You know manga is good when the plot is so good you don't care about crappy art. I have much to say about this manga and anime I don't even know where to begin. The first time I read this my thought were "Could it be... that this is better than Berserk? Better than Dragon head?" Even though I knew this can't be compared with any manga simply because it's so original. So far I've fallen in love with every character and the story. Like I said I have so much to say and so little time so I'm just going to bomb you with pluses and minuses.

+ Definitely the plot, story teling and its logic
+ Character growth
+ Moral lessons and life lessons;
How to be strong and idependent (making choises and trusting others) etc.
- The art, seriously sometimes I can't tell them characters apart

I give this 9/10 right now. I can't really rate an ongoing manga but I can always update it.

Despair: The Manga

Generally, every arc begins with the heroes having some great plan to fight back against the Titans, only for all the talk of the strength and determination of humanity to come crumbling apart when a Titan appears. Characters are introduced, you learn about their stories and see their little quirks, and then they die horrible, meaningless deaths.

There are very long stroy arcs where the heroes fight a constant battle of attrition against the Titans, only to have any accomplishments they won soon erased in the next arc, and arcs focusing solely on character development are few and far between, so whenever someone does bite the dust, you don't really know much about them aside from how well they fought, and their death doesn't have as much impact as it should have. In the end, half of the characters in this story are expendable extras, and that is the biggest disappointment.

HitlerJugend vs. meatsack cannibals... and then superpowers and change of directions between arcs. ARRRGH.

Like Vinland Saga, WTF-grade arc changes... unlike Vinland Saga, never had a good arc to begin with, just "seemed promising" somehow.

Author took the lot of us for a ride on that seeming promise. The smarter ones bailed out by now. Annoying artstyle anyway.

I just marathoned the manga up to chapter 40 whatever. I wish I had the foresight to drop out when that other reviewer did at volume 3. He was dead on.

After the boring training arc, we have a really long chase sequence in the forest which spans several volumes and ends inconclusively, and from there on the series falls apart. Left-field intrigue, delays, and just ridicolous stuff. All the fights have become godzilla WWF matches now....

I don't even want to waste my time thinking about or satiring this crap. I want to purge my memory of what I read in the last volume. It was awful and I'm quitting.

If you must read this series, stop at the end of the training arc. But do not expect any answers to the mysteries the author has built--he didn't make them with any answers in mind, and is just scrambling to make up answers as he goes along anyway.

The last half of the series has been so awful, and the 10./10 ratings so idiotic I must give this a 3 to balance things out. Maybe a 5 would be more honest, but I'm still too pissed at the writer for drawing out a series he didn't know where to go with... He wasted half a day with this crap. Throw a dart at any shounen and you have a 50-50 chance of getting a better read.

I have read this manga up to chapter 42... and I just can't get tired of it. It is raw, it is gory, it has a different pace, the art is unusual, the characters aren't likeable, and that's what makes it good.
If you like prepacked manga, this manga isn't for you. But if you like manga where you can only try to guess where the plot is going (and you don't mind people still screaming while they are half eaten), this manga is for you.
If you decide to read it, do it slowly; it takes some time to digest all the information given.

When I first started this manga I thought it would be decent. I was wrong, this manga turned out to be so much more than that. It is still very early in the series but it leaves you wanting more to read with every chapter. The feelings of desperation and urgency are ever present and keep you on the edge of your seat and the fact that things never go according to plan give you a sense of realism. This is a must read!!!

i love the plot and the action scenes, but i never really felt connected to any of the characters, they all have interesting back stories, but none of them really got enough screen time for me to care about them

I just want to say that you gotta take this has little hints all over allowing you to know what's going on if you put your mind to it.

I especially love how other than the existence of giants, everything else is perfectly realistic. The exploration of how the impossibility could be overcome is an intriguing read. The development of weapons(more or less detail design! no fantastical blackbox) and realistic tactics to fight against them in the open.

Contrary to what some feel, I do not think the flashbacks are fillers. They serve to understand how can a soldier be trained to battle against giants and to use the specially designed weapons effectively. They also add depth to characters mental makeup and how their perceptions change(or remain unchanged).

This is dark like berserk but unlike it, you can actually ask "why are giants eating humans?". This is non-sensical question in the frame of berserk world. Not so here. You can question and your answers will probably be given: just like in the real world. I hope it can maintain it's realism without resorting to hocus pocus plot elements.

I like how this manga doesn't show a happily ever after for everyone. Though some of the ones who died are minor characters, but it proves that the life of being constantly haunted by those giants is real and terrifying. With the deaths of the other characters, it makes me able to better understand what the other characters in the story felt with the deaths of their friends. This makes the story feels real.

i must first that this series dont really take to me. it feel disjointed, the pacing is wrong, the characters uninteresting, the anatomy is out of porpotion, the emotions dont get through, and some of the things here is illogical. however, it still very much interesting and the plot itself can carry this series forward and make you feel breathless for more.
