adorable and refreshing. The art is very pretty and the manga had a 'breezy first love' sort of atmosphere. However, after we finally get what we anticipate in the manga, you lose interest.. well at least i did.
