From Yen Press:

Life couldn’t be better for Keiichi Maebara. Sure, he’s moved to a sleepy, little town where nothing happens and high school consists of a one-room schoolhouse — but his new friends and fellow students are all cute girls! When he happens upon a story about a grisly local murder, however, his contentment turns to uneasiness as he finds himself drawn into a web of silent intrigue that involves his newfound friends…and threatens his very existence.

The story of Higurashi no Naku Koro ni is divided into a total of eight chapters: four "Question" arcs and four "Answer" arcs. Each chapter keeps the same main characters, but ends in a different way. However, each chapter gives valuable answers, hints, and clues to the previous one, while at the same time bringing forth even more mysteries.

The question arcs are:
1. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Onikakushi Hen
2. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Watanagashi Hen
3. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Tatarigoroshi Hen
4. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Himatsubushi Hen

The answer arcs are:
5. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Meakashi Hen
6. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Tsumihoroboshi Hen
7. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Minagoroshi Hen
8. Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Matsuribayashi Hen

The side story arcs are:
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Onisarashi Hen
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Yoigoshi Hen
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Kataribanashi Hen
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Kai - Utsutsukowashi Hen
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Kokoro Iyashi Hen
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni - Hirukowashi Hen
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Jan - Tsubamegaeshi Hen
- Higurashi no Naku Koro ni Rei - Saikoroshi Hen

I almost feel like I can't review any of the portions of this series properly until I've finished them all, but I'll give it a shot. The atmosphere in this first arc is brilliant. The village's alternating feelings of warmth and darkness are both displayed wonderfully, which lends it an ethereal feeling of utter bizarreness - which is totally fitting for the story. It presents a lot of mysteries and questions that I absolutely can't wait to (hopefully) figure out and/or have explained! Can't wait to read the rest... A wonderful start to a hopefully awesome series.

Edit: Having read the entire series now, I feel comfortable coming back and adding to this review. I feel this arc is the strongest of them all, as it can stand as a single story OR springboard someone into the entire series. It also can't be beat for the chilling atmosphere it creates. In subsequent arcs, the events are no less horrific (at times, even MORE so), but the sudden creepiness is no longer as unexpected and doesn't cause the same chills down the spine that you'll get here (supposing this manga is your first introduction to the series).

Bottom Line: If you read this and are fascinated by the blood/gore/creepiness, keep reading. If you read this and find the unanswered questions and mysteries intriguing, keep reading. If you read this and found the violence offensive or got frustrated by the lack of explanation for characters' behavior - you might want to stop here and call it a day.

This was my favorite arch in the series. Prolly because I didn't know what exactly it was about yet so when things did start moving it grabbed my attention. You know, with the killing and all. I thought it was a random slasher manga at first, but it all comes together. Slowly but surly the mystery of Hinamizawa is solved. Moral of the story: Violence is sometimes the answer.
