Shiratori Ryuji wants to become a picture book writer, and he moves to an apartment, Narutaki-So, in order to go to an art school in Tokyo. The Narutaki-so is an old Japanese style one-story house which doesn’t fit in with the urban scenery. It's owned by the cousin of his mother, but the manager of the apartment is Aoba Kozue. She is his second cousin, and they met with each other when they were children although he doesn’t remember her much. She is in the second year of a high school attached to Aoba Junior Collage.

There are five people living in Narutaki-So. First, Chanohata Kotomi is living in the room #1. She is a best friend of Kozue. Then, the resident of the room #3 is Momono Megumi. She is a kind of person who goes her own way. In the room #5, Kurosaki Sayoko and her daughter Asami are living. Asami is in the first year of a junior high. Finally, in the room #6, Haibara Yukio is living with his puppet, “Johnny”.

They are all characteristic and eccentric people. However, in fact, the most eccentric person is Kozue. She has a secret; when she is shocked at something, she changes her personality. Not knowing this, Shiratori moves to Narutaki-So to realize his dream. What kind of a new life will be waiting for him?

Just started reading this. I wasn't too into it at first, it seemed a little boring and too simple, with no character depth. I dragged through the first chapter or 2, until it reveals that she has MPD. After that the characters become more interesting and I'm getting more into it.

I did not think that Mahoraba was something special in the first few volumes, even if I was enough entertained to keep reading. However, the story became more and more interesting and the last ~3 volumes were awesome. And for once, the ending was perfect! smile

The art isn't great but there's a LOT of feelings in the drawings, which really helps you getting emotionally involved. Highly recommended if you'd like some light-hearted romantic comedy with some dramatic undertones.

A great read thats definitely worth your time. Lots of interesting points to consider, lacked a little on emotional settings but did a fantastic job of really getting the story out.

Definitely one of my favourites, I may read it again when I inevitable forget it do to my crap memory, but its an awesome read. From beginning to end I found it enjoyable, and you really end up liking all the characters. I especially like how EVERYONE got a happy ending, instead of just the main pair, some just romances leave off when the main pair gets a happy ending, but knowing everyone else ends up ok really gave it a nice finish.

Just finished Mahoraba vol 12 and so the story ends. Must say that this is one of the best Romance/Comedy Mangas i have ever read. From the start and until the end it fills the heart with happy feelings. An ending cant get much better than this.

I was a little skeptical of this at first for some reason. It didn't suck me in immediately, but by the time I was finished I found it to be a great read.

At first, I thought a little bit more could have been done with the MPD aspect of the story, but then again I can also see some potential pitfalls of putting too much focus on it, so I'm happy enough as it is.

Filled with unique and likable characters who are all nicely developed by the end. It's really quite funny and light most of the time, but there are enough well placed deep and poignant parts to make it a very affecting story overall, without beating you over the head with a lot of melodrama.

Anime is good, but doesn't do justice to the manga's depth. The characters in the manga mature fantastically, and the build-up to the end is great too. I'd like to see more works from Kojima Akira.

I just finished reading this, and all that I can say is that it was a great story. It had one of the best endings I've read. The story didn't feel rushed, and the ending explained all of the characters stories really well. It's a nice light hearted story, that makes you feel satisfied after reading it. I love it so much that I give it a ten.

I have really given up about seeing the ending someday. One of the funniest and the romance not so bad, greatly recommended to those who like comedy and cute moments.

It was a long wait to get these final few chapters, but it was well worth it for Mahoraba is one of the very best manga I've ever read.

I think what I like most about it is it's depth. It's deceptively simple at first, with what seems like cardboard characters that you've seen a hundred times before. But the more you read it, the more you realize just how unique and interesting all the characters are. And not just the main players either; a tremendous amount of care is given to all the secondary characters as well, making them all the more human, and giving you a real attachment to each and every one of them.

The story itself may seem pure slice-of-life, and in many ways it is, but there are also common themes running throughout all the volumes, as well as one central thread that runs over the course of the entire series. It's wonderfully written, and at times funny, sad, heartwarming, charming, and quite poignant.

The artwork is not super-detailed, and there are no buxom beauties or muscle-bound supermen, but it's beautifully simple, with a fantastic style that perfectly complements the story and really helps support the narrative.

And to top it off, it's got one of the best endings I've ever read in a manga. It doesn't cheat the reader, nor take a sudden u-turn away from everything that the story has built up until this point, but instead serves to put a final stamp on everything that has come before it. Other mangaka should take notes - this is how an ending should be.

If you've seen the anime, you owe it to yourself to read this. The tv adaptation, while decent enough in it's own right, only serves to scratch the surface of everything the manga has to offer. For everyone else, if you're looking for something a little bit different, with a unique sense of humor, well done, but not overly heavy drama, beautifully crafted romance, and some of the best character designs ever, check out Mahoraba. It's slow going, but stick with it and you'll soon discover it's quite simply one of the best manga out there.

In all the reviews I've done, this is the first time I've given any series a 10. I reserve this rating for only the very best of the best, those that are truly something special. Most don't deserve it.

This one does.
