The story is of Kitano Seiichirou, a very kind and pure-hearted young man, with a horrifying, monstrous face. People being what they are, they think he's a terrifying delinquent, and there are plenty of chance misunderstandings (coupled with Kitano's convenient inability to understand what's happening around him) that propel him into the position of "school guardian", a.k.a. head thug on campus.

Funny and light hearted

I'd always skipped this because it looked like a horror/psychological manga (not my thing), but it's actually light hearted and funny. The drawing style starts out with thinner gaunter looking characters, but the style evolves. It was surprisingly good.

I had always skipped over this manga for some reason and I finally dled it the art scared me D: But it is hilarious and the art you get used too and start to enjoy :3 No seriously read this it's hilarious XD

edit: 5 years(to the day!o_o) later this manga is still a fave. My tastes have changed some in these years but this is still hands down one of the funniest manga out there. The only reason it didn't get a 10 is because the arch with the neighbors is a little boring imo.

Some parts dragged a bit but that generally doesn't happen until later on. The art takes some getting used to, especially early on. That shouldn't be much of a problem later for Claymore fans though since by the end the style had stabilized. A great read for its humor and evolution in both art and story.

Finished reading the ending and I can say though I thought it was a bit typical of these type of slice of life stories and a bit abrupt, it ended well enough. Because of that I'm upgrading this to a ten. You really can't find a better series from beginning to end.

i would find it hard to enjoy if it wasnt for the art.. having said that, the art is good, it fits the theme.. its a fun read.. just try it..

yes it seems silly, but there is something about the characters that made me love it. cant really explain it. but just read it.

OK, the art is hidiously horrible, but OH MAN it's hilarious! i mean, even i, who only likes good art manga(like vampire knight with hot guys) found it really good and entertaining.

Simply put, this is the funniest smart (not absurdist, just downright clever) comedy I've ever read. It even beats Yotsubato.

All the characters are unique and worthwhile. Their banter is just incredible to follow. A lot of the humor centers around people with unusual personality traits, which cause them to have strange ideas or perceptions. At first I believed that, given the theme of a guy who's judged for his appearance, this would be a deep story. It is a deep story in some respects, but that depth never thwarts the comedy: rather, they drive each other forward.

Although the humor doesn't really bloom until a few volumes in, and there are more "serious" storylines earlier in the series than later on.

It improves steadily and by the 5th or 6th value, the art is basically as good and consistent as Claymore's. Although the character designs for several of the characters were designed and settled on earlier on, so as a result those designs are primitive. This mangaka is a fantastic artist. Also, I love the video game references in his jokes.

An extremely worthwhile read. Give it a shot.

Art great from the beginning. I mean, how many real people got scared and run screaming after seeing Kitano first time? Before Claymore, of course.

I did not really notice the art in the beginning. As i grew older i left my rather childish belief that graphic meant everything. After reading claymore (and loving it) i got used to Yagis art style and that made me pay less attention to art and more on the story. The first volume you might read for the pure comedic thrill. You will continue to read volume 2 and then start to get hooked on the character development. This is all in all one of the best manga i have ever read. (along with Claymore, Flame of Recca, Gantz, Kiseijuu, Reborn!, Superior and many more) Yagi Norihiro is a genius. I proclaim this a must read for all hardcore manga fans

The art is bad for volume 1, but after that it is way better for the rest of the series, so don't give up on reading just because of the art. And hell, if you can't get over the art, skip the first volume, since it doesn't have anything important or substantial to the series anyways. You should be focusing on the plotline instead. I like this manga mainly because it's original and not as typical as other shounen.

the art isn't that good in the beginning - true enough
but soon it'll get better

some loose logic but overall, a very funny ride from the beginning till the end smile

kudos to manga-sketchbook team - the comedy wasn't lost in translation and their work is very professional. Thanks a lot guys ^^~
