From VIZ:
Winning isn't everything in the game of basketball, but who wants to come in second? It takes dedication and discipline to be the best, and the Shohoku High hoops team wants to be just that. They have one last year to make their captain's dream of reaching the finals come true--will they do it? Takehiko Inoue's legendary beloved basketball manga is finally here and the tale of a lifetime is in your hands.
Hanamichi Sakuragi's got no game with girls—none at all! It doesn't help that he's known for throwing down at a moment's notice and always coming out on top. A hopeless bruiser, he's been rejected by 50 girls in a row! All that changes when he meets the girl of his dreams, Haruko, and she's actually not afraid of him! When she introduces him to the game of basketball, his life is changed forever...
Note: Includes a oneshot called 10 Days After.
In 1995 Slam Dunk received the 40th Shogakukan Manga Award for shounen.
This is, without a doubt, my favourite manga of all time, and I don't even like basketball. Sakuragi is a hilarious, inspirational, amazing combination of cluelessness, cockiness and talent, and he couldn't have a better supporting cast. My only complaint is the ending, although it was inspiring in its own way - the series is too short! I wanted more! I was never ready to part with the characters that I loved so much.
It made me laugh, and it came close to making me cry several times. Don't be scared off by the basketball - the sports scenes are thrilling and suspenseful even for those who have absolutely no interest in the sport, like me. This manga is for everybody, and everybody should read it.
I can't believe that "some manga" I took to read only because it was done by creator of Vagabond took over my life for nearly a week. I'm not a basketball fan, I did play a bit in highschool, but nothing special. Yet, the whole story immediately drawn me in, and I enjoyed it thoroughly. So many emotions... True art. 9 because I wish there would be like 20 more volumes, I wish to stay longer with all those people... Thank you Takehiko Inoue!
I'm a bit biased since I'm a basketball fanatic. But, this is a manga with great plot and character development that anyone can enjoy. My only gripe is that mangaka portrays Japanese people as being ridiculously tall, with crazy hops, and doing insane basketball moves. But then again, I can't really blame him for promoting his own people, and it would be pretty boring if it was ultra realistic. It is a true epitome of sports manga.
This manga is amazing. I finished it in 3 days... (pulled two all-nighters)... just because I couldn't put it down. I normally just read comedy and shoujo manga, so it was just boredom that had me picking this up. Never thought I'd be so blown away by it. It is action-packed, touching, inspiring, hilarious, and extremely fun to read.
I couldn't believe how this manga could move me so much!! At first I thought that since it's just a sports manga, I could just skim through it but little did I know that I would get sucked into its story.
I must say Inoue Takehiko is a very good story teller and I give him props just because some parts made me laugh out loud. I can also tell you that the more I read, the more excited I became, its like I was watching their games from a spectators point of view and yet know what the players are thinking.
Also, the more chapters I read, I can tell that the mangaka's drawing is also improving. Plus, I even got to know a little bit knowledge about basketball too!!
this is my all-time favourite manga!! this was the first manga i ever read and the series that got me really hooked on manga and basketball. it's so inspiring, touching and absolutely hilarious at the same time!
