I liked it well enough at the beginning. It got a little melodramatic as it went on, but still I didn't mind it too much. It was written on the 90s, I expected melodrama, it's cool.
Until we got to Arima's backstory arc.
At that point the entire manga pissed me off. Arima became an asshole that refused any and all communication (you're effing 16, wtf made you think you could solve everything yourself?? dumbass), Miyazawa was basically a side character, even Asaba annoyed me. No she barely felt like a character anymore tbh. Where was all her silliness from the 1st volumes?? Her personality??
Really I was rooting for them to break up during that whole arc. Yeah his backstory was boo hoo so sad, but his handling of it was the most irritating thing I've read.
There's so many ways the issues could've been resolved, but no it had to get dragged out to the point where I truly did not care anymore.

I thought wrong. The beginning was really like your normal typical shoujo manga where a girl is trying to grab the first place from this really smart guy but as the story goes on, it's really more than that. There is a story behind every past. I enjoyed reading the story and it's kinda inspiring in a way. I liked the ending too as the author didn't leave things unanswered and it's truly satisfying. Would definitely recommend this!

Really good ending.

Except for one bad note.
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
I wouldn't have minded Asaba and Sakura falling in love if he didn't have that weird ass premonition when Yukino was pregnant. That made it seem like he was creeping on a kid this whole time. Gross.
But that's just a small mistake and doesn't take away much from the rest of the manga.

The plot is so developed for a shoujo romance, I love it. I love everything about it, even the side characters. What's not to love? Every side character has a background and a goal to accomplish, it's an absolutely wonder story about youth and love.

I feel good :)

Well... I must say that at the beginning, I don't really have interest in this manga, and even though I read all the praises for this manga, I just don't interested, but later I give a try.
I can't finish it when the first time I try. I don't really remember why, but I just feel tired and bored.
Than I try again, and I can finish this manga. But I feel disappointed, maybe because I have read the review about this manga and I was expecting more
Then I try to reading this again, this time I know why you all praising this manga

It was quite engaging. The characters are mostly likable and developed and the romance was nice. Pretty funny too. I got a little uncomfortable when things got serious like in the Tsubasa arc and then Arima's backstory, but in the end, it was a pretty satisfying read.

I read it the first time when I was 11, and it resonated within me so deeply. Every time I reread it, it never lost its effect on me. Even more than Furuba or Mars, even after 9 years later. Nothing comes close

After more than 10 years, this is still one of the best romance manga I've ever read - the only other one is "Honey & Clover". There is something very authentic, very humane from each character's struggles - not too hasty development, not too drastic "Deus ex Machina" solution. As cliché as it is, hearts are fragile things easily disturbed by anxiety, anger, regret. And neither condemnation nor avoidance can offer true peace, but time and sincere acceptance from others and themselves - to let go the past and move towards future. And I've also learn that's it true and very hard thing to do. I sympathize with the belief that trying to be perfect is the only path in life, the denial and anguish of his own imperfection, the desire and frustration of hiding true self and deceiving others; and rejoice with them being able to save each other's heart. This story is something to remember and borrow the courage.

I've watched the anime a lot back then when I was in grade school, it was so funny and cute so I decided to read the manga. I didn't like it at first since the anime one was lighter than the manga. Then rereading it again was a fulfillment.
Like now I've read it again and I still love it!
All the drama, all the characters! It's like Fruits Basket in a way how the ending had the best closure. It was solid.

Most romance manga that last more than a few volumes are filled with pointless over the top drama, and misunderstanding after misunderstanding. They also become very repetitious and frustrating after a while. Kare Kano is different on so many levels. Neither of the main protagonist are your typical cookie cutter characters. They actually say whats on their minds for the most part and they just don't assume what the other is thinking. It reads quickly and doesn't at all feel like 21 volumes at all. This is one of my absolute favorite romance manga of all time. The ending is not rushed and leave you with plenty of closure unlike so many others. If you decide to give this a try, read at least 3 volumes before forming any opinions.
