this manga has all the ingredients to be a really good dramatic shoujo
it's perfect for people who are entering manga's world
the story is quite real.....a little too exaggerated to be slice of life

i have read it twice.. and i would read it again

I've always thought the covers for old manga's are poorly drawn or something. But ultimately, it's often the manga's I love best. You know 'Chiper'? I really enjoyed the time it took place in. The 70s? I don't know, but since...I've yearned to go back in time! Can't you see how free they lived? It all seemed so colourful! Have you noticed how grey our time is? It's all about the enviroment, money, sex and war. Well I guess there's more...I can't really say I know since I'm only fourteen but I think it seemed so free back in the days. Like they didn't care how others looked at them. Well now...as I said I'm not so experienced but, I think it looked happier back then. smile

I loved this manga. It's one of those you start reading and can't stop no matter what time it is. Sadly, after too long at the computer I get sloppy in my eyes and don't register what I read completely so It's a waste to finish it without knowing really what happened later. Well anyways, I can only say I loved this manga. ;D

From the comments it would seem you either love it or you hate it. I happen to be on the love it side. The plot in a nutshell? Two emotionally damaged people learning what it means to trust and love someone. Someone said that in the real world Rei wouldn't look at Kira, but there's actually a very good reason that she first drew his attention. Granted there's a lot of drama, seems these two can not catch a break, but it's done in such a way that it doesn't seem all that far fetched. Some of you might scoff at that remark but really when you think on it it does make sense. There's a cycle of emotional damage and turmoil throughout this series, of how one persons instability can effect others and what it takes to end that cycle and start to heal.

The art is lovely, the story is touching and laid out to you in a way that keeps you guessing (in a good way, it's like a puzzle and you need to keep reading to piece it all together). My only issue, and it's a very small issue, is that I felt it was a little too long, for me the last few volumes lacked that same spark or something. It's hard to really describe what seemed to be missing for me.

Quote
You'll find it sets the benchmark for anything else you'll ever read

I think I would have to agree with this 100%. Mars was perhaps the second full series I read when I got into manga and since then I continue to look for something that will captivate me the same way it has. I

The long and short of it? It's dramatic, it focuses on some rather touchy and some might even say triggering subjects but it really is worth the read. (and reread as the case may be)

OH MY GOD!

this manga is just a masterpiece! It's just too great.

It has: a bad boy guy and not the one who'll rape her every time they're alone I'm talkin' 'bout a REAL BAD BOY the one you'd love to transform. And the girl...OMG! the girl's just great, and the characters are so great.

The plot. believe me it's not one of those that are like 'LMAO, awww, ewwww, omg how could he do...!? wtf!?' this story will make you 'cry, laugh, awww, ewww, etc'.

it's so great Q_Q! would love to read more of this ;_;!

I'll rerereREAD this story HAHAHA xD!

Well,I love this manga. My number one manga ;] Its not a manga with the big cute round glittering eyes,or the kawaii fan girls or anything.Sure, its the good-girl-hearts-with-bad-boy,but.! It has more depth to it.It can make you cry, laugh and smile. This manga really makes you think about life. Its not those little light-hearted ones where they make you sad a little bit and next thing you know, the series is done.its not like those other shoujos where you read it one day,and then the next day you forget. Its DIFFERENT.Its unique cuz it leaves an impact.Very true to life. The characters have flaws but are still great throughout the series. And my gawd, the art is GORGEOUS. So to me,this is series gets an A++ Definately my most favorite manga ;]

I really enjoyed the story form the beginning till the end, there was a point when i was disappointed at the flow of the story but soon I forgot about it and sank into the story again the ending was great too not to mention that in the end was a really umm stressing part so for a minute I thought that the ending is not going to be what expected though some times its good I dont think the manga would have left me with the same warm feeling I have now if the ending was different.
I think that every body that love shoujo stories should read this one and enjoy it as I did.

thanks for the attention,

Alisa

I see where sakura1083 is coming from. I also prefer the light hearted stuff. There are manga that over do things. Mars might als be one. The thing with Mars however. There is some proper chemistry between the characters. The interaction between the character is natrual. It's realistic in a sense how the characters act. The events might be to much, but everything around it is awesome.

The classic shoujo manga, still good, still impactful. Good characters, great arcs, some crazy amazing art. A distinct 90s feel. Loved to reread.

Nice, but clichéd and unrealistic.

MARS is a good read, especially for shoujo lovers, but don't expect too much. The art is good. The plot, though imo very interesting, is banal and predictable. Same goes for the protagonists: they're well characterized and nice, but lack of originality. Rei is the traditional cool, good-looking, bad guy with good heart, while Kira is the classical innocent, quiet and pure girl. After reading a lot of shoujo manga, I can't stand these kinds of characters anymore. It's not like I dislike them, I would just like something different. Some of the themes are also very clichéd: suicide, twins, rape. However, this manga is overall very likeable, recommended for angst lovers and romantics.

Any one who rated this less than 9 was clearly unprepared for the story... So it's my suggestion... If you're looking for a fluffy romantic read, please forget this one.
But if you are ready to invest some time and emotion with the story and its characters... You have to try this. Don't let the old art scare you... There will be no starbursts in the heroine's eyes in this one. If anything, you would be pulled in by the artist's beautiful eye to details, her perfect sense of proportion... and irresistible narration.

Everyone has hidden sides... denying that is a lie. Discover how Rei and Kira stop hurting behind their public facades; watch as the playboy and the quiet artist heal each other.
