The main character is Carol, a blonde-haired, blue-eyed American teenager from a wealthy family with an interest in Egyptology studying in Cairo. When her mentor discovers the tomb of a young pharaoh, a curse is put on the excavation team and Carol. The curse sends her back in time to ancient Egypt, where she becomes embroiled in the affairs of Egypt and other ancient countries such as Assyria and Babylonia. Carol meets Memphis, a handsome young pharaoh whose tomb she excavated in modern times. Despite his headstrong, at first violent nature, they fall deeply in love. This angers Memphis's half-sister, the Priestess Isis, who has longed to marry him. Carol, due to her exotic looks and curious ability to tell the future, becomes a major player in ancient history.

In 1991, it received the 36th Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo.

STOP comparing this to Red River

Like many readers, I also started reading this manga after reading Red River. Initially I was put off because although they have similar themes their also very different. But after reading more of it I found I actually preferred Ouke No Monshou.

Yes, it's cheesy, repetitive and definitely not for everyone. But I think people should stop taking it so seriously. Remember that this manga was written long before Red River was. It's extremely unfair that so many people are giving it a low ratings.

Although I must admit the story has alot of loose ends, when you start reading it you keep on reading it. I couldn't stop but on th eother hand if there really are 51 volumes I really wonder if the story will be able to keep your intrest.

Do they ever learn?

I tried reading this book after I was told that is was like Red River and Basara. The only thing that is similar is the historical settings. I didn't like the characters. The plot was too repetitive. There was no character growth. I kept reading because I thought since the characters were so bad they had to improve but that didn't happen.

Why is Carol constantly traveling by herself when she knows that she's going to be kidnapped like 5 times before she makes it to her destination and back or travel to another time. How many times must she blurt out info about the past while in the past and not expect the people to think that she's a goddess. And if they thought that she knew things about the future why do they disregard all her warnings. She cries way too much. No in the past or future cares about what Carol wants and she mostly just goes along with what others want her to do. She was just too weak a character to base 53+ vol manga on.

I feel like Memphis and all the other guys that claim they were in love with Carol were all jerks. There was very little difference between them (expect the king of Assyria). If she hadn't met him first, she probably could have ended up with any of them. He made her a slave as punishment for not liking him, broke her arm and blames her, is constantly harming her by just hugging her, threatens to kill all the servants in palace if she doesn't marry him, and the list goes on and on. He never apologizes, treats her like an object that will make the nation greater, and disregards how she feels. I don't think he really loved at all. The author doesn't really show how she falls in love with him. She just says that he's becoming cuter and all of a sudden they're madly in love.

For a manga this long, the main character needed to be mentally stronger and develop through out the story. It's a shame. The storyline had some real potential.

I've only read 14 volumes so far, and things get a little annoying^^
The story is repetitive, the characters don't seem to grow, and the arts ancient(much like that time period).
-The way the author draws blood, tears, & eyes is SO weird, yes?
- Carol been trying to run away from Memphis for what 5 times now?--> please someone help me keep count! again does anyone ever tell her that she needs to come up with a new plan after the first 4 times?
- Carol gets captured and or kidnapped for what three times now?--> does anyone have exact figures?
-Carol goes back and forth from home like twice--> this is bound to happen at least 5 more times, her family seriously needs to catch the pattern
-How many failed attempts at killing Carol has Memphis's creepy incestuous sis numbered? More than 3 and still counting?
-How many times is Carol going to believe she has American rights in Egypt--> ancient Egypt no less? I feel like screaming at her: GET WIT DA PROGRAM SHIT HEAD!! IF YOU OPEN YOUR EYES ABIT YOU SEE THAT THIS AINT AMERICA NO MORE FUCK IT AMERICA DOESN'T EVEN EXIST!!!
- she should stop trying to avoid being called a goddess--> I'm mean if people thought I was some god especially uneducated stupid people I'll roll with it.
-Despite all the story's issues I'm still reading it, but I'll probably die at the 20th volume or something. I see its similarities with Red River but Red River is sooooo much better I recommend it 1000+ times over this.
-Can anyone tell me if the pattern I detected repeats itself over the span of 36+ volumes?
@Thrudgelmir & Mangalover2000 I agree with you two sooo much, yet why do I keep reading this? naaaah I probably stop in the next 3 volumes or so (I really can't imagine anything new happening)

Ouke no Monshou is wonderful, but that Vietnamese version of the Esthetique is awful. They should have catch the original Ouke no Monshou to translate.

This is a wonderful classic. The plot is extremely captivating and really gets you hooked. The art is dated and that's the beauty of it.

Admittedly, it does have its flaws, but it really depends on your preferences. Yes, themes can get repetitive (kidnapping, Carol wanting her American rights, plots to kill Carol, etc etc) but what long series doesn't? i.e. Glass Mask, Maya always can't capture her character at first, then she "gets" it, then is hailed as a genius. I still enjoy and love the series.

Carol can also be a little silly at times, but I think that's a charming aspect of the manga. I don't think she is meant to be one of those "omg, I really idolize her, she is so strong/smart/great/amazing" heroines. I think she's supposed to be just an average girl, thrown into a situation beyond her imagination by chance, and she's just trying to find her way. Instead of criticizing her, I just enjoy her adventures.

All in all, a great series and favorite of mine. If the 50 something volumes were scanlated I'd read it all in a day smile Worried about the "hiatus" status though-- I hope this series can one day be completed!

Art --- 10
Story --- 7
Characters --- 7

The art is old style. For me there is no problem with that I can apreciate modern and old mangas art. Nothing to much to say. I think it's beautifull the hairs, the landscapes...
The story, like other comments says, it tends to be repetitive and boring if you whant to read more than 2 volumes in the same day. The strategy is good and the story it's not light like some other storical shoujos and better in my opinion then Red River but nothing too much interesting.
The characters... well... they are unrealistic. Take for exemple the love Memphis have for Carol. The good think is they aren't "that much clichées.

Read it if you like historical shoujo mangas and don't mind some silliness.

Cheesy and Melodramatic

The story is very cheesy and melodramatic, but that's part of the appeal. If you're not into that don't read it, if you are you'll enjoy it.

Watch out though. The online scanlation is total and utter garbage, find another way if you can.

If this is a good manga, I can't tell. The translation is so god awful, it's barely understandable. I don't believe even an editor could help here... they must have chosen some words at random and stuck them in the middle of sentences. I tried, really I tried, to get through some portion of this, and if it's ever translated from Engrish to English, I might try again.

I agree with the other comments...this is a VERY repetitive and i kept on reading becos some part of me just want to see Memphis be nicer and more that's gonna ever happen...sigh...
But by now we should know the ending. Carol gets pregnant, gives birth and Memphis dies when his son is only 2. Carol decides to go back to the future and left her child with the prime minister of Egypt and jumps into the Nile. In the future, one Memphis breathed his last, Ryan Lead, Carol's eldest brother(who is adopted by the way) suddenly gets all the memories of Memophis during his days in ancient Egypt. Turns out he's Memphis' reincarnation. Which probably explains why he could go back in time to the desert and shoot the bullets into Prince Ishmin. Carol returns, finds out, they are both happy and they live happily ever after. The End. And now i'll just wait for the final chapter, with this final scene. Lol.
