Vampires exist. It is the duty of Hellsing, an organization sponsored by the British government, to hide that frightening fact and protect the blissfully unaware populace. Along with its own personal army, Hellsing also has a few secret weapons. Alucard, an incredibly powerful vampire, has been controlled by Hellsing for years. Although he dislikes being a servant to the Hellsing family, he certainly enjoys his job as Hellsing’s vampire exterminator. Seras is a fledgling vampire and a former police woman. Although reluctant to embrace her new self, she is still a valuable member of the organization. Integra Hellsing, the current leader, is usually fully capable of fulfilling her duty, but lately, vampire activity has been on the rise. Unfortunately, the cause is more alarming than anything she could have imagined. A group long thought dead has been plotting in secret since their apparent destruction over 50 years ago. Plotting to plunge England, and perhaps the entire world, into war.

If you like/don't mind excessive gore and some kickass action this is what you're looking for.
Theres manga with better art than this one, but at least to me the art helped creating that special atmosphere for the story that I am missing in other manga of the same genres.
The characters are all crazy and they remain crazy even after the mangaka started explaining about their different backgrounds.
The plot is there, and thats it.

Reading this summary i can't believe I just wrote about one of my all-time favourite mangas. smile
It might not seem much, but if you're looking for kickass gorey blood crazed action with vampires zombies nazis and werewolves, this manga can easily become one of your all time favourites as well.
And before I forget, since I usually don't believe in the genre tags:
Other than in the anime, there actually IS comedy in this manga like the genre tags imply.
The historical tag can be removed though since its way more fiction than fact.

10/10 because of the ending (light spoiler, won't mind if you're only looking for kickass in this manga)
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Alucard is still alive even though the whole plot revolves around people trying to kill him :D

Although at first sight hellsing comes off as a particularly gruesome manga that is out to show you that vampires are malicious monsters with their own sense of logic( that defies any form of justice) but when you stop to look and contemplate it, it forms a intriguing plot with complex characters. Hellsing has two levels that can appeal to many readers, as while containing various action scenes that capture the viewer it also takes time to observe characters actions and consider the possibility that in their own way each character has a sense of rightousness although it may disagree with others opinions (protagonists and antagonists alike).
Hellsing moves at a reasonable pace to explain itself as it goes, but fast enough to ensure something is constantly happening. It looks into many historical events and complicated ideas (from psycho nazi's to quantum physics to the original dracula and vlad III) and adapts them to create a brilliant story with stunning twists, complex personalities and an awesome sense of humour that leaves you hanging for more.

This is not a very drama based manga for sure, there is some mild development for Seres but if you've read past the first volume, you've obviously not stayed for drama.

The one sticking point of this manga is the high level of violence, gore and profanity in it. Not to say that it doesn't have some funny moments, but the part of the manga that struck me the most was the violence. Most, if not all the main characters are damned awesome fighters and show it often. Blood goes splurting everywhere and though this (like many mangas with fights) does have the tendency to drag the fights on for chapters, the overall structure of the plot allows and highlights this instead of making it repetitive.

It's kind of strange...Normally I hate dark manga and feel uncomfortable with ultra-gory stories, but I thought Hellsing was awesome. As someone who usually reads shoujo with a dash of shounen and avoid most seinen I have to say for some reason I liked Hellsing even though it belongs to a category of manga I normally avoid; I only read it because a friend recommended it. Somehow the unmitigated gore was put in a way I could stomach. I have no idea why but I was satisfied with the series. It was awesome despite the confusion; the manga wasn't meant to make absolute sense (at least to me). I think it was meant to show the confusion and uselessness of war and (I'm probably overthinking this) I felt a lot of symbolism for the past wars and how crazy and pointless they were and still are.

I really love Hellsing, one of my favourite series of all time. Love the maddness, mindless, mind-numbing violence that this series presents. Alucard is one of my fav characters of all time as well, just pure unadulterated evil that i never get tired of seeing. Wish it lasted longer, but everything good must come to an end.

Well, this is a pretty mature manga. Lots and lots of gore, almost depictions of child rape, plenty of profanity (scanlators did a good job maintaining cultural contexts too), and all the characters (and the author, sometimes) seem to be on some form of crack or another. However, Hirano does give the characters (especially Alucard) a lot of depth once you look past the ultraviolence and stupid joke chapters. Once you read past the story arcs that were shared with the anime, the story starts to get pretty damn insane, so be prepared. That's not to say it was particularly rich - although the characters definitely make this manga stand out, the plot is sometimes weak and even nonsensical, causing the reader to lose sight of the main conflict. Another note: the manga ended recently, and all of the characters receive some form of closure unlike in the anime.

As for the art, it's just mediocre in the beginning but Hirano hugely improved his style as the manga went on. From the London war arc on the art is just superb and intricately detailed.

I agree with the comment below, imo it was quite a boring manga but still worth reading, I watched the anime long time ago and I highly recommend that one instead, but if you want a good read with much blood and gore I'd suggest you to read mangas like Berserk, Gantz, Claymore and Kiseijuu before reading this... ;( or maybe you should read this before reading them and you won't get dissapointed like I was xD

its a good manga...but not great, people made it sound like it was legendary. but it wasn't. just alot of blood and gore non-stop and that was it. the plot was lacking development and it felt like people where fighting to no reasons sometime....

but the fighting was great. it was the only thing that made me keep reading...if you like blood and just fighting with alot of dark themes, you will LOVE this manga...but for me it was ok.

Well, finally this manga has ended and I just have read the last chapter. And so the review is...

-The artwork is very good and usually detailed (overall, not in every scene). By the same token many scenes are simply bloody and gory.

-Plot: probably the greatest weakness and the reason I am rating 9 and not more this manga. Frankly the plot is weak, although there were hints of something big or mysterious... well, there is nothing of the sort for making it a great plot. The good side of the plot is that the three factions (Hellsing/church/major's army) are totally demential, giving a suspenseful atmosphere. And there are a couple of twists that will make you say 'whhhaaattttt?!?!?!' (the betrayal and how to kill an invincible monster). Another good point is that the plot does not seems to be extended artificially by adding 'brand new and disposable' enemies or sub-plots useless to the main plot.

-Characters. Definitely the most outstanding part in this manga. Characters are extremely cool, funny and definitely memorable. This is of the few mangas where even the secondary characters are as enjoyable and memorable as the main ones.

So overall this is a great manga with lovely characters, given you are fine with bloody/gore scenes.
