When I first started to read them they were the talk of the town, now you can't even give them away. Like the American comic book I think the market got flooded with a lot of garbage, the Xenophobic kind. The more I read the more xenophobic they seem to become. I know that sounds weird but I'm tired of the "This is so Japanese" or "Only Japanese food is truly suitable for Japanese", and "Look he's got light hair so not Japanese" it's like reading a 1950's Superman comic or some post 9/11 comic full of only love America and no one else, oh and the country bashing too. I find it odd that only the Japanese seem to find fault in Canada and EVERYONE loves Canada. I miss the good old days of friendly open Japan with the fun compelling comics, not the screaming sign waiving "Foreigners go home" kind and yes they do that A LOT now at least. I hope that the new mangas will reflect a more global outlook and not a closed one.
edit: By the way I love the culture, country, and their language but no where is sunshine and rainbows all the time. And am planning to go very soon for school .

o_o I have NO idea what you're talking about.
Same here.
I don't see any xenophobia happening.
The Japanese have their own stereotypes/opinions about other countries and other people. Manga is just manga. As for everything else you're saying...........
lolwut?

Japan's been far more nationalistic in the past (even postwar.) I don't really see why you're trying to harken back to some sepia-colored yesteryear that never actually existed.

I've read over a hundred manga and the type I read are all action when it comes down to it in Bio-Meat: Nectar every foreigner seemed evil or stupid, it was kind of sad, and unfortunately I find it a lot in that action oriented kind of manga, shoujo not so much but it does come up. I guess I'm just old and jaded and want more from people then petty drama . Besides I'm not singling them out I make the point that its tiresome and a boring plot element.

It's true that Japanese people are annoyingly xenophobic (plus, they have the gall to say it's because we're the racist and rude ones, despite the fact that they're the country that's 99% non-foreigner).
But I've never seen anything as bad as what's mentioned in this thread.

Well... we should actually be picking on Koreans or Albanians if you want to talk about ethnic homogeneity (Japan's about 97%, which is lower than the other two). I believe the actual argument is that there wasn't a concept of racism in Japanese society until quite recently (well, personally I'm certain the concept was there, but it's true that there wasn't a word for it until much later than most societies).
Japan's definitely flawed on a deep level in this regard, don't get me wrong, it just needs to be presented factually, rather than as a reaction.

I think than more than being "xenophobic" people tend to write about what they know, and what they know best is their own culture, and lest be honest, most people don't know all that much about other cultures besides there own, so they may not be trying to be xenophobic, it's just that maybe the stereotypes come off like that....

I have a friend that is japanese and is living here in the states (she helps me with japanese, and I help her with english) I have noticed that she complains a lot about america, but to be honest she does seem to be drawing the short stick in a lot of things... but I never once thought that she was being hateful, considering she likes to complain a lot anyway about any country including japan (sometimes).
But I never really notice manga being "xenophobic".. and I surely don't know why it would be the end of manga...

xenophobia isn't the end of manga, i dont really see all that much of it...sure there are alot of stereotypes but i just think its funny like how all americans are 2 meters tall with huge muscle and brown skin saying "You the bomb, maan!" and all british are suuuuuuuuper rich such and such

Americans are AAAAALLLLLLLL RIIIIIGGGGGHHHTTT!
If you get that you get a cookie.
And I've read over a thousand of series honey, and I'm still not seeing it. But I only read shoujo so I guess I'm biased. But if you think about it there are plenty of countries that consist only of one nationality. And from what I've heard Koreans are worse then the Japanese. There is no crisis though.
