Description
The story takes place in an era similar to that of ancient Rome in a country called Chronos. It follows a group known as the Temple Mercenaries. In particular, the manhwa is about Ares, Michael and Baroona, three young warriors with mysterious pasts and surpassing skills...

The manhwa is notable for its subtle use of anachronistic elements (Ares' shoes are similar to that of classic Adidas), as well as very dynamic and fluid action sequences.

The unique example of good shounen manga drawn after 2000. We have a protagonist who actually KILLS his enemies, has a GIRLFRIEND and doesn't give a damn about your common sense and moral principles. And of course the antagonist whom you can actually hate(Though I like him, he's kind of an asshole you can admire). Also the art during battle scenes is great.
We have a really good manhwa. It's not as good as Shin Angyo Onshi but I still can give it

The story seems so great at first. But it became confusing in the later chapter, i can't seem to recognize characters, especially with that kind of weird lousy arts (most of the characters have that "boring" look in their faces).

Pace is sluggish, art is hardly candy for the eyes, characters are almost as shallow as the plot, and a child could think up a better atmosphere and present it better. I don't understand why it's receiving so many tens, nor why it's been deemed "best manhwa ever"-- especially since anything Youn In-Wan and Yang Kyung-Il poops would be better than this train wreck. There isn't any ambition in this series, which is painfully evident in the lack of anything "new" or thoughtful. The cast of characters is largely unlikeable-- again - shallow and unoriginal. Even if there was some development, some actual character development that was needed from the plot, I'm afraid they would still remain as unlikeable as they are when they first appear. Almost as bad as Hellsing. Almost.

Good but not epic

The story and character development is good but it's not as epic as everyone exagerates. At the beginning, it was fun to read but it gets kind've boring with too many action scenes and predictable plot "twists".

i love this manhwa. i love this manhwa more than life itself. (if i'm a nihilist, that means less than it might.) if i catapulted to the moon with but one story, it would be this one. i will learn my mother tongue just to read this in its original form. i will most certainly do that before i learn greek to likewise give due to "the odyssey".

the art of "ares" is loose and rangy and full of motion, as if the artist snapped out his wrist before drawing an entire volume in one go. the story is spare and well-paced and capable of pathos. each character sparks. every frame speaks - even those without word or action. that is, ryu geum chel is a great storyteller who also happens to draw stylishly well.

lucas and tolkein annoy me with their cultural rewrites, whereas ryu's modern and roman munge adds color because the story is his own.

i love "the breaker", and "ares" reminds me that i only _like_ "the breaker".

that blur between shounen and seinen, it is the best. if you have a grown-up attention span, read "ares". the god of stories will never forgive you if you don't.

Best manhwa ive read so far. There is a little bit of romance, which adds some funny comedy, but what really shines is the character development. Each character has a huge background with lots of detail. Oh, and Ares is really cool and i love how he acts around Ariadne.

I'll make this short and simple for yah! This is an amazing series, so read it! The author actually takes time to develop his characters in this action packed story.

I love this series. The artwork is really great, although different from what you'd normally see in a manga. I think this is what makes me like it so much. It's not any more cliche or unrealistic than Naruto or Rurouni Kenshin which are a couple mangas that it really reminded me of.

I'm doing my best to make sure everyone I know finds out about Ares. It's a shame that it's one of the hidden gems out there, and I'd really like to see more people enjoy it.

Some people have said that they didn't like it so much. *shrug* What can I say? We all have different taste. I just hope you read more than a chapter before coming to a decision. It's been a while since there was an update, so I don't know if this series will continue, but until then I'll be re-reading the volumes that i have. (all the way up to 18)

I've read lots of manga. I read Kenshin and loved it. D-gray man, and Black Cat are really good too. Battle Royale was fascinating in a really sick and twisted sort of way so of course it was also great. I read Naruto all the way up to chapter 150 - 200 or so and stopped because the story seemed to go on, and on, and on.... I can tell that Ares is one of those that will stay interesting no matter how long it continues. Even after 18 chapters not one situation has been the same as another.

Many shounen mangas are all written on the same type of plot setting (not necessarily a bad thing fyi) The hero will get some power - beat up monster - get more power - fight stronger monster... and so on... Ares doesn't really do this which is why it's so fascinating. All he's gaining is experience, both mental and physical, without the pressure to get stronger so he can fight the next big bad guy down the line.

This is a fascinating story. The endless pages of battle sequences could've easily become tiring fast, but this is a character-driven manhwa. Though I would say one particular character makes this a memorable read: Michael. Incredibly strong and with an unquenchable blood lust, Michael is one of the best Temple Mercenaries and considered a best friend by Ares, the main character. Only Baroona, another friend of Ares and Michael, is wary of Michael. And with reason. The writer also does a good job of introducing interesting and multi-faced secondary characters; you want to know the motivations of these secondary characters, what drives them to be warriors and killers.

The art style is also unique. Although the story is evidently set in an Ancient Rome-type setting, the characters are seen to wear modern articles of clothing (such as hoodies and cargo pants). When I was reading this series, I was so invested in the story and characters that I hardly paused to think about why some characters were garbed in modern day attire; I just went with it.

Anyway, I highly recommend this remarkable series (now one of my top 3) completely.
