...It does what it says on the tin. I'm looking for manga that have angels and/or demons (preferably both) - but not just any random, generic angels and demons, but rather specific, identifiable ones from actual religions and mythologies, past or present. I'm really going for angels and demons (I'm a sucker for wings), but I'll take recommendations that aren't specifically angels and demons as long as it's in a similar vein. As long as I can look up the character's name in a book about Religion X and find it there, I'm happy. Bonus points if the portrayal of said angel/demon/whatever toys with the traditional idea of the religious figure the character is based on.

I'll go for pretty much any genre except comedy. I want it to be serious, dammit. -.- It doesn't have to be scanlated if it's manga.

I don't have many examples, sadly. Na mo Naki Tori no Tobu Yoake has secondary characters that pretty much are exactly what I'm looking for, and Olimpos, while not angels and demons, does this with Greek mythology. Something along those lines would make me very happy. ^^ Thanks in advance!

Angel Sanctuary ~ Christian
Matantei Loki ~ Norse

Angel Sanctuary is quite serious with flashes of humour quite dark and tragic. The plot revolves around Setsuna as he is caught up in a battle between angels and demons from Christian lore.

Matantei Loki revolves around norse gods but is quite comic.

Rental Magica: the anime is completed, but the manga isnt. Its about "old school" magic (Clavicula Salomonis etc), not some random summon/pokemon

666 Satan's manga is completely scanlated and it uses Kabbalah's version of the angels and demons.

Innocent Bird (yaoi) - some of the side characters can be looked up, but not the main ones.

I'm not sure this counts, but Petshop of Horrors and its sequel contain several demons from actual mythologies, like the man-eating sheep-tiger named Totetsu and the wish-granting Kirin. Same goes for Shaman King, where most of the Christian archangels show up as guardian spirits for the X-Laws - either that, or the guardians are named after the archangels. I'm not sure about that.

But I am sure that this counts: Saint Young Men, with Jesus and Buddha as protagonists! Lol. I think that other religious/mythological figures also show up in cameos.

Not to mention Buddha, which is just made of pure awesome. No wings here, but definitely an identifiable religious character! Haha.

7 Ghost uses some well-known Christian figures, such as Michael and Raphael. I've only just started reading this manga, so I'm not sure how "canonically" Christian they are, just that they're there.

Hope that helps. 🙂
