Not worth the hype

MC just feels flat. We have an okay supporting cast that felt like it was going somewhere at one point but then it just heads to the end goal. Could've been better with more development. If you compare to other worldbuilding heavy shonens it just can't hold a candle.

Really good, but...

Started really good, became a little rushed, and then the ending was unsatisfying (not bad, but not good either). I had it rated as a 9 for most if its run until the ending dropped it to an 8 for me. Worth the read though. Anime version was amazing as well.

The best fantasy manga ever! Thanks Gotouge for this wonderful journey. Highly recommend this manga (even though the ending is slighty disappointing... But I ain't blaming Gotouge coz there's some issues going on on her part) But overall, Kimetsu no Yaiba has been the best demon slaying manga I've ever read! Love the character developments in this story. Love the determination of Kamado Tanjiro and how his love towards his family members drove him to be what he became now.

There's no pleasure in the telling or in the reading of Kimetsu no Yaiba

One comparison I like to make when describing this manga is with Mitsuru Adachi's Touch, because in both manga the main character has family member(s) who die and that becomes the galvanizing force of the story. In Touch, the brother doesn't die until something like 10 volumes in, after we've spent a lot of time with him and we've understood exactly what he means to everyone who's left behind. In this manga, we see the family for exactly 3 pages.

What I mean to say is, there's nothing that stays long enough to have its impact felt. Everything is just constantly in your face, all the time, their only purpose being to propel you to the next thing. There's no pleasure in the telling or in the reading of it, no small moments of joy or moments of awe. The story isn't going anywhere, except toward the next plot.

I'd forgive some of the initial problems if it starts feeling like a story that somebody needed to tell, but it never did. Remember that Naruto was about a lonely boy who wanted to make friends, and Fullmetal Alchemist was about a confrontation between science and god, and they established this from the very get go. Maybe if you were trapped on an island this'd be a way to pass time time, but why read this inessential, poorly written manga when you could do literally anything else?

A timeless manga
by MbG
December 26th, 2019, 11:02am
Rating: 7.8  / 10.0
Plot: 7.8/10

Plot is fast-paced and keeps you on the edge of your seat. It contains about every cliche of manga but it is GOOD cliche. As the series is coming to an end, kudos to the author for not dragging the plot to forever.

Art: 7.5/10

Basic but consistent art. Fight scenes are good. Character design is okay-ish.

Characters: 8/10

Can't hate any characters to be honest. The don't feel like fictional characters but real complete person. My least favorite character is probably the 1st Upper Moon. Maybe I have too much expectation for his backstory after Akaza's. His story fell very flat, feel like he was such a whiny ass.

Enjoyment: 8/10

This is a timeless manga. If you tell me this was created in the 90s, I'd believe it. I don't mean it was old or anything. It's just Kimetsu no Yaiba is the kind of manga that will stand the test of time.

Overall: 7.8/10

I give a ten for the MC

Oh wow, I’m so glad I started reading it and to be honest I adore the characters, specially the main character, it has a really kind way to be (in his first fights he was so kind to the enemies and also emphatic to them.... but is not like other characters who say “I understand you” it’s more of a realistic way I would say it like more of a naruto kind of but totally different), so yeah and the stories are amazing ...it doesn’t have the whole mistery and it’s developing quite amazing.

Really wished I found this sooner

I agree with comments that mentioned this series showing similar traits to other shounen mangas. But it's shounen and it's not beyond portraying MCs playing role as the "Chosen One" etc. What makes Kimetsu no Yaiba so enjoyable, for myself at least, is how humane the mangaka made the characters turn out to be. The lead characters are mostly young (to this i'm referring to Tanjirou, Inosuke and Zenitsu) who show characteristics you'd find don't stick to common tropes in shounen mangas with characters that could qualify as children (i.e. being arrogant, sulky 70% of the time, and bratty). For one, there's Inosuke. I love how the mangaka portrays Inosuke and his childishness (i.e. being competitive, wanting to overpower the MC and sometimes impulsive) but isn't arrogant enough to turn evil just to achieve his goal in becoming stronger. The fact that he was raised by a boar in the forest did not undermine that he is naive and smart in his own right. I just love him okay and the mangaka did a good job at characterising such a wholesome boy.

And Tanjirou. Reading about Tanjirou almost made me think that the story wouldn't stir into the "Chosen One" trope bcs Tanjirou really went through rigorous trials bcs the tragedy that happened to him didn't somehow planted a "Chosen One" seed or something and he's suddenly the Warrior the people has been waiting for. Like Harry Potter and his scar after Voldermort. Or Naruto and the Nine-Tails in his body. The tragedy that affected him left him with his sister's condition but he was still wholly human and it was his choice to become a demon hunter. It just makes it that more enjoyable to see him develop. Really heart-warming. Overall, all the characters are just so likeable. Even ones I thought I'd hate initially made me care so much in the end which shows how first impressions don't truly reflect a person. The mangaka utilised this so well and caught me off-guard when I least expect it. And the comedy!!! I love it sm istg. It's subtle but the characters' dialogue and expressions can be so funny I giggle too much. Just read it, you'll know what I mean.

And the art! Some may find it rough in the beginning. But for myself, I didn't find anything wrong with her style. Really love the character designs and everything else.

The strong point of this manga is the backstories

After finish reading three times chap 155 of Kimetsu no Yaiba, I can not stand the urge of writing short comment to this manga/anime to baka updates.

The strong point of this manga/anime is the backstories.

In my opinion, this manga is separated from many shounen series cause of its backstories. Almost all of background stories in this manga are really good at describing our characters. They provide us a strong connection between their strength, personality and history.
"Why do the human become demon, and who is truly devil, demon or human ?" are two questions I often see from the demon' stories through this manga.

I haven't watched this adaptation anime yet, but I hope you can forgive the genetic shounen factor of this anime and focus more from the character's backstories. They are warm and cruel at the same time, but these factor make this manga so emotional, so good.
