Ageha Yoshina is a self-confident high school student who helps others for a fee. On his way back from a job, he finds a strange calling card with the word "Psyren" imprinted left behind in a phone booth and decides to keep it, unaware of its purpose. The very next day, Ageha discovers that his classmate Sakurako Amamiya has the exact same calling card in her possession. When he questions her, Sakurako asks him to save her, signaling the day his troubles begin.

Confused by the circumstances of this encounter, Ageha realizes something is wrong when Sakurako goes missing. In an attempt to figure out what is happening, he decides to call the number provided on the calling card and is asked a series of questions by a mysterious voice, ending with a final, cryptic question: "Would you like to go to Psyren?" Thus begins two teenagers' participation in a game of life or death within a strange world inhabited by monsters called "Taboo." Granted the ability to use psychic powers known as "PSI," the duo fight to return to the place they call home.

I have to say that Psyren is probably one of the best mangas I've ever read. A few chapters in, I was rather hesitant about the plot because it seemed really overused (Gantz anyone?) but as the manga developed I fell in love with it! Not only is the artwork great but the mangaka also really knows how to tell a story. In 50+ chapters, we are already making headway and hinting towards a resolution. This is something I really liked about the manga (considering most mangas like this just consists of nonstop fighting and minimum profluence even through 100+ chapters). The great mystery/love/drama/friendship doesn't hurt either.

Anyways this manga is a must read. If you are feeling a little bit bored in the first 20 chapters, dont worry, it definitely gets better! =)

I enjoyed this series from start to finish. Many people complain that this is a typical shounen manga, but what's wrong with that? Especially if it's shounen done very well. My only complaint is the rushed ending, but that's to be expected as the series was axed by WSJ :S

A good shounen manga that actually ends

Most of shounen mangas just never end. And those that do, tend to end 10 volumes too late because it dragged on too long. Psyren isn't too long, actually it almost seems too short. It has all the components of a good shounen, with action, evolution, time jumps, romance, etc. While there may be many things that could have been "better executed" in this manga, ultimately it provides the audience with a good, satisfying shounen manga reading. And if that's your cup of tea, then give it a shot.

This manga will seriously capture your attention and hold it! I literally read all of it in one night. Psyren is awesome- the length is great, it's not too long or short, and I thought that the ending was very satisfying. If you read this, you won't regret it!

This is a really well done shounen action. The characters, the plot, the art--- everything was well balanced and near perfect.

After rereading this I decided it needs a sequel, since I want to see the characters to do more, not that it didn't end properly.

Seems like all loose ends were tied up, no gaping plothole, all questions are answered well before the final chapters. The final battle does feel a bit rushed, but ultimately, it ended properly.

Psyren is a very good manga, it seeemed like a light action shounen manga at first but it quickly turned into a battle oriented Naruto/Bleach manga. I like this series a lot, it is one of the few series in which Iike the entire cast of characters. I think the whole traveling to the future and back is a fantqastic idea, and the psychic powers although not original is a compelling concept. My main problem with this manga is that the main enemy organization is too small, 5 members? That's ridiculous, it's as if the author is making a point to make this a relatively short manga(which is something I suspect he might be regretting now); I think it was clever how the author killed almost the entire cast on the first mission to create the atmosphere that any character could die at anytime(Gantz did something similar); this series has some very likable characters, good fights and a well done plot, I fear however that the series may be too short for the author to develop characters in depth. I reccomend this manga to any shounen fan. I expect I will love this series more as it progresses.

I give it 8.9 out of 10

i love this series. even though there are only 19 chapters, there is already a hint of a hidden power in Ageha. I love these kind of shounen. can wait for the plot to deepen even more
