It seems like you're being overly critical of optik.
I have to admit some of the comments are less than welcoming but scanslating and the online manga community is not always kind. But Optik blew up (this is even worse if this his first post because now he's left a nice, bad impression with us) instead of more like "I can't find [group's name] and they have no forum or website. Can someone help?" He might've gotten a bit better response, although it's still asking "where can I download manga" in the end.
Also, I recall that some manga scanslation groups will put in their channel topic that they will ban a person about asking when a release of a series is coming out, or push back the release a day or a week (or even push it back in proportion to the number of people that bug them).

Most scanlating groups have the goal of providing good translated manga out to people... it's a great service... but when you start becoming elitist and ignoring those asking for help by telling them that they're stupid for not searching enough...
I don't know if it is them be elitist. Slow and Dirty might not want to bother with a channel and...admittedly what that group is doing isn't considered totally ethical. Maybe they don't want to directly link themselves to trouble.

...man. That just sucks for the person merely asking for more info. Whatever happened to being nice? Giving a link out for people probably isn't going to be the end of the world for you.
Being nice for the first time isn't really much. But when it's the
nth time the person asks for help it's...

If you've been on IRC and helped people that says "oh, where are the downloads? Plz help me" and that they don't even bother working out the stuff themselves it's just....

Hmm... so I guess my point: if you're a scanlating group, try to make the experience for others as painless as possible. Even if you do have to put up with a lot of crap. >_<;;
No offence, but they put up with a lot of crap
before the release even goes to the public... You are asking some people at their wit's end to go to more trouble for some people that are ungrateful...

Then again, since you've said this, maybe you haven't felt the pain of being a scanslator or you spoke without thinking your words through enough.
Scanslating use to be uglier (I don't think I even saw the ugliest part of it). Maybe everything was on IRC then. And scanslating is a hobby in the end, and look at what this topic has shown: it's not just hte scanslating, it's dealing with the people that ask "where can I find the manga you scanslated". I hear fansubbing is much more painful than scanslating too.
