I'm looking for something where the main character is desperate/low-self esteem. I guess you could also call it a tragedy. I've read flowers of evil and both the main characters were pretty messed up and the ending was good in my opinion. Left you with a lot to think about. I have a some criteria. I've been doing some searching myself but I love most of the stuff members recommend here.

  1. Main character is kind of wimpy but slowly develops into a better person (sundome).

  2. Main character gets really depressed/desperate/crazy at some point. Just really down on life and doesn't know what to do. (Flowers of Evil, manga and manhwa). His thinking is just really rash and impulsive. Like he has a diary or something and just goes crazy writing in it. <- That isn't a reference to any manga, I just want to try to show what kind of mental state he's in.

  3. Some sort of romance or the main character (girl) teases him but in reality likes him. She might have problems herself (or be crazy, doesn't matter).

  4. Good art. Solid looking characters and both male and female look attractive (no homo hah). I can't stand an attractive female lead and the male just looks....Ehhhhh.

  5. Ending can either be open-ended or it can be a solid conclusion, no real preference here.

  6. Decent length, it can be a few chapters but I'd rather read something with a few volumes or something that is completed. I would like to spend a few hours reading the series, instead of reading a few chapters and have to find something else.

  7. Ecchi scenes for sure. Doesn't have to be full blown sex but bra/panties/ecchi situations/some kind of lust scene. I don't want hentai where it's just random sex for no reason.

This is all the criteria for now. It doesn't have to fit everything, this is just a general guideline of what I like. If it only has 1 of them cool, thanks for the recommendation! If it has all 7,even better! I just posted the criteria so you can get a feel for my taste. I like ecchi series' but I've been looking for stuff that has a deeper meaning/makes you think about life a little bit.

I have been looking myself but I'd love to know what you guys would recommend! 😀

Kurohime fits pretty much everything. Two main characters. Although self-esteem is not lacking, they often get into desperate situations.
Chronicles of the Cursed Sword Warning: currently in scanlation limbo. It's completed in Korea, but I do not believe it is being worked on atm. (It was licensed by Tokyopop, but they did not finish it before... dying.) Fits all the criteria, minus ecchi scenes, which are rare, although the female characters are mostly dressed pretty skimpily (big surprise).

Sweet thanks 😀 But I forgot to mention that I don't really want any action or fighting lol. Mostly like school/college/town setting. Sorry about that!!

seconded

Onani Master Kurosawa
Oyasumi Punpun

and many series by oyasumi punpun's author have depressed main chara in a realistic setting.

so school/college/town setting fits well

First off, I would like to second Don't Cry, Girl. Even if this one is short and the characters are not really that messed up, rather a bit weird and unordinary, it's definitely a nice read. Aside from this, the work of SAKURADA Hina may be nearly a perfect match, if you would come to like her quite edgy and unique drawing style. Also, you can try taking a look at Coelacanth and H, which both hve a great storyline, although you wouldn't find smut scenes ... ^^

Suicide Island

no fighting. check
weak mc to dependable. check
character growth. check
art... well depend on taste (i don't really like it, but suit the genre). it's leaning toward realism.
desperate(to the point of suicide) . check

no echi or hentai (fanservice) tho, its more to mature genre, sure there is a few scene, but it's more like part of the plot.

it's a survival kind manga, the mc start being weak, but later on there will be growth.

Six Half

The mc gets depressed and stuff but she's actually good at hiding it and pushing it down inside of herself.
