At the age of sixteen Ryo Narushima was a genius and looked to have no trouble of getting into Tokyo University and joining the elite of society. However, that summer something cracked inside Ryo's head. With a small knife he brutally murdered both of his parents only leaving his sister alive and cowering in a corner. It is at this grotesque incident that our story begins.

Extra Note: At volume 20, the series changed publishers, which created a restart of the chapter numbers.

Starting from chapter 61 in volume 26, the first chapter from when the series returned from a long hiatus, the series has been completely written & drawn by Tanaka Akio. While Hashimoto Izou did write the series in the beginning, he had been doing less and less work starting from volume 4. Tanaka & Hashimoto reached a settlement and Shamo continued.

Read up to chapter 164, look at the last page - nice isn't it ? Memorize it cause you won't see it again. After that chapter the manga goes on a slippery slope (to quote the main (anti)hero),

8/10 till aforementioned chapter (deduct 4 after that)

one of the best i ever read
great story, no bullshiting and very realistic
plot is deep and can leave a big impresion on a kid who only knows the bright side of life
i recommend this series to everyone who likes a lot of violence in mangas

Meh, it had a fairly interesting start and wasn't too shabby at all. However, the story started to fizzle out along the way and it started to have endless fights: sorry but even many series with fighting scenes at least attempt to have some resemblance of plot/story.

After a while, I'd absolutely no idea what was going on anymore and dumped the manga.

This series started out with about being able to survive but now it is like a baki style martial arts manga. The story goes up and down. Is Ryo buff or weak? This is a confusing manga that doesn't seem like the story has a real goal.

The ugly truth of humanity. And Shamo makes it look good.

People will never be completely satisfied. First people compain about stories being to unrealistic. Now they complain about a character that's too human.

Shamo does something that few manga have tried and even fewer have made remotely interesting; and that thing is displaying a realistic world portraying the ugly side of humanity. This manga isn't about growth or overcoming odds. If you want that, go pick up some generic shonen or Naruto (which is great in its own right ). There is "good guy" there is no "bad guy" only people. And that's what makes Shamo unique.

About the setback that was most likely do to the change in serializations and publishers. I got the feeling the mangaka was writing himself into a hole with Ryo getting stronger and stronger everytime; fighting tougher opponents unti lhe would probably end up at DBZ-like proportions. He saw the chance to set things right and jumped on it. I can't blame him.

Toto, you speak out my confusion. How did Ryo degenerate so much? His chinese material arts havent benefitted him in any way. Until now i thought i might just have missed some important part on the story but you approve my suspicion. Its a pity because its not logial for Ryo to downgrade in the way it happens to him.

great fights and great plot , the main character is new for me you would always see the good guy type but this main character is one bad motha****er so you either love the manga or just hate it , the only bad thing is :

the latest volumes Ryo became a wimpy loser goddamn i thought he would be super powerful after he learned that chinese guys martial arts but he went backwards instead of forward oh well i hope he returns to his awsomness

I thought this was going to be about character growth. Well the character doesn't grow at all. Sure he get's stronger, but basis of his character is still the same. He murdered his parents for wretched reasons and after all these volumes, remains the same degenerate excuse of a human being.

I'm fine with blood and I love mangas like Blade of the Immortal and Threads of Time. This manga is not like those works. There's no real plot. It's just distasteful.

Its a strange story spanning the life of a troubled young man who refuses to lay down and matter what he has to do to survive. I wont lie to you. The lead is anything but a nice guy and to say that you'll love to hate to love him isn't an overstatement. The artwork start out pretty rough and gritty and it doesn't get much cleaner but it does evolve in a way. If you like Vagabond or Threads of Time then you'll most likely enjoy this as well. My thanks to manga Sketchbook for the translation of a series that I doubt will ever be licensed. Its pretty graphic.

I prefer Berserk than this...there's no outlet of comedy in it and plus, I hate the emphasis on insects...Praying Mantis and the like! The attacks are superb but Ryo's role didn't catch my attention! If fighting was to be based on, I prefer Hajime no Ippo's boxing than this...
