The main character is Carol, a blonde-haired, blue-eyed American teenager from a wealthy family with an interest in Egyptology studying in Cairo. When her mentor discovers the tomb of a young pharaoh, a curse is put on the excavation team and Carol. The curse sends her back in time to ancient Egypt, where she becomes embroiled in the affairs of Egypt and other ancient countries such as Assyria and Babylonia. Carol meets Memphis, a handsome young pharaoh whose tomb she excavated in modern times. Despite his headstrong, at first violent nature, they fall deeply in love. This angers Memphis's half-sister, the Priestess Isis, who has longed to marry him. Carol, due to her exotic looks and curious ability to tell the future, becomes a major player in ancient history.

In 1991, it received the 36th Shogakukan Manga Award for shoujo.

All i can say is this manga hav lots of flaws in it. i love it but, the flaws r just BAM! in front of my face. like how the hell did she fall in love with him anyway. she hated him one day and the next she love hm unconditionally. and lots of the historical info rnt very accurate. i hate to compare mangakas' works but this i hav to... red river/anatolia story wins. no competition. i gotta give you a 7, since i actually enjoy it, but still... -_-''

This is a wonderful classic. The plot is extremely captivating and really gets you hooked. The art is dated and that's the beauty of it.

Admittedly, it does have its flaws, but it really depends on your preferences. Yes, themes can get repetitive (kidnapping, Carol wanting her American rights, plots to kill Carol, etc etc) but what long series doesn't? i.e. Glass Mask, Maya always can't capture her character at first, then she "gets" it, then is hailed as a genius. I still enjoy and love the series.

Carol can also be a little silly at times, but I think that's a charming aspect of the manga. I don't think she is meant to be one of those "omg, I really idolize her, she is so strong/smart/great/amazing" heroines. I think she's supposed to be just an average girl, thrown into a situation beyond her imagination by chance, and she's just trying to find her way. Instead of criticizing her, I just enjoy her adventures.

All in all, a great series and favorite of mine. If the 50 something volumes were scanlated I'd read it all in a day smile Worried about the "hiatus" status though-- I hope this series can one day be completed!

i juz found this manga today when I went and check the Shogakukan award thingy,
the summary is pretty good which interest me, after reading it, it's okay then around chapter 6 it ticked me off,, TT_TT
the family told her to be careful not to be seen as she have blonde hair and blue eyes,
then she was seen by a soldier, then she went out on her own where she was seen by Memphis, then after being seen she's didn't even think about the consequence that not only her but also the family who took her in *sigh*

So, like many of Ouke no Monshou readers, I found this comic after reading Red River. In my opinion, Red River is much better.
List of Reasons:
1. No sufficient character developement occurs. One example being: Why does Carol fall in love with Memphis? (Besides the fact that he's, and I quote, "Getting cuter and cuter.")
2. Reoccuring themes. Ex: Carol is constantly getting kidnapped.
3. None of the characters have backstories. One example being: Why is Ruka so loyal to Izumi (Besides the fact that Izumi is a prince.)
4. To much unneeded dialog. Ex: When someone is being stabbed they don't usually cry out "I'm dying!" or "I'm dead!". Another example being: Just because there are three people in this panel doesn't mean they all need to say or think something.
5. Fast paced storyline. Ex: When Carol is first kidnapped by Angon somewhere in chapters 53 to 55 Carol bites Angon to get away from him and search for Memphis, but where is the picture depicting Carol biting Angon? On top of that, the panels jump from action to action quickly.
Other than the reasons listed above, I love Ouke no Monshou's art, storyline, and characters. However, I do believe if the author would have taken more time to work on things like character developement, slowling down the storyline where it's needed, taking out that annoying unneeded dialog, minimize the reoccuring themes, and develope some backstories, I really believe Red River would have a fierce rival. It would definitely be a show down between Yuri (Red River) and Carol (Ouke no Monshou), two young girls sent back into ancient times who are mistaken for Goddesses. Despite the flaws that bother me so much, I have come to love Ouke no Monshou because it does have a certain charm about it that draws me to keep reading it.

The only thing I can say is that I came to this manga having just read Red River and well, in comparasion, it really quite sucks. It's like Red River, but almost a reversal. I have to say I liked the Hittite prince in this manga instead of the charming Menfuisu, and I rather think that the mangaka of Red River held my point of view and decided to write something similar but with characters who are much more agreeable, with the female lead who can actually live up to being called a goddess and a male lead who doesn't try to physically abuse every two panels... @Twelveball haha I do agree with you in every single point. I mean Carol to me is the part of being American that really annoys me... That our ideals should apply to everywhere else yada yada.

Is it just me or does raian (carol's brother) remind me of the reincarnation of izumin and jimi the reincarnation of sechi? I couldnt help but think of that...what do yah think confused Anyways this manga is awesome with great artwork.! And chapters 57 - 68 are missing so if anyone would know where to read them in english online, that would be splendid!

I laughed reading your post hahaha
I agree with you very much...but I can't stop reading cause I'm WAITING to see if anything new will happen even though it always ends up just repeating. Like..gambling! hahaha
I wish I could totally re-do this entire manga and make it 10x better than it is, but I'd probably get sued if i tried >:c

I've only read 14 volumes so far, and things get a little annoying^^
The story is repetitive, the characters don't seem to grow, and the arts ancient(much like that time period).
-The way the author draws blood, tears, & eyes is SO weird, yes?
- Carol been trying to run away from Memphis for what 5 times now?--> please someone help me keep count! again does anyone ever tell her that she needs to come up with a new plan after the first 4 times?
- Carol gets captured and or kidnapped for what three times now?--> does anyone have exact figures?
-Carol goes back and forth from home like twice--> this is bound to happen at least 5 more times, her family seriously needs to catch the pattern
-How many failed attempts at killing Carol has Memphis's creepy incestuous sis numbered? More than 3 and still counting?
-How many times is Carol going to believe she has American rights in Egypt--> ancient Egypt no less? I feel like screaming at her: GET WIT DA PROGRAM SHIT HEAD!! IF YOU OPEN YOUR EYES ABIT YOU SEE THAT THIS AINT AMERICA NO MORE FUCK IT AMERICA DOESN'T EVEN EXIST!!!
- she should stop trying to avoid being called a goddess--> I'm mean if people thought I was some god especially uneducated stupid people I'll roll with it.
-Despite all the story's issues I'm still reading it, but I'll probably die at the 20th volume or something. I see its similarities with Red River but Red River is sooooo much better I recommend it 1000+ times over this.
-Can anyone tell me if the pattern I detected repeats itself over the span of 36+ volumes?
@Thrudgelmir & Mangalover2000 I agree with you two sooo much, yet why do I keep reading this? naaaah I probably stop in the next 3 volumes or so (I really can't imagine anything new happening)

i thought that since this was rated so badly, it would suck!
but when i started reading it, it just totally grabbed me.
it resembles red river SOOO much! (and also has a few of the same plots).
i haven't finished the series yet....i mean, come on....55+ volumes....but definately something i would want to continue reading. smile
