Rape is the new dead parents.
I mean, you know how in older literature when you want to give a character a tragic background, you make her an orphan? Today, it's much more interesting to make her a victim of child rape. I'm not even going to bother listing the huge amount of girls - and in BL, boys - in manga that have been raped in their lifetimes.
But I've never come across rape used as a tragic backstory in a male character outside of BL manga. The closest I can think of is a bit near the beginning of Himizu where some fat kid gets a bj from an online predator, thinking it would help him get his manga published, but that scene was treated as humor more than anything.
So I'd like to see if there are any non-BL, male characters that have experienced a non-comedic rape. Does it exist?

I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for, but Gutts from Berserk got raped as a little kid, and traumatized by it too.

Basara: One of the heroine's allies is captured, tortured, and raped at some point in the story. (Not 100% sure, though.)
D-ASH: A gay high school student is drugged and sodomized by his track-and-field coach. Although the sex appeared passively consensual, I remember thinking that it was rape, or at least that the relationship must have originally begun with a rape.
Historie: Some kind of sexual abuse is implied to have occurred to the male slaves whom the protagonist meets on a ship. The slave owner castrated them and may have raped them as well.
Red River: One of the villains is a former slave, who was raped and castrated as a child.
Shigurui: There is a scene where two samurai visiting a male prostitute house have sex with the young boys so violently that their backs are broken. Although they are prostitutes, they hardly consented to that kind of sex, so this struck me as rape.

One of the villians, Legato was forced into prostitution. I'm sure that qualifies as rape. It's not until much, much later that you find out though.

In the flashback, it's revealed that the main chara's stepfather was gang-raped before he became the king. I forget in which volume, though. In the end of the story, I love him more than the main chara, even though he's the villain :haha:

As a child, Nakago was raped by the emperor.
Gantz
Sakurai Hiroto/Cherry was sexually abused by school bullies. And if I'm remembering right, the sports teacher was involved as well.
Before they ended up in their twisted relationship it started off with the older Gurai raping Yuki when he was a child.
The World Is Mine
At one point one of the protagonists rapes the other. It's a tiny scene and though the other was protesting... I think he was happy as well. In a very screwed up way. You just have to read to get it 😐

I've remembered several others, too.
Operation Liberate Men has guys being coerced ("soft rape") into sex, BY WOMEN, since men are second-class citizens and sex-slaves.
Les Bijoux - has the "villain" (who is also the main love interest of the gender-bending hero/heroine) with a past of having been raped as a child and a teenager.
And in Berserk, I'm pretty sure Griffith was raped when he was a kid? Dunno about Gutts, though...
One of the stories in The Tarot Cafe has an artificially engineered male ("humanoid doll") being raped and otherwise tortured by his female owner, who was given the doll as a gift by the inventor that the doll is actually in love with... Uh. I'm not sure about this, though. Could anyone confirm?
Edit#2: Sidooh! Forgot about that. I seem to vaguely remember a scene where one of the preteen boys is gang-raped by female prisoners? Or at least molested...
Also, My Name is Nero is a mind-boggling, AWESOME manga about the emperor Nero, and his twisted relationship with his mother (whom he loves, but in a damaged sort of way, since she's been sexually abusing him since he was a child, and I do mean full-on rape, not just "the bad touch"). No wonder he goes nuts.
Edit#3: Sorry for all the edits... Lol. Just remembered that Earl and Fairy has a main male protagonist who had been raped as a child/teen (prostituted himself to survive, but even more is implied).

Forgot to mention Goodnight Punpun. It has a brief scene in one of the later chapters where the main character is pressured/raped into having sex with an older woman.

@rabbitpower & Nightswan, re: Griffith... I still think of it as rape as long as the character is a child... Even if the child "wants" it, it's called statutory rape. And I mean, there's no way that didn't mess Griffith up even more... It's obvious he didn't exactly have a gala time, be it for political maneuvering or anything else...
I can't believe I forgot about Gutts! I don't know why Griffith's abuse stuck with me longer. 😕
