High school senior Aihara Kotoko has had a crush on Irie Naoki since freshman year. But she's been discouraged from confessing to him by a few things: he's a member of "Class A," the top ranking class in school, whereas she's in "Class F"; he gets the top score on every exam; and he's so smart, popular, and handsome that he's been class president every year. When Kotoki finally musters up the courage to present him with a love letter, though, Naoki outright refuses it, telling her point blank--with a look of disgust and boredom--that he doesn't like "stupid girls." I feel like it gets really repetitive but...it's one of those classic Shoujos. I wish there was progress (with how Irie treats her) but at least he really does care about her in a romantic way and as a partner.
A drag. Don't read

Sometimes you hope a bad anime is different from the original manga. That may be the case for some but not this one. The only way I could see any finishing all of this is through pure masochism. The toxic male lead and hopeless female lead is the reason I avoid any romance manga similar to these two characters and believe me it's common. I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of shoujo(mostly) used these two as a blue print considering so many toxic manga that came after it. This isn't a romance it's a waste of time.
Now take Hana yori Dango in a similar position as this one. Even though way better romance are out there at least boys over flowers had a balance. A push and pull. It had drama, slapstick, a female lead with more common sense. That's why I can't hate it in comparison to this because sadly I came across this first but guess which manga I actually completed.(Though I completed both animes.)
Watching the anime was bad enough, But I'm thankful I came across this just as a lesson of what bad taste in romance looks like.
Another thing if this dude is soooo amazing why is he bothering with Kotoko. Like no matter how you look at it it's mostly his fault things dragged out but at the same time if he really had a problem with her you'd think he'd make more of an effort.

Overall id say it's funny with good pacing and side characters that keep things interesting but the main characters (MC and ML) are terrible. MC is stupid and by the end, I just felt bad for her but the ML is horrible, he stings MC along for years and whenever she's about to move on he makes her follow him again and in the end he only agreed to go out with her because she was gonna move on again with someone else. He doesn't even seem to like her properly but more like he's found her less annoying now and just want that wholehearted person to continuously follow him cuz his pride won't allow her to leave.
MC is incredibly stupid for following him around for so long but she did try to stop yet ML gives her hope while his parents also want them to end up together, MC's dad was the smartest as he was kinda against it for hurting MC but that didn't last long. Also felt bad for the guy who was in love with MC as he was practically in the same relationship boat as her...
Basically it's about a delusional girl obsessed with a prideful pr*ck

Itazura na kiss is a classic. Sure there is a lot of flaws with the story but life isn’t prefect it. Irie is a smart jerk to the not so smart kotoko. He is blunt no way he would fall in love with kotoko. But She is not giving up. The point is to never give up. Their relationship is a love and hate one, and it is pretty flawed with many problem regarding the love between them. However they do change. Keep reading until they end and see the change between them. When you read the last chapter, then move on to the anime and see the end. I love the progress that goes pass high school. One of the few series that actually does that. We go to college, to marriage to parenthood. And for that I truly enjoy this series. Thank you.

I don’t understand why people hate the manga. I really enjoy it. Yeah, irie might be a jerk, but it’s as if meeting a celebrity and kotoko see him that light. As that a good relationship? Well. Who knows. And yeah kotoko is stupid but I feel that’s the charm about her. I mean how many main characters aren’t stupid. Usagi from sailor moon, naruto, heck even Goku from dbz is no different so why be upset about this one? Their relationship changes throughout the series and I can’t help but enjoy it. Some of the moment where I think it’s a typical never give up moment and it turns into something haliorious. It’s a shame about the authors death and we will never know how it will end but it was enjoy to read. Rip.

I first watched the Taiwanese version one of my favorite series, then I got curious and watched the anime and also love it that I watched it 4 times. But it took me a long time to read the manga because I admit at first I don't like Naoki's art here. But when I tried recently just until volume 11 because I read scanlation, it doesn't really bothered me at all even though I'm picky when it comes to art because the story overcomes it (but kotoko and Yuuki here are really cute). I even like it better than the anime because it is funnier and the original story.
I really enjoyed reading it always makes me laugh, feels good and doki doki. Though some may find Kotoko and Naoki's mom annoying, I find them really funny! Kotoko's love was just pure and innocent and we can't just force her to love kinchan if she only feels friendship for him (put yourselves in Kotoko's shoes specially when you already has a special feelings to someone). Though she's dumb these are the traits I really like about her: she has a pure big loving heart. She's not selfish, she really knows how to give up if she thinks that makes Irie happy (many times). She's very enthusiastic and always do her best but it's just that she always failed because of her clumsiness. She's cute, funny and adorable, has a cheerful personality that always makes Irie's house full of life. Kotoko is clingy? well I can only say that it is not entirely her fault Naoki's mother and sometimes her friends are the one who pushes her. She's also very thoughtful to others like to the little patients in the hospital
While in Irie's case in truth I pity him while reading this because he's always a victim of kotoko's clumsiness and stupidity that always made him embarrassed. That's why I can't really blame him if he's always angry with her (though he can also be teasing and encouraging to her). But he's always there and picking her up in times of trouble, I thought him really thoughtful the way he helps her even though it is not his nature that's why Kotoko's love grows more and more for him. He's just never been in love before that's why it is hard for him to express his feelings (not to mention his big pride and a pushy mother because he doesn't want to be controlled around).
Whenever I read this I always felt that I'm also a part of their family.
If someone is wondering why it was so popular and has many adaptations, well I can only say that there are more people who can appreciate it than those who don't.
I think there is more in the story and characters than what is in the surface. I love this lighthearted and heartwarming series even though it never ends the final from the anime series ends well. :-( that I really cried.
Go Kotoko, Naoki, Kotomi!
Happy Ending!
Chase Your Happiness, Always do your Best! Good Luck!
But in the end I still believe that it is how you perceive the manga some will like it and some will not.
Now I will add this to my favorite manga list: Rurouni Kenshin, Genbu Kaiden, mars, honoka ni purple, imadoki, skip beat and hakushaku to yousei!

when she volunteered to tutor them haha.. she took cared of yuuki when hospitalized and suggested Irie to become a doctor so that he can cure Nonchan's illness and she works part-time to give Irie an expensive Christmas gift for his muscle pain
I always thought that's the reason why Irie surrender his heart to her. I can't help it. I just can't help it. I hate this manga. I wanted to like it, I really did--with the title of "mother of shoujo manga" and with the author's tragic death, I really had hope for it. In essence, the plot wasn't too bad and didn't deviate too far from the shoujo cliche.
But I abhor the main characters. Kotoko is some kind of horrid offspring between Bella Swan and the girl from Fushigi Yuugi. I was sure the plot had a massive twist near the end in which Irie would be revealed to be a robot. I could see the author's idea behind it--two polar opposites becoming a couple. But that isn't a good reflection of reality. I don't want to be with someone who's the complete opposite of me--who would?? But let's delve in here:
Kotoko is by far the worst. Dumb, lazy, and so clingy to Irie that she deliberately, disturbingly follows him in whatever path he follows in life. She has no dedication to her convictions in the slightest (unless it adheres to Irie)--one moment she's ready to move out, yet one word from Irie has her moving back in before she's left the lot. The worst trait? Stringing along her high school buddy. Why doesn't she like him? Even though he's completely devoted to her and never even looked at another woman, he's not bishie-robot enough.
But she's just so stupid. It's not endearing, not in the slightest, and like another commenter said, she doesn't even try to improve herself. Temporarily, perhaps, but there is no character development whatsoever, start to finish.
I also hate that it is her *goal* (though never stated, but so shoved in your face that I don't know how you wouldn't notice) to marry Irie, like it's the be all and end all accomplishment. Work hard, do well, live fulfilled knowing you got as far as you did with your own efforts? No! Just marry that hot smart guy, he'll pay for your life.
Irie, well, can you say abusive? Not to mention ridiculously childish. He has no emotions whatsoever except anger, and he takes it out on Kotoko all the way through. How anyone could like someone with that kind of personality I'll never know. He can't admit that he likes her, either, and just bullies her like a five year old. It's so repetitive and bland, and has the worst plot devices to keep the two living under the same roof.
I wish I could like it, but I just can't. The pros-- I think the art's cute, though old fashioned. It had an okay concept, but like I said, poorly executed.
However I believe myself to be a minority. If shoujo is your one-and-only genre, you'll probably love it!

Every now and again I hit a series I want to re-read again and again, and INK is one of them. Although I think that Konoko is too friggin' stupid to survive, and Irie too smart not to have been killed by someone for his arrogance, I still love them both and I always regret when I get to the end that the mangaka passed prematurely.
My favorite things about this manga are that it's silly, but watching Konoko struggle for her love is bother heartbreaking and lovely. Irie's apparent affection for her, that he keeps under tight wraps, is also sweet, until the 10th volume when everything (seems) to culminate into what we hope for.
Still, the series goes on to vol 23, and we get to see Kotoko and Naoki grow up in various ways, as well as Yuuki and every one else. It was such a pleasure to watch them all grow up, and, really, every time I hit the last page, I'm just sad there's no more.
It does get a bit repetitive in its jokes about how clumsy and stupid Kotoko is, and how brilliant Naoki is, but... you also get to see how they fill each other out, with his brains and her heart. He can't do without her, and she can't live without him. By the end, it makes you feel like you've really endured a ride with them, like any GOOD shoujo does.
It's not the most awesome manga out there, but it's definitely one of my favorites for the rivalries, watching the "perfect" character grow as much as the "imperfect" one, and both struggling to find their way. I think that every time I re-read it... what a wonderful story (because regardless, it still ends well), but how sad it is...

Stupid and repetitive. But Irie was a hottie and the art style is nostalgic. A few good comedic moments here and there but... still stupid and repetitive. I scratch my head as to why this was so popular as a manga and as a live action drama.
