Taking Female Objectification to a Whole New Level
by FeyFujoshi

I like this series. I really do. Fantasy shounen ai is one of my fav genres. The art work is quite detailed and creative, the mangaka (and characters) are quite honest, that is to say you can feel that they perform their roles quite well and reflect on the roles which they perform. The story progresses quite well too. However, the manner in which the female characters are treated within this manga is quite disturbing for me. There are moments when the rhetoric of females are child incubators is challenged. It is challenged many times; however, it is ultimately not made part of the protagonists’ (the narrative’s) driving force, and that’s sad for me. Tateno sensei goes half-way only.

Beautiful story

I know Tateno-sensei as autor of yaoi manga. The first works which I read from her were Yellow and Hero Heel. I bought 9th Sleep without expecting anything from it. For the true I even misspelled title for 9th Sheep. biggrin Probably because of Tateno's different manga called Blue Sheep Reverie.

Shortly after I bought 9th Sleep, my friend told me this manga really suck. Because there is no yaoi scene inside. She called it poor shounen-ai and very tragic story. That's why I thought it will be real tragedy with bad ending what it's my favorite story attribute. Unfortunately after reading this manga for first time, I was disappointed. The story was great but the ending wasn't as I expected. sad

I read this story again after more than 8 years without remembering much from it. And I was suprised of quality of it. I really like Tateno-sensei art style. But as I growed older I found her yaoi stories very simple and boring. Yet 9th Sleep is very different. It's not yaoi even shounen-ai. There is only brothers love and hate. And those reincarnations and people's lives... It was powerful and emotional story. I am really missing those elements in others Tateno's works.

I think 9th Sleep is beautiful story which could be little longer.

The comment and rating of a non-fujoshi

This was mistagged as BL for the longest time (and even published in English by June), hence the weird comments. 9th Sleep is in no way shounen-ai or yaoi; the misunderstanding probably arose because of the mangaka's reputation as a fairly popular yaoi author/artist.

I glimpsed a few interesting concepts behind the plot, but 160+ pages is nowhere near enough to develop a proper fantasy setting and a plot which centres so strongly on said setting. The characterisation is rushed, the plot's all over the place, and the world building's practically non-existent, despite showing so much promise.

Worth a shot if you're bored and browsing for an unusual story framework, but not if you're actually in the mood for a proper story.

The story is ok, but if you are expecting anything resembling LOVE (other than fraternal i mean) this is not the place to search... not even a hint!!! It is not Yaoi and it is not Shounen Ai.

This was a cute story, and I love the art. I get everything I can from this mangaka because I love her work. Too bad it's a oneshot, because it could very easily have been longer with a lot more added to the story. It's not one of her best works, but it's still a good read.

I enjoyed reading this story. It may not exactly be a true shounen ai, but it is still an interesting story. I enjoyed the Mangaka's comment on human emotions. Weakness or strength? Read and decide for yourself. This is one shounen ai anyone would enjoy reading. Enjoy.

shounen ai?

This story is suppsedly shounen ai. The only part where I could kind of see it was in the extra, so in other words this can be read straight. If you want to read it that is. It's not that great.
