High school senior Aihara Kotoko has had a crush on Irie Naoki since freshman year. But she's been discouraged from confessing to him by a few things: he's a member of "Class A," the top ranking class in school, whereas she's in "Class F"; he gets the top score on every exam; and he's so smart, popular, and handsome that he's been class president every year. When Kotoki finally musters up the courage to present him with a love letter, though, Naoki outright refuses it, telling her point blank--with a look of disgust and boredom--that he doesn't like "stupid girls." About the Manga I liked it but I don't think that there is a girl that is that stupid and a boy who is that perfect
About the anime I looooove it but sometimes I felt really irritated with the hero, I mean can she really fall in love with such a cold and heartless man. I don't think I can

At first, when "shoujomagic" introduced this series, I backed off due to its old-fashioned art. However, it started to gain me some interest when a friend of mine told me that this series is so much fun, but it never got completed due to the tragic death of the author which is very regrettable. The good thing is that the 23rd volume was completed and Kaoru Tada-sensei told the ending to her husband, in which the ending was developed into anime. Also, the Taiwanese drama "It started with a kiss" comes from this manga, and it was a huge success. So I gave it a try when the licensed manga came out. I never got disappointed with it! I'm reading the manga in English version (omnibus), and I got hooked! It is very enjoyable, so hilarious. Every chapter has memorable events.
This manga gives me all the pleasure of reading because it presents a unique love story. The romance, comedy and humour, touching, and sad moments are all blended into one.
Although the art looks old fashioned and set in the 90s, the story is too good to be missed out. The dialogues, the pace of the story and the timeline fit together perfectly. And I think that the feeling of reading this manga is way different from watching the adapted live-action. In the manga, we watch the characters grow, develop, and the readers will grow fond of them too especially when each of them have their unique likeable individuality. Added to this, facial expression is Kaoru Tada-sensei's biggest manga asset. Her art may be sharp but all types of facial expression and body movement are well shown.
I've tried the scanlated version too, but I recommend the DMP licensed version over the scanlated one, because the licensed version's translation is superb and doesn't turn you off, it keeps you hooked! Let's buy the real version to spread the love of this manga, especially paying a tribute to Kaoru Tada sensei! ^_^ Sad that she died unexpectedly, leaving the remaining volumes uncompleted. Anyway, don't miss out this great manga, it is highly recommended ^_^

Basically this manga is all about being dumb + being intrusive = catching hot guys 101. Irie, although made to be "perfect" in everything, can't emote properly even if his life depends on it. The transition to love is so forced, since prior hints, if any, aren't done well.
Bottom line, if obtaining love means throwing away all your dignity is your cup of tea, go ahead and read it, otherwise, save your time. I'd give this a higher rating if the Irie actually looks hot, then at least I'd get some eye candy out of this...

Something about it pissed me off when I watched the KDrama, so then I moved onto the anime and this, and I LOVED it! Typical shoujo yet something entirely lovable. Not sure how it inspired Fruits Basket though, but I liked it none the less. It's so sad, though, how the author never got te see the manga's success.

Thank god the anime kotoko wasn't as dumb as the manga one. that was the only thing I really couldn't stand...the anime was outstandingly well done, except for the odd placed last episode but whatever, they incorporated almost everything important and did away with a completely retarded kotoko which made the story so much better, i mean she can't handle working in a restaurant? seriously. she sucked at everything she did, i don't care how much she pushed irie would not have given into that....and he wasn't that good looking....I ran thru the manga and then thoroughly enjoyed the anime. if you're fine with missing out on a few hilarious instances in the manga, just go for the anime.

dumb is unfortunate at best. dumb without the willingness to improve at all is a serious character defect. kotoko is apparently smart enough to study when she's being helped, and so it's not an innate inability, but willful disregard of other people. why anyone with any brains at all would like kotoko, nevermind fall in love with her, is quite beyond me. one doesn't have to be a pompous prick to find her insensitivity seriously aggravating; it's not just that she's inept and clueless, but she's also an intrusive stalker and constantly violates naoki's privacy. that's not "love". i just wanted to throttle her, and gave up on the manga.
furthermore, the japanese live action version of this is the worst thing i have ever had the misfortune of watching. at least with the manga you don't HEAR kotoko's shrill antics. i couldn't finish watching it, it is so bad -- and i am saying that with regret because i really like kashiwabara takashi (the actor playing naoki), but it was just impossible to continue watching with kotoko throwing inane fits every few minutes.

At first I was skeptical about this one: usual plot, usual characters, etc. (and don't get me started about the art, it is definitely not to the taste of people these days)... but don't let any of that fool you! It is funny + romantic, has great characters, and just makes you want to re-read it over and over again. It truly deserves the title of a romantic comedy! Plus, this one is so good that I looked for the raws for this for about 7 hours before rejoicing when I found it.
I know that Kotoko is probably the dumbest girl in manga history, but I think it sort of gives her this cute charm and is also a great way to create some hillarious comedy. Naoki is just... oh man, AWESOME ha ha Although he can be a huge jerk, you'll love him to bits once you get to understand him + he gets to know Kotoko better You can't expect characters to grow in just a few chapters or volumes like in most shoujos, so don't be frustrated when the characters are a bit...overwhelmingly either dumb or arrogant. Kotoko doesn't stay stupid and Naoki doesn't stay a pompous prick. It takes some time for people to grow/develop like in real life!
And where else are you going to find a shoujo where it doesn't end after they get married? It brings you along on their journey through the ups and downs of their marriage. And the romantic scenes are so...ah, they make me squeal each and every time! So, there may not be a lot of them, but they're worth it! Plus, it makes it so that the two main characters are not all over each other every chance they get like some mangas out there.
If you're worried about how it never finished because of the author's death, the anime ended with some of the notes she left behind and closed all the loose ends There's also a Japanese (Itazura na Kiss), Taiwanese (It Started With a Kiss, They Kiss Again), AND Korean (Mischievous/Playful Kiss) drama available! X)
Seriously....just read it!
