Underrated.

I find this to be extremely sweet, and rather brilliant.

The author introduces a world where gender is a naturally (in world) changeable thing, where your gender can switch based on a balance need. This happens now (as in OUR world now) in creatures like fish, so it isn't totally out there.

In such a world a change would be understood by all, and if it isn't a "usual" thing that happens to everyone, it isn't an "unusual" or unknown thing, either. No way, in other words, to play off a person's gender change as anything other than what it is.

So, when Mamiya becomes a girl, there's shock at her changing when she is so old (it is more common to change as a child). (It's also mentioned that the older you are, the harder the change can be, thus leading to a higher mortality rate, and if you know anyone who is trans, or just know statistics of that group, suicide among people whose gender perception goes against the social norm is very high, so this is a nice little toss in for real-world relation.) They also accept her as *her* quite quickly. As he makes an attempt to do the same. It's not *easy* (can you IMAGINE having your first period as an older high school student when you had no idea it would come, but as a guy had some vague understanding ... and probably thought of it as gross ... but no real knowledge...), but as a character who has had unexpected changes in his life (his mother leaving when he was a child, for example), he has a mental foundation to begin accepting his new self. As well as an ... if not entirely supportive (he's afraid of women!) friend, at least one who cares for her regardless of her gender. Though the care changes a bit after boobs...because hormones, obviously.

I've thought about it a lot...if my best friend when I was that age became a guy, I would have fallen in love with him, no question. (I was more than half in love with her in the first place, lol) So. Maybe that's why I found this manga so much fun. It's got a lotta cliche's, but that twist of freshness, friendship, and self-discovery make it worth the read.

Also, it's only 5 chapters. It's not all that great an investment in time! Read it!!!

Despite the gender bender tag, it's not really gay. The first chapter reveals that the guy physiologically and physically becomes a girl via some science-magic phenomenon. From there on, he's a full fledge girl except that he "used to be" a guy. The romance in this story is the concern. It touches on the subject of how deep can a person love. Can you love that person if he used to be a guy but is now a full fledge girl? Can you also ignore the social stigma behind this? The manga handles these issues quite well without dragging on melodrama because both characters think sensibly. It's a short and enjoyable read.

I admit, the idea of a guy turning into a girl very suddenly is a little far fetched. In this manga, they assume it is not a surgical decision, but a complete metaphysical transformation. It "just happens" to some people without any warning.
That being said, can you imagine? Think of the "guy's guys" you know and what would happen if they actually became female. Some things would be awesome, some things would be horrible, and some things would be just plain weird. Now go with only the comical moments - that is this manga! Add a little "is this really okay?" romance moments, and you have this little gem. I can't wait until the last two chapters are in. HAHA!!

UPDATED:
Finished reading it. Sweet. Cute. A little weird, but not in a bad way. smile

Haha I really liked this! It was really funny at the beginning but dang it sure makes a dramatic shift towards the end of the first volume lol. I think the concept of emergence could've been explained better as well since when things happen later on in the manga it's kind of wtf. But overall I really like the author's explorations of gender identity and sexuality, and Mamiya still feels like "Mamiya" even after he turns into a female. And after the momentary "wtf" of the shift from comedy to drama it really becomes a rather touching story, and the continuation is great as well. I love how she focuses on showing them deal with their relationship and hints at societal discrimination as well. I found the comedic beginning enjoyable, but after the drama and seeing the story take a more serious turn it really felt like the series and characters were maturing which is not common and a pleasure to read.

Another note: I find both characters very fleshed out and enjoyable to read about, whether they were male or female! And the relationship and development of equality within it is refreshing as well.

Edit: After finishing it all, I like it even more!! Continuations can be hit or miss, and the author really successfully carried this continuation out.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
It's so sweet to follow their progress through life as they grow older (and as I grew older myself lol), the hardships they face and the good and bad times. The gender identity and discrimination still plays a great role and it's great to see how the two of them adapt to living together and balance responsibilities and stuff. There was this one moment that the author put in which was really impactful and gave me a lot of feels, which happens about ten years or so after Mamiya became a female forever, which is when Miyoshi remembers male Mamiya and realizes he will never see him again and it is a very emotional moment, but then he realizes the female Mamiya in front of him is the same person and is so happy to have her in his life ;__; that was a very beautiful moment and the author portrayed it really well and even tho I finished this a while back that scene still really stands out in my memory and it is one of the things I remember most from this manga ;___; so many feels!!!

Sweet and Touching!

Short, sweet and simple. The pacing is good for a shoujo manga, but then again there was only one volume until a few days ago. I personally like gender benders, so this manga immediately struck a chord with me.

As for the art, it differs a little from your typical shoujo manga. For example, Mamiya's eyes aren't as big and round as you would expect from a shoujo manga, but damn is she beautiful! Miyoshi is definitely good looking enough for a guy.

The setting is a little weird. The idea of males transforming into females is a bit far-fetched, but I can see some correlation to the real world. Interestingly, the high mortality rate among "emerged people" might have something to do with the high suicide rate among transgendered people as well, but that's something for another day.

The characters are likeable as well. Not a lot of pages for character development, but you get the hang of how both Miyoshi and Mamiya feel about the "emergence" clearly. Their interactions with each other is funny and cute. Miyoshi and Mamiya clearly cares for each other, and the dialogue is straight to the point with that!

All in all, a good short read (so far, the series is said to be updated every bi-monthly from now on!) so if you have an hour or two to spare, do give this series a try please! I mean, there's only 6 chapters so far, so what can you lose, right? Only reason I gave it a point short of a perfect score is because of the short length, but that could change pretty soon!

Review from a fan of BL.

Okay first of all, just want to say I'm one of those people who, after getting into BL, has never looked back. Meaning that it's reeeeally hard for me to get into guy x girl romance stories again, I just can't help it xP

Anyways, I gave this a try, knowing that it wasn't going to be BL because of the genre and categories but had just a sliver of hope that maybe it would seem BL-y anyways. And in a way, it sort of does..?

Spoiler-free-ish: The story's pretty cute, it's short and I think that works. I like the art style, it's simple and cute. I think the main characters are pretty likeable, maybe a little too average/cliche. I like that the appearance of Mamiya didn't get overemphasized as a girl, she just seemed to have suddenly grown her hair out xD (or it was a wig) and the personality still seemed somewhat natural as having lived a boy all her life. For Miyoshi, he's more the average of the two, but I still like that he's nice and all.

Spoiler now:
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Okay, so I'm happy and all that Mamiya didn't suddenly become a 'girl', but I found it weird that she was okay with wanting to change her gender to a girl so casually just because his sex changed too. Or at least it seemed that way. Even now I have to think a bit whether to refer to Mamiya as a girl or boy when I type this, because at first it seemed that the only thing that seemed 'girly' that Mamiya changed in his lifestyle after was wearing girl's clothing. That's it. So did he change his gender too? Or since it isn't mentioned, does that mean he doesn't identify? Or are we supposed to assume that his sex and gender change altogether? I know this is a kinda complex subject about gender identity and sex, I myself am not that well-informed either, but it does bother me.

So when Miyoshi claims that he would still love Mamiya even if her sex changed back, it did seem somewhat believable and he even scolds himself for loving Mamiya only after she changed.
Then that's where the ending kinda ruined it a bit for me. AH OKAY so I admit my bias towards BL is showing. But in my opinion, I feel that the story would've wrapped so nicely if Mamiya did turn back into a male. She went through that cocoon thing just to rework herself into a female again, so that meant she did return to a male, but decided she'd leave him for 5 years in doing so.. That part was so sudden and caught me off guard that it felt really rushed and irked me. If they had fleshed that skip out some more, and didn't just have it get tacked on at the end, I think it could have worked, despite my bias. But yeah, Mamiya even said she'd have emerged from the cocoon earlier had Miyoshi said it was okay either way, and it's like, THAT COULD HAVE SAVED YOU GUYS FIVE YEARS. Or however long she was in there for. I think I would've been more okay with that if maybe Mamiya's thoughts were revealed? Like, if she was worried that society would accept them 'more' if she was a girl and that's why she felt she needed the cocoon.. But the whole, it being two guys originally issue wasn't stressed much at all (which I thought was nice) so I don't think Mamiya would have cared so much, and now I'm thinking was it really necessary then for that whole cocoon ending other than needing to keep her as a girl and to have a little drama last minute?

Sorry I typed too much, but I really did sort of like this. I just think it would've had a powerful message (and, admittedly, satisfied my BL bias) had Mamiya's body reverted back to a male's and Miyoshi did continue to love him despite only having feelings for Mamiya after his body was a girl's. I think it could have been touching if Mamiya was more conflicted about keeping her body female because Miyoshi only started loving her because of that, and then Miyoshi stopping her from cocooning to reassure her that his love greater than that. ALSO, maybe it could've worked too if the side effect about reverting sex back wasn't there at all. I don't know.

Anyways, these are just what I feel, sorry about my BL bias (I tried hard to be more open minded okay! I will just let all this be my headcanon xP), but I still think things could have worked with Mamiya being either sex had the ending been reworked. I like to think that gender/sex shouldn't matter in this love story so much, except for the fact that that's a major plot device so it has to be an issue xP

So yeah, people looking for a lot of BL-ness, there is not much, but you can still see it. I think the relationship is cute all throughout and there are several cute and funny moments. The story is fair and I think is worth a try, I'm just curious now what other people think xP

I thought this manga would be somewhat more deep than the average shoujo manga, but sadly its not

Everyone but the two mc are 1 dimensional. The part i hated was when the cousin is introduced, he is protrayed as a hater who hates the woman because she used to be a man, and that she acts like a slut because she appeared toppless in front of him. I hate this because the author could have used this character as someone eho dislikes the idea and is able to coherently explain why he dislikes it( similar to the manga blue flag) however that manga dles not take those steps

Another thing is the relayionship between femc and mc i understand there are some time skips, but the removes alot of the adventure of likeing these characters. I did not like how the mc was protrayed into the typical shoujo male mc, with kabedon and like tsundere ish behaviours. And i really did not like how the male turned female character said she could not like mc, but then literally a couple pages after, goes against those morals. Like comeone.

Regardless if you like typical shoujo manga, with the tropes that are in pretty much any shoujo manga, read this, otherwise steer clear from this

Yep it's weird and I thought the ending was borderline freaky rather than sentimental. But it's not really a good or a bad weird, more like the "off" kind of weird. It was a soso story but the lack of explanation, unrealistic reactions of peers/protagonists and the fast sequencing of events fell short of the target. To me, it wasn't thorough enough to make complete sense.

I give it credit for at least changing up the gender-bender boy to girl backdrop.

The way it is presented and explained towards the end is that it is not that person randomly emerges, but rather they emerge so that they can have children with a person who is dear to them.

It was a great idea, but there were some issues with the characters.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
For instance, Mamiya stated that he needed to adapt to his new body (indicating that he still identifies as a male) + Miyoshi was okay with Mamiya reverting back to his original body so I don't understand the need for the first half of the story. If they realized that they were in love with each other regardless of gender then it was pointless for Mamiya to spend years in the hospital and risk his health by remaining a woman. Especially since Mamiya didn't quite enjoy all the changes anyways. It just seemed pretty heteronormative for the story to head in that direction.
Also, some of the statements in this manga were really sexist. I'm sure the author didn't mean any harm since a majority of Japanese people (any maybe the entire world) are brought up to believe in a binary system with specific gender roles. It was just too obvious to ignore, and it pops up throughout the entire manga. There was a point where Mamiya states "when I was male, no matter how much I loved you I couldn't achieve this feeling" which he believed was due to him becoming more feminine? It just makes no sense to me that you could love the same person more by: 1. changing your gender and 2. being feminine.

Despite a few irritating points, I thought it was a great concept. The idea that humans can change sex depending on the needs of the species is interesting. Although, it could have been better if the process was optional and not random. Otherwise there has to be some sort of outside force that magically keeps the female to male ratio equal.
