idea is an old one, but execution is well done

The gender reversal isn't a new idea, but neither is it one that's well executed in other mangas. Too often does the weak male have few redeeming qualities, and too often is the strong girl hopelessly lovestruck. Takamiya, our male protagonist, may be physically weak, but he's not a douche bag like other male leads; he's thoughtful, kind, and caring. He realizes his deficiencies and rather than wallowing in depression, he tries to proactively make up for them. Kagari, on the other hand, may seem like a stereotypical silent and strong character, but she's much more than that. They make a really great pair.

Also, the art and humor are really well done. I totally cracked up when Kagari called Takamiya "my princess", and I love Takamiya's reactions to the things Kagari does. All in all, a nice read that's done well with an idea that's often executed horribly.

Every negative score.

I compiled the reason that this manga gets negative scores in one comment.
1) the main guy isn't the strongest thing in the universe and i cant handle the woman being stronger.
2) the plot is to slow for my add riddled little mind
3) mary sue

and my answers for each are, there are thousands of other manga that all have the big stupid fight scenes that the plot advances so fast that it will snap your neck if you skip a chapter, and if you want to say mary sue, take a look at almost any other shonen manga and tell me that the main character isn't mary sue bait at the very least.

I like the main fighter isn't a guy, and i also love that we didn't have to watch the stupid "lets take a 4 chapter training break so you can tier up and kick the new badass of the weeks ass"

the main guy isn't a douche and the main girl isnt a bitch... you have any idea how rare that is just outside of all the other combinations?
i love this story, no matter how it will turn out... unless it ntr's at some point.

A really good manga about Witches& Witchcraft!

This is one of the few mangas I read about witches. Interesting ideas, nice character design, likeable characters and this manga has some good and detailed art. I read the first 9 chapters, and I think the character development of the male protagonist is pretty good (i.e. in just 9 chapters, although I am expecting much better development in future chapters) and the chemistry between the male and female protagonists is really good; they are pretty cute too when they are together. One "drawback" is that this manga is getting slow releases in Japan (I heard that it's a bi-monthly release? But the mangaka gets more time to work on this magnificient manga). This manga gets from me a temp score of 9 out of 10 (in the hope that there will be a deeper story/plot so it could mature into an awesome manga).

The series has already been on for a year in Kodansha's Good Afternoon Magazine. Keeping in mind that Witch Craft Works is released 6 times a year, or once every two months, I think we can safely conclude that this series penned by Mizunagi Ryuu-sensei is pretty much, going to continue. There are 7 confirmed releases in Japan already. This means that, if there ever was a 1 year or 6 issue trial, then that trial has been successfully overcome.

As to what makes Witch Craft Works the way it is, I wouldn't know. It has an undefinable element. Well, whatever it is, it managed to capture my interest, and a lot of other people's as well.

I wouldn't go so far as to call it unique. Maybe its just the attitude of Kagari. Her face is inscrutable. She's so deadpan, yet she delivers jokes with a straight face, sometimes even in a derogatory manner at Takamiya's expense. She makes fun of his weaknesses in her own way, but she does it all with that same, expressionless face. You'd think that her face was made out of marble cause it simply has no expression, not even when her "princess" is in danger.

Anyway, I liked this series so much that I begged Animexis to allow me to work it.

lol I'm good at begging

Fun Manga w/ Interesting Characters
by AMetroid

Rating: 9.0  / 10.0
The male lead isn't strong, but all things considered I think is portrayed acting in a manner that an average guy might act.
The female lead hasn't been really fleshed-out yet. Making her stoic with so many outstanding characteristics and no real defects dose make her less interesting. However there are some hints that the author may be going the rout of slowly introducing a more complex character, rather then one that can be described in 2-3 words.
The other supporting characters haven't been given much time yet, but they all look to add some rather interesting flavor to the series.

I really like the art style in depicting the magic and it's design.

Rating: 4 of 5 (as of ch11)
A rather fun manga so far. With some further development, and if the magic doesn't feel too Deus ex Machina, then I can see this being a 5 star manga.

Excellent story

We could say that this manga takes the cake for fantasy high school stories. I loved the "My princess" part - it was a new fresh breeze to cool my aching head from all those cliches that have sprung up recently. Oh, and the main heroine - apart from being insanely gorgeous, princess like - is inhumanly strong, inhumanly heartless and has, what I believe to be, a subtle sense of humour.

Better on the 2nd read-through

First read was really confusing but may be that's because I was reading through really fast. After reading it again it was pretty entertaining and the art is kinda unique. A refreshing read to be honest. Lots of negative comments here but I do not mind any of those. The plot, if any, will unfold eventually.

well don't take this manga seriously and expect too much of it
but it has funny moments and twists and avert some clichés and tropes
so what if witchcraft is sufficently advanced science? and it works too ?

Scanlations also released by 4chan

This series has a slight Alice in Wonderland feel to me with the way certain protagonists have exaggerated behavioural styles and the antagonists have fanciful incomplete approaches to taking on Ayaka. Hopefully Honoka will begin to justify his presence as the only male character with any appreciable time in the story. So far, he's been a wooden character only doing things needed by the plot as opposed to having the character drive the plot. He needs to be more than well-armed driftwood floating wherever the currents take him on the sea of fate.

Scanlations in english have also been released for Witch Craft Works on the /a/ subforum of 4chan as a community effort by whoever is in the /a/ subforum and is interested at that time. Translated releases on the forum are accompanied by the archived translated release on mediafire DDL. Chapter 05 was released Jan 27, 2011. Chapter 07 was released on May 28, 2011. Chapter 08 was released on June 03, 2011. Chapter 09 was released on July 13, 2011 with a simultaneous mediafire DDL.
