A Monster of a Series...

[edit by mod,possible spoilers ahead]

I will not talk about how Hiyo almost gets raped in almost every other chapter. I will not talk about how Kouro, her "fiance," is sometimes the one attempting the rape. (But it's in the name of TRUUU LUV so apparently it's all okay.) I will not talk about the incredibly ridiculous outfit that Hiyo has to wear for her school uniform. I will not even talk about Kouro's father's hair, although that is the one of the only redeeming features of this manga.

Instead, I will talk about Hiyo and how special she is. Hiyo is so special that she gets accepted into a private school without even applying. Hiyo is so special that she gets greeted by the entire school as soon as she walks in the doors. Hiyo is so special that she has a fiance that she doesn't even know about. Hiyo is so special that she has a demon for a father that she doesn't know about. Hiyo is so special that said fiance and said father are part crow-demon, supposedly the strongest and most noble of all of the demons. Hiyo is so special that all the guys want to rape her. Hiyo is so special that almost every girl she meets at first wants to hurt her for being so special. Hiyo is so special that all of this doesn't really matter because everyone ends up being her loving friend later. Hiyo is so special that when she gets throw of a cliff/tower/something, she grows white wings and finds out that she's the the legendary White Crow, most special of all special crows. Hiyo is so special that at the end of the series... know what? I don't even want to touch the end of the series.

Reading this felt like I was stomaching garbage.
Actually, I would have rather have done that than read this.

I think this should get an award for being terrible because it takes skill to make something this godawful.

So we have this chick who supposed to be all plain and stupid and stuff (even though she has perfect hair, a cute face, and huge t*tties), who gets into this high school that she hasn't bothered to do any research on. But you know she's a shoujo protagonist and they're expected to be as dumb as bricks.
This could be used to make a somewhat decent story, or at least a mediocre one but alas it's horrible:
Unlikable protagonist who's the most unlikable Mary Sue ever. (Even Bella from Twilight pales in her comparison.)
Idiotic love interest Gary Stu who attempts to rape the Mary Sue every three minutes. All he can think about is sex sex sex. Because in a relationship where you barely know the chick, it's totally alright to sex her up against her will every chance you get (sarcasm). It's like this mangaka makes him this way to fulfill her own messed up sexual fantasies.
Stupid ideas. Making her some legendary, gorgeous white-winged tengu. Having every man she's ever had eye contact with fall in love with her. Wtf?

I can't believe I read this.
Or someone put their time and effort into scanning and translating this.
I need some aspirin.

A main character running around almost getting raped by everyone only she is saved RIGHT in time by her gross pervert fiance or someone else that is also perverted. So really I dont know if you could call that being saved I guess thats the best it's going to get for her.

and I dont even know what the plot is. It seemed to be mainly based on perverted and ridiculous (and not funny) situations. Twas not my cup of tea. And although I didn't read all of it (I feel kind of bad still reviewing it but I really had to stop) it was really lacking in plot, seriousness and decency from what I could see. Maybe it gets vastly better as time goes on I really don't think so though... I mean as far as stories go it could be a lot worse I suppose but still this is 12 whole freaking volumes long. My experience with this one was filled with a bunch of WTF moments.

But I mean that's my opinion. See for yourself. It really just depends on your tastes because apparently 300 other people love it, which baffles me.

Not the worst, not the greatest

As you can tell from all of the comments, there are those who will enjoy this story and those who will not.

If you're not a fan of women who are sexually harassed and don't stand up for themselves, then don't read this. Please note that I'm not saying that she doesn't have a backbone - in certain situation she does - but when it comes to the smutty scenes, she goes "Oh no! This can't happen!" but waits to be saved/interrupted. If that's going to annoy you, don't read it.

The male lead has a typical smutty-lead jealous demeanor, and he does regularly try to force his will upon her. If that's going to annoy you, don't read it. (He does get some better about forcing his will on her, but he remains jealous.)

Yes, the story is choppy in places, but it did have enough mystery to keep me reading. The story does go in simple arcs, so it's relatively easy to put down and pick back up again later, if that's your desire.

The art is fairly nice. The characters are all cute (even the parents - there's a story reason for why they're all so young). And I liked the majority of the personalities of the characters and their interactions. They were fairly typical archetypes in most cases, but they were still interesting.

The end... I didn't find it nearly as bad as most people seem to have. I didn't think it was rushed or hard to understand. It was a bit odd that
Spoiler (highlight to view)
the male lead was supposed to be "all powerful" but he was supposedly beaten up by a rival toward the end. One would have expected him to go completely "evil" and she would have to bring him back from that state, but that's not what happened. Perhaps this is what confused others so much.
That's probably the most inconsistent issue with the story. However, I didn't think the ending was that bad. The characters stayed true to who they had been all along, which worked for me.

I debated whether or not I wanted to give it a higher mark, but I do agree with some of the other comments about drawbacks of the story and characterizations.
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Hiyo's refusal to even attempt to learn to fly or fight off an attacker really began to bother me toward the end.
I had hoped some of those things would be resolved better.

I read it and didn't mind it, but that dosen't mean I'll read this again. Love Monster definately had it's strong and weak points. Sadly, the weak ones are what kept me from really liking this manga.

First of all, the strong points, which is what kept me reading. It was light hearted and funny at times, and made me laugh on occasion. I also didn't mind the plot, although as one reviewer before me has pointed out, it was a little choppy at times. Lastly, it was the mysteries unanwsered in Love Monster that kept me going (i.e. about Hiyo and kurou, which I won't spoil for you), and it is ultimately what made the manga really bearable for me.

Nonetheless, it was the weaknesses about this manga that made it far less enjoyable. The big down side so far about Love Monster is the heroine, who I found myself utterly despising despite my efforts not to. She was just to thinkheaded and silly for me to like her, and the number of times she was rescued and almost sexually assaulted frustrated me no end. The other down side was the smut, which while I don't mind in stories, seemed here a little distasteful here.

I seemed to have ranted about this a little more than I intended. Still, overall I would recommend it. However, if you looking for a supernatural manga along these lines with more likable characters and decent plot, I'd say try Vampire Knight first.

It isn't a bad shoujo manga and overdose of bishies most girls will probably enjoy, however the plot line is very plain - the heroine gets kidnapped, sexually assaulted and then saved by the hero, rise and repeat.

It was fun for the first 10 times or so but after that it went dull. Once any now handsome bishie appears it is clear that he will attack and grope the heroine all around... Kind of plain if you ask me, Miyagi definitely lacks the originality here.

Good sides - humor and a good art, yet the story was too repetitive for my taste.

Boring romance, stupid female lead turned uber Mary Sue

The only redeeming qualities of this manga are that 1) the art is pretty decent and 2) Osora (the main female) didn't immediately swoon when the man male said she was his fiance. In fact, she seemed pretty upset about it and constantly tried to ditch him. Unfortunately, since this is a bad shoujo manga, she did eventually fall for him.

It wasn't horrible until about the third time Osora was almost raped. I don't understand why the men at this school are so sex-starved and why they all concentrate on her. Osora is also dumb as fucking bricks, and not in an endearing way. The romance was hideously boring with a typical mostly impassive, stoic love interest, and the "monster" forms of the students are unimaginative.

What really prompted me to stop reading, though, was when Osora went full Mary Sue mode with her

snow-white crow wings and being some legendary being or something.
I just couldn't stomach any more after that.

I must say I was a little wary at the summary of this manga. It seemed too out there for me to like it but I was bored and wanted to read some manga so I tried it anyway. I'm so glad I did because this manga is hilarious! I really like that it's not your everyday school life romance manga and that it's a bit wacky.

I love this story so much, when i first started reading this i never thought I would enjoy it so much as the synopsis put me off a bit.Although the scanlation is taking a bit long it is still worth the wait.
Hiyo is so idiotic but surprisingly I like her.
Anyway you should definately read this as it is a really entertaining story.

I was really really impressed!
When I heard somebody talking about it on, I was like,"Love Monster.. double-yoo-tee-eff?" haha. Then when I looked around for it and started to read it, the only thing I wasn't all that happy with was the art.
But it totally grew on me! It's so weird.. Your first glance is like,"Ahh!! Get some lessons", that's mean but I thought that it wasn't that great, but then when I started reading it I was overcome by the cuteness, and I fell in love!! Art, story, and all.
Except the characters. L, you meet in in.. I think maybe the 49th chapter.. L is like.. my total idea type!! ♥_♥ Except for the fact that he.. Oh well, you'll find out! But his personality is so my type!! If I meet somebody like that.. they're mine >_< L!!! I LOVE YOU!
Oh, and read it. You won't be disappointed
