lol to the jerk above me: its possible for more then one manga to show what it truly means to be a monster.

if violence, action, gore, war, monsters, and hardcore characters are things you like, you will automatically fall in love with this series. behind all the insane mind numbing violence, alucard has alot of depth, and your always learning something new about him, and what it truly means to be a "monster" in every sense of the word. the story has great pacing, with something interesting always happening, and progressing the story (i cant think of one thing in the series that i would change or take out). theres not much i can say without writing spoilers, ill just say that its one of the best mangas of its genre, and i cant think of anyway it could of been better.

A great manga!!!

Well, finally this manga has ended and I just have read the last chapter. And so the review is...

-The artwork is very good and usually detailed (overall, not in every scene). By the same token many scenes are simply bloody and gory.

-Plot: probably the greatest weakness and the reason I am rating 9 and not more this manga. Frankly the plot is weak, although there were hints of something big or mysterious... well, there is nothing of the sort for making it a great plot. The good side of the plot is that the three factions (Hellsing/church/major's army) are totally demential, giving a suspenseful atmosphere. And there are a couple of twists that will make you say 'whhhaaattttt?!?!?!' (the betrayal and how to kill an invincible monster). Another good point is that the plot does not seems to be extended artificially by adding 'brand new and disposable' enemies or sub-plots useless to the main plot.

-Characters. Definitely the most outstanding part in this manga. Characters are extremely cool, funny and definitely memorable. This is of the few mangas where even the secondary characters are as enjoyable and memorable as the main ones.

So overall this is a great manga with lovely characters, given you are fine with bloody/gore scenes.

its a good manga...but not great, people made it sound like it was legendary. but it wasn't. just alot of blood and gore non-stop and that was it. the plot was lacking development and it felt like people where fighting to no reasons sometime....

but the fighting was great. it was the only thing that made me keep reading...if you like blood and just fighting with alot of dark themes, you will LOVE this manga...but for me it was ok.

Dark

This manga is so dark, and the thing that vampires are scary, for once, instead of the usual shoujo cliché (since vampires are usually used in shoujo romances), it's what I appreciate the most.
Alucard has a pretty complex personality. On the first sight he may seem like a crazy monster who enjoys fighting, but on a closer look you see that he never actually starts a fight without a reason. Well it's not like he ever gets bored since there is always some idiot to start one. His relationship with the other characters is kind of hard to explain. More than care about them, he seems to respect and trust his friends, but the same thing goes for some of his enemies. When they are weak he destroys them without thinking, but when it comes to stronger ones, he is not that quick to annihilate them and takes his time to enjoy it.
I also admire that the author doesn't only focus on Alucard, but on the other characters as well. Everyone, including the minor antagonists are given a background and motives and have a role in the plot, this way avoiding the fillier kind of feeling.
The artwork it's not that great, but the story and the atmosphere totally cover for it.

I enjoyed the manic quality that increases with every chapter you read. Definitely not for the faint of heart. Highly recommended for those who appreciate sheer insanity.

Although at first sight hellsing comes off as a particularly gruesome manga that is out to show you that vampires are malicious monsters with their own sense of logic( that defies any form of justice) but when you stop to look and contemplate it, it forms a intriguing plot with complex characters. Hellsing has two levels that can appeal to many readers, as while containing various action scenes that capture the viewer it also takes time to observe characters actions and consider the possibility that in their own way each character has a sense of rightousness although it may disagree with others opinions (protagonists and antagonists alike).
Hellsing moves at a reasonable pace to explain itself as it goes, but fast enough to ensure something is constantly happening. It looks into many historical events and complicated ideas (from psycho nazi's to quantum physics to the original dracula and vlad III) and adapts them to create a brilliant story with stunning twists, complex personalities and an awesome sense of humour that leaves you hanging for more.

Maybe a bit too much violence...

I genuinely enjoyed the series though. My favorite characters are easily Integra Hellsing and Alucard (ahh... good old bram stoker references), one of my favorite things about this manga is its use of literary and historical referencing. I probably would have preferred it if they had focused more on the character development, as opposed to the gratis violence, but other than that I really loved this series. The Nazi regime attack didn't seem all that plausible to me, merely because I can't imagine people following a crazy nutcase like that without his putting more effort into convincing them to fight with him. People followed Hitler because they thought he'd save Germany from its powerlessness and its economic slump, not because he told them he loved war and violence as this villian does. The whole Nazi arch was a bit too much for me and the violence became so frequent I almost became bored by it. I liked the ending though. The art was very good, but I got kind of tired of reading five or six pages in a row with nothing but violence and sfx. Like I said though, all around good series with awesome characters.

If you like/don't mind excessive gore and some kickass action this is what you're looking for.
Theres manga with better art than this one, but at least to me the art helped creating that special atmosphere for the story that I am missing in other manga of the same genres.
The characters are all crazy and they remain crazy even after the mangaka started explaining about their different backgrounds.
The plot is there, and thats it.

Reading this summary i can't believe I just wrote about one of my all-time favourite mangas. smile
It might not seem much, but if you're looking for kickass gorey blood crazed action with vampires zombies nazis and werewolves, this manga can easily become one of your all time favourites as well.
And before I forget, since I usually don't believe in the genre tags:
Other than in the anime, there actually IS comedy in this manga like the genre tags imply.
The historical tag can be removed though since its way more fiction than fact.

10/10 because of the ending (light spoiler, won't mind if you're only looking for kickass in this manga)
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Alucard is still alive even though the whole plot revolves around people trying to kill him :D

[edit by mod, Warning: Possible spoilers]
Think there is love, like Ceres and Bernadette, and there is master-servent love Ceres and Alucard(Alukard admits existence of love in the end), and thiere is parent-child love(it's something like that, not literelly) Father Anderson and Maxwell.

Well these are the main chars smile There are other emotions between these characters, BUT I see "love" is not banned from this manga. Maybe I am too optimistic.

OH,no! release of OVA IV is moved to 22Feb. I am gonna grow a beard waiting for it... Aa-ah... and heare I thought this year will end with somethn good to watch...

It has a good plot. Its way out there like berserk but with no nudity, if i remember correctly.I personally like this manga a lot and would have given it a 10 but the speed at which this comes out is at like snail pace. Its like one volume a year since it started 1997 -_-.
