I would have done that if I was aiming for a brute force search, but I was going for a more pinpoint accuracy recommendation based on reader experience.

Zipang about a ship full of modern Japanese soldiers sent back in time to WWII.
Barefoot Gen I've never read myself, but it looks intresiting.
There's a story in Secret Comics Japan called Mutant Hanako. It's a weird very offensive comedy, so I don't imagine it's what you're looking for.
Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms Not exactly a WWII manga, but its about the aftermath in Hiroshima and it's fantastic.

Hellsing and its prequel have wwii related forces, I think The Dawn actually takes place during wwii...
Barefoot Gen is really a sad (maybe reality-like) slice-of-life that takes place after the bombings.

Soukou Tekidanhei
Ishi no Hana
Sensoron (supposed to be good)
Nichiro Sensou Monogatari (dunno about this one really)

How can it be good if it's written by a right-wing nationalist?!
To quote the critique:
Popular culture has now become a site for contesting historical truth, and this manga functions as a ground for a political battle over memory and history, promoting nationalism.
It even contains a "different interpretation" as in "WE DIDNT KILL THEM" of the Nanjing Massacre. It's nationalistic propaganda. (
[...] on the contrary, Kobayashi’s assertion that the Nanjing Massacre is nothing but “fabrication” is obviously fraudulent.

I have to admit, those definitely look interesting, but what use is it recommending a series that isn't translated or scanlated outside of Japan? Thanks for recommending anyway.
I don't think there's much WWII manga, for obvious reasons, but here's some that I've had experience with;
Barefoot Gen (only read a preview, if you've seen the film Grave of the Fireflies you'll know what to expect)
Who Fighter with Heart of Darkness (interesting anthology, with three WWII short stories; the first a bizzare UFO encounter, the second is the author's take of Joseph Conrad's novella Heart of Darkness, and the third is a meaningless story of the evolution of tanks)
Adolf (I just finished reading the second volume, this is a downright engrossing series already, highly recommended)
Apollo’s Song (time travelling romance/drama manga epic, from the creator of Adolf, in which one of the chapters is set in WWII)
Town of Evening Calm, Country of Cherry Blossoms (heartfelt and beautifully illustrated short work concerning post-bomb Hiroshima, an over-looked masterpiece)
Good-bye (TATSUMI Yoshihiro) (bleak collection of short stories concerning everyday men struggling through post-WWII Japan)

No one said that they need to be scanlated. There are people who can read Japanese, you know.

Yes, I thought you might say that, but usually when someone asks for a recommendation on this forum, people suggest scanlated or licensed manga.
I don't mean to argue with you, I do appreciate those recommendations!
