school life is a must
the guy is just you average joe, nothing special

Accel World - guy is actually not just plain but short and fat, also i'd suggest the anime since its finished unless you can get a hold of the last 9 volumes

But oh well, who could hate this classic setups in the world of romance..

I don't want to be a party pooper, but I disagree with Ore Monotagari and My Hero as a plain boy x popular girl romance. I think it's more of plain boy x girl romance.
Nevertheless, I would still recommend to read them too, as they are awesome! Sorry, for not contributing, I only know 3D Kanojo since I don't read much shounen, only shoujo. I think that you should really go read "shounen" manga, plenty of popular girl x plain guy romances there, rare for shoujo though. As well, try using tags, like popular female lead.
