LiH is one of my favorite mangas, it's a fun, sexy, gory, romcom about self growth. It's a romance story on face value, but also something more. I can't recall the last manga that was so unique, that I feel flawlessly married these genres to make something this interesting. It's a perfect pairing of nightmarish horror, and cute Waifu slice of life that I haven't really ever seen done correctly... Until LiH.
The world building done in such a short series is amazing, the love story is weird and fairly off-putting until you realize that our MC, well he's in hell for a lot of reasons. It's a story about growth and self reflection. Is it an original story? No, no it is not. But it's a story that works perfectly because of world building.
Let's talk about the world building. It's more purgetory than hell really. It's a plane of redemption, by making sure it's comfortable enough to not break the soul, but uncomfortable enough not to want to stay. There are easily explained rules that the author wisely didn't spend pages pouring over. Demon's are almost indifferent and because humans reform the next day, they kill and maim with almost a sense of boredom. The demon's are secondary to the bigger threat, other humans. The humans are people that earned their way into hell, and are selfish, manipulative, and spiteful. The most demonic thing in hell is man.
So this is a story of a selfish unlikeable MC, with a young, ernest, and sexy demon as she tries to get him to understand that punishment isn't just being hurt, it's understanding why you are being punished as well. The name of the book isn't just a remark on their relationship, but also a statement about our MC, learning to forgive himself, and finally be able to love himself.
Is it perfect? Nope, its clear that it was rushed near the end. But that didn't stop a satisfactory conclusion. It is officially in english, and I recommend it (I paid for my manga, shocking I know) over scanlations. I know it's not my favorite manga, but I would be hard pressed to say what beats it in the genre.
