The anime and light novels of Crest / Banner of the Stars are both great examples of the "space opera" genre. With memorable characters and action(s) being displayed on both the tactical and strategical level (small squad actions with Lafiel and Jinto, and larger battles by the empire) they easily keep a reader/watcher engaged.
Unfortunately, this isn't the case with the manga. With most elements that add color and flavor to the novel and anime removed, the manga adaption turns the memorable highlights of the novel and anime into bland plot points that seem more like they were done by a checklist than an overall flowing storyline.
For people new to the series, the manga will make them wonder what all the fuss is about. And for fans - just expect to be disappointed.

Plot intro in a nutshell: There are 4 main space-faring empires and 3 of them united together to stop the encroachment of the fourth empire (Abh), known for their space navigation and ships. Or it can be viewed as the other 3 empires are jealous of the prosperous Abh and formed this coalition to try to stop the Abh.
What i like about Seikai trilogy is the strong prideful female lead and the commoner-but-elevated-to-noble-status. The noble of course has no idea what it's like being a noble so in the beginning he fuddles with his position. The story centers on those 2 characters aforementioned it it's very likely that something develops between the two. When i say the main female lead is prideful I don't mean that she is like a condescending rich kid. When i say prideful think of the samurai. Strong convictions and refusal to surrender.
The story from what i assume has a rich background. It is very well thought out and each empire seems to have their own cultures. The Abh are prideful--arrogant at times--and specialize in space faring. The United Mankind are full of ideals such as freedom and equality and ect. . .Even the inhabitants of different worlds have their own greetings. Unfortunatly, it's sometimes hard to piece things together as the manga spams you with alien vocab and the explanations of certain things sometimes comes a few pages later so it leaves the reader wondering. Most of my confusion resulted from not knowing that there was a glossary. There is a glossary on the back of the volumes , if you don't use it you'll be as confused as i was.
Also the story so far feels a bit shallow. That may be because i'm on chapter 5 or 6 or it might be as AMetroid says, that they tried to cram a whole novel into one volume. Whatever the case this looks promising. If not the manga then the novels.
So i give it an 8 until I've read the whole manga

A great light novel brought to anime and now manga. They tried to take a whole novel and cram it into one volume, so the story and character don't get the development they deserve. However, if you like it go grab the books, they're a much better read.
