Makunochi Ippo is an ordinary high school student in Japan. Since he spends most of his time away from school helping his mother run the family business, he doesn't get to enjoy his younger years like most teenagers. Always a target for bullying at school, Ippo's life is one of hardship. One of these after-school bullying sessions turns Ippo's life around for the better, as he is saved by a boxer named Takamura. He decides to follow in Takamura's footsteps and train to become a boxer, giving his life direction and purpose. Ippo's path to perfecting his pugilistic prowess is just beginning.

but I love this manga! As a matter of fact after becoming addicted to this I looked on hbo to check out boxing. Come to find out I really enjoyed it, and this series helped me to understand this sport as well. I eagerly await more releases.

Are you new to the series? Good for you, this is a great sports manga. It's all about the typical "hard work beats talent" but it's fun nowadays.

Problem is that the author has no sense of pacing, the last fights drag on FOREVER and it's a real pain to follow it weekly. Main character is not evolving and the sense of humor is missing in action.

In the end, you are going to get addicted to it if you start from fresh, but when you'll get to the weekly episodes it would turn in a nightmare.

This, is my favorite manga. The fights, the humor, the awesomeness, all of it. I cannot think of anything, I would add or change to this manga. Seriously. To those of you who have said Ippo hasn't changed or grown at all, seriously? Are you insane? The kid who couldn't socialize with anyone, and was a total wimp, who now can talk with girls, kicks more ass then Popeye? If you missed the chapters
Spoiler (highlight to view)
Where Ippo confessed to Kumi, but she had fallen asleep, please go back and read those and tell me he didn't change.

Go read this its worth every second.

Ok first off this manga owns all. I just totally love Ippo. Even tho he is like kinda weak minded. I mean im a fan of Sports manga, and this isnt even just for men. Im sure Morikawa has tons of girl fans too. Like me hehe. Im just kinda fed up with Ippos and Kumi's relationship, haha leave it to a girl to mention that, but ugh just say it already!!

Thing most i look forward to if it ever happens is a match between Ricardo and Ippo.

well, ppl said it, one of the best in sport manga, i dont rank best second to best etc, if i really like one it joins the rank "of the best" bigrazz
oh and guys.... dont compare it to berserk and one piece.... seriously, different kind of manga, it like comparing soccer player to a baseball player......
but im sure i will be pissed as hell when this manga reaches an end... there will be tears to be shed and blood to be spilled..... i said nothing >_>

Even though I'm not much of a sports/boxing fan, I've really enjoyed Hajime no Ippo. If the story gets repetitive some of the time, it always seems to be going somewhere and it's always entertaining. Plus, the relationship between the men in the boxing gym absolutely cracks me up. It's full of crude, idiotic, "guy" humor.

My favorite thing about this manga has been watching the art develop. After a few volumes, the artist really finds his style, and the panels become incredibly dynamic and visually striking. Though there are a lot of differences, the way the artist depicts motion reminds me of American Silver Age comics. Even with panel after panel of two boxers slugging it out in a ring, your eye always stays fed.

Ippo's latest fight with that magician guy (ch780) is just stupid. It doesn't even resemble boxing anymore. The mangaka just need to cut it out with all the weird illusions, tricks and voodoo crap. He's trying too hard, and the result is not cool and mysterious, just irritating. Go back to the way boxing is suppose to be. I'd rather see another monotonous "slugfest" than one more match filled with these petty mind games and psychological deception. It's just too stupid.

By the way, this is one hell of a manga. Don't look down on it because of my earlier comment. I just wanted to rant on that one particular match. There are many many other impressive matches throughout this manga. Hence the 10/10 rating...

Very good but repetitive slow moving and annoying at times. Ippo is the least impressive main character you will ever encounter and I'd rather the author showcase a will of steel and blazing confidence than a weak minded doormat but thats just me.

One of the best series I've ever read. I only gave it a 9 because there's too much focus on Miyata and Itagaki nowadays and I'm quite sick of reading about how wonderful they are when there are far more interesting characters out there. Either rename the series Hajime no Miyatagaki or give me a break!
