If you love tsukkomi, sarcastic comments and irony...
Plus a 2000s yakuza/delinquent manga vibe (like GTO or Gokusen), this is the manga for you!
The reaction scenes when something bizarre happens are just the best, I can't tell you how many times I cried laughing in the middle of the night. There's no really any annoying characters you'll hate, and sometimes there are heartwarming and real touching chapters instead of all fun and games.
Pick it up, it will definitely worth your time.

Fantastic Humor, But Some Characters Better than Others

I find myself looking forward to Hitomi and Nitta for laughs and Anzu for 'feel good' moments. The absurdity of Hitomi's lifestyle and the situations she and Nitta get in haven't gotten old. I'm impressed that the mangaka can balance humor with the 'feels' you get from Anzu's personality and story as well. Hina herself is kind of a one-trick horse and the chapters featuring her aren't particularly funny. She's somewhat of a foil to the hard-working and empathetic people in her life but ends up coming off as the least likable character as a result. It's hard to find her obliviousness and selfishness funny or endearing when, if she makes an effort or changes for others, she usually winds up reverting by the end of the chapter.

Hitomi is the best...

The characters make this series pretty awesome. Niita, Fuuka and Hitomi are the best. Surprisingly Hina our main gal is kinda of Meh. She's a little too 1-dimensional, unlike some of the other characters her traits haven't been pushed to the max or obvious conclusion. I agree with jjm152, Hitomi Mishima is great. Every chapter that features her is Gold and maybe she should be the main protagonist (lol). After all its kind of bad when the side characters are more interesting than the main lead. On the downside, not all the gags land, and there's a fair amount of Japanese pop culture references that may go over people's heads. Mao and some of the other characters could have used a little better development. It could benefit from an overarching plot, which seemed to be hinted at in early chapters with its scifi trappings, but became discarded for more situational comedy. Still this is a solid gag manga, with sometimes slightly darker overtones than say Gokusen which also had a main character that had ties to the Yakuza. It definitely gets better as it goes along and is recommended.

The characters are so well-written, in my opinion I like how they are written with just enough details, not too deep or too shallow and meaningless. All the characters are so abnormal and unrealistic in a good, funny way. Each has a unique trait. It's a total gag manga (at least to me), with a heavy undertone. But it's not exactly dark humor.
Just give it a shot!

Marked by black comedy that's so relentless it will hurt your gut. Every chapter of this series is absurdly funny. Even having read it several times, I find it painfully funny (painful since I will often end up out of breath). Wrote a long review for the series. The manga stays funny by constantly bringing in new scenarios. It's my #2 favorite manga of all time.

this manga is great i havnt laughed so hard at a manga in awhile for real a great read.... I would love more chapters about Hitomi Mishima... her story is too funny and interesting I want to know more.
Seriously this manga needs to turn into an anime, its just that good. Plus the manga needs more chapters with my queen Hitomi and my angel Anzu. This is one of the very few mangas where i seriously laugh out loud and at the very least get a good laugh at every chapter.

This is one of my favourite comedy mangas which owes everything to its cast: Nitta and Hitomi are for example characters larger than life. "Main heroine" Hina isn't that great at the start, but after the time gap it seems even her character starts to develop from the simple glutton.
Must read for anyone who enjoys gags and farcical misunderstandings.

Don't be mislead by jjm152's comment. The real protagonist of this manga is not Hitomi Mishima, no matter how great of a character she is. Nor is she the only star in the cast of characters; every single one of them is awesome and shines in their own way, but they will all equally make you laugh from the bottom of your heart.

Don't be mislead by the synopsis. The real protagonist and star of this manga is Hitomi Mishima.
That being said... it's great!

The characters in this series are some of my favourites; they are some of the most interesting and entertaining people I've read XD
Characters are the strong point of this manga. Not just the main cast but almost every character continuously develops through the chapters. It starts with a small cast, but slowly and surely the cast grows.
The humour style in this manga is deadpan - not to say they don't show any emotions at all. But I really love the style, especially how the characters tend to get mixed up in amusing misunderstandings, yet somehow it ends up benefiting them (though they are understandably confused hahaha!). Does not feel gag-ey at all.
There are subtle 'feels' moments in this series. There are 'growing up' and 'parenthood' themes in it but they're not overly dramatic. I like how they don't overemphasize it yet its there. There's also some implied heavy undertones, but they're just implied and little is really explained; overall its still quite a lighthearted series.
I also love that the chapters are quite long.
Highly recommended. Need more!
P.S. Hitomi is the most terrifying middle school girl ever, while Yoshifumi is the most patient guy ever - even though he's a Yakuza! XD
