New Poll - Character Clones

This week's poll was suggested by kitty1826x. The wording is a bit confusing, so let me explain. Let's says mangaka 1 has series 1, which ends. This series has character A. Then he starts making series 2, which contains character B. Characters A and B look or look the same. Maybe they're both protagonists, and they start off basically doing the same thing. How do you feel about this kind of situation? Does it get boring? Repetitive? Maybe a little spoiler-ish since you're pretty sure the main character will get romantically paired up with basically the same person again?

New Poll - In a Fantasy World

This week's poll from drunkguy presupposes that you currently live in the real world, and then you're suddenly transported to a fantasy world (think magic, knights, fantasy creatures, etc). What's your end goal here? I'm purposely not adding an "other" option, but feel free to comment below with your most outlandish goals.

Overpopulation or loss of resources is the worst? Really?... Unfortunately, it's also one of the most likely to actually happen.

Translating Manga Fandom: The Case of Manga Scanlation

All the way back in April 2013, we did a poll titled "Translation Accuracy vs Fluency."
Question: Which aspect of a translation is more important to you?
Choices:
Accuracy: I like manga translation to retain characteristics of the language of the original, to show the linguistic and cultural differences between Japanese culture and my own. - votes: 9633 (73.6%)
Fluency: I like manga translation to read as if the author was native English speakers, so that linguistic and cultural differences are minimized. - votes: 3458 (26.4%)
There were 13091 total votes.

This was requested by a member named mattfabb in order to write a thesis. Well, he's done with the paper and graduated with a PhD in Translation Studies at Cardiff University, UK. He's still doing research in scanlation, so feel free to drop a comment below or email him at mattfabb[at]hotmail.com

A presentation he did can be found here: http://www.academia.edu/12980033/Translating_Manga_Fandom

A section of the thesis that was specifically written for the presentation can be found here: http://www.dropbox.com/s/9itl9vi7e58xe3m/Matteo%20Fabbretti%20Kobe%20Article.pdf?dl=0

New Doujinshi Rules In Effect

The policy changes we previously announced for doujinshi will now take effect in the form previously stated. We are narrowing the scope instead of allowing anything. New policy is as follows:

We will only be accepting doujinshi that are published and/or sold in stores (whether offline or online). A basic guideline would be that a release/series will only be approved if it can be found on http://www.doujinshi.org/. This means we'd be rejecting basically everything from artists on http://www.pixiv.net/.

Please note that the MU definition of doujinshi is a derived work of an actual series. Original works are considered oneshots. There is no such thing as an "original doujinshi" on MU. This distinction has existed here for many years, so this last point is not a change in policy. As a natural extension to the previous paragraph, oneshots are also only allowed if they are published and/or sold in stores (whether offline or online).

PS: This means we will eventually remove many doujinshi releases/series that don't fit our standards anymore, otherwise users may continue to see them as acceptable (when they're not).

PSS: A continuing policy is to only accept series entries for doujinshi and oneshots that are scanlated

PSSS: The previously mentioned policy changes about novels are still under discussion, so nothing is changing for now.

New Poll - Apocalypse

This week's poll by Lost Rabbit deals with the "worst" apocalyptic earth to live in. You can interpret what "worst" means for yourself. I listed a pretty good variety of what you'd normally see in stories, so have at it.

You can submit poll ideas here (and try to keep them manga/anime-related)
http://www.mangaupdates.com/showtopic.php?tid=3903

Previous Poll Results:
Question: Which of the following demographics do you dislike the most or read the least of?
Choices:
Shoujo - votes: 3042 (33.2%)
Shounen - votes: 1440 (15.7%)
Seinen - votes: 1645 (18%)
Josei - votes: 3037 (33.1%)
There were 9164 total votes.
The poll ended: June 20th 2015

Dang, shoujo and josei were so close together. I'm really surprised by these results, as I believe according to our last gender-specific poll, our site has more female visitors, yet isn't shoujo targeted toward a female audience? Or maybe because most of the males voted against shoujo/josei while the female vote was split.

Upcoming Policy Changes (Doujinshi and Novels)

Several of us admins are currently in a discussion on the focus and direction of MangaUpdates. The more immediate changes would deal with how we treat doujinshi and novels. These policy changes are currently not in effect, but that could change at any moment, pending comments from you guys. Feedback is welcome.

Doujinshi:
Currently there is no limit on what is considered a doujinshi. We feel we need to narrow the scope instead of allowing anything. We will only be accepting doujinshi that are published and/or sold in stores (whether offline or online). A basic guideline would be that a release/series will only be approved if it can be found on http://www.doujinshi.org/. This means we'd be rejecting many of the shorter works, especially those from artists on http://www.pixiv.net/.

Please note that the MU definition of doujinshi is a derived work of an actual series. Original works are considered oneshots. There is no such thing as an "original doujinshi" on MU. This distinction has existed here for many years, so this last point is not a change in policy.

Novels:
We feel we need to bring the focus back to our primary purpose: manga/manhua/manhwa. Lately there's been a huge increase in web novels (I just did a CTRL+F with "Novel" on the main release page, and there's 114 instances). We will only be accepting novels that are directly related to existing manga, manhwa, or manhua (according to MU). This means most web novels will be rejected.

PS: We are still in discussions about what to do about artbooks and webtoons.

New Poll - Demographic Hate 2

This week's poll is from residentgrigo. It's similar to a poll we did way back in March 2013, but with some pretty major differences. The previous poll had stuff like yaoi and hentai, which are pretty polarizing, so we took out all those options and left just the main 4.

Edit: Really guys? Fine, I've edited the question slightly to fit your more sensitive needs.

Previous Poll Resuts:
Question: Have you ever camped out overnight or lined up for a long time to buy something right when it came out or for a large sale?
Choices:
Yes, I camped out and I'd do it again - votes: 349 (3.9%)
Yes, I camped out, and never again... - votes: 156 (1.8%)
I lined up for a while, but not overnight - votes: 1254 (14.1%)
Not yet, but I'd consider doing it - votes: 1448 (16.3%)
Never, and let's keep it that way - votes: 5672 (63.9%)
There were 8879 total votes.
The poll ended: June 13th 2015

I'm surprised a lot of people would consider camping out overnight. I wonder what would convince you to actually do it?

New Poll - Camping Out

This week's poll was suggested by kitty1826x. It's not exactly manga-related, but I like it anyways. If you got a story about camping out (like for Black Friday), comment below!

Question: You're reading a series and suddenly you hit a gap of chapters where no one scanlated them, but someone scanlated the later chapters. You...
Choices:
Stop reading and wait for missing chapters to get released - votes: 4653 (52.8%)
Skip the missing chapters and just continue reading - votes: 953 (10.8%)
Find the raws and try and try to figure out what's going on - votes: 1700 (19.3%)
Look around for or text translations - votes: 987 (11.2%)
Ask someone for a summary of the missing section - votes: 236 (2.7%)
I can read the series' native language, so there's no gap for me - votes: 291 (3.3%)
There were 8820 total votes.
The poll ended: June 5th 2015

So scanlators, don't skip chapters. That's evil, and don't be evil.

New Poll - Release Gap

This week's poll from Toushin is a bit wordy and could potentially be confusing. We're talking about the case where you're reading a series, and suddenly you discover that chapters 45-50 were never scanlated, but someone else scanlated starting from chapter 51 and on. As a reader, what do you do about the missing releases? I'd personally just stop reading and wait. But it sucks...sigh...

Being the first one to see the next chapter - votes: 2342 (24.5%)

I should've modified the "first to see the chapter" option to include the idea of spoiling the chapter for everyone

New Poll - Mangaka Assistant

For this week's poll from StaticHD, you should be able to realize that this isn't a serious poll due to some of the weirder options. Although I guess I could've done something like "Being able to stare into the eyes of the mangaka"...

Previous Poll Results:
Question: If you could magically change your primary language to Japanese right now, would you do it?
Choices:
For sure! - votes: 2542 (22%)
Maybe... - votes: 2771 (24%)
Sounds cool, but no thanks - votes: 5304 (46%)
No way, not even if you paid me - votes: 860 (7.5%)
My primary language is already Japanese, but I'd prefer changing to something else - votes: 37 (0.3%)
My primary language is already Japanese, and I wouldn't switch - votes: 20 (0.2%)
There were 11534 total votes.
The poll ended: May 23rd 2015

Looks like half of us would consider it at the very least, while the other half wouldn't wanna do it at all. I wonder what the poll would look like if it was English instead of Japanese?
