Description

Title comes from French poet Beaudelaire's compilation of poems, Les Fleurs du mal.

This is going to be more of a review and my analysis then a comment.

The story starts off as if Se-Wa is the crazy one in love with her brother, when actually it's really her brother, Se-Joon, who is obsessed.

We find out that his obsessive love started when they were children, when Se-Wa was seperated from Se-Joon for the first time because of her heart transplant. It was then that he realized how much he loved. So, he kept her isolated from everyone by spreading rumors about her and doesn't help her when she's bullied because he wants her to feel like she only has him by her side, which he does so successfully.

Se-Wa becomes totally dependent on her brother's love, since she has no one else. She grows attached to him and constantly seeks his love. In a sense, Se-Joon completed what he desired, which was to have Se-Wa's affections just for himself. However, his guilt and his fears of what the world thinks of his love for his sister causes him to push her away as if her affections for him are the cause of his misery. He puts all the blame on his sister, as if she's the one obsessed with him, as if her love for him is suffocating him.

Se-Wa eventually tries to move on from her brother. She finally makes friends with Gi-Hoon, and slowly she falls in love, for the first time, with him. We learn that her love for Se-Joon is nothing more than a child's attachment, seeking for love. However, she doesn't refuse her brother when he tries to sleep with her because she was still confused over her feelings for her brother and what they meant. When she sees Gi-Hoon for the first time after sleeping with her brother, she realizes the difference and her feelings for Gi-Hoon that were developing.

After seeing Se-Wa grow apart from him, Se-Joon realizes what he has done. He becomes possessive again, and starts hurting people who has tried to "dirty" or hurt his sister. As she grows farther and farther away, his desires grow that he even starts to hate his sister and wants to kill her.

Gi-Hoon, who initially wanted revenge, falls in love with Se-Wa, who has his younger sister's heart, which was stolen because of Se-Wa's father. Gi-Hoon soon finds out that Se-Joon slept with Se-Wa. Se-Joon panics and continuously beats Gi-Hoon unconscious with a rock. Thinking that he had killed Gi-Hoon, Se-Joon runs away, bringing Se-Wa with him.

Since Se-Wa’s heart isn’t really her own, she constantly has to take her pills. However, because of Se-Joon’s selfishness and fears for himself. He actually neglects this fact, and Se-Wa’s heart condition worsens and eventually dies.

Gi-Hoon blames Se-Joon, and Se-Joon knows that it was his own fault. He goes to find Se-Wa’s cell phone and gives it to Gi-Hoon, saying that the phone belongs to Gi-Hoon. Gi-Hoon reads Se-Wa’s message to him and cries. I have no idea what it says exactly, since it isn’t translated, but it’s probably “I love you” or something. Se-Joon believing that he can’t live without Se-Wa, commits suicide.

In the end, I think the father got back what he deserved and loss both of his children even though he sacrificed Gi-Hoon’s sister to save Se-Wa.

Also, I'll like to comment on how the story began and ended with the story about the boy who everyone loved and whether you would choose to be loved by everyone or just one person. The boy was like Se-Joon, but even though he said at the end of the manga that he rather by loved by one, his action throughout the manga was contradictory, since he was so afraid of exposing his incestuous relationship, afraid of what "everyone" would have thought. So, to me he choose to be loved by "everyone."

stunning and distressing viewpoint on sibling relationships

Probably one of the more beautiful manga/manwhas I've encountered, definitely the only one to make me tear up. This was my first time reading a story of its kind (incest) and I think it did a good job of displaying the obsessive love the siblings have for one another while still making that love ambiguous. Is it really love, or is it just familial closeness being mistranslated? There are a lot of plot twists that I would NEVER have seen coming, and I was very thankful for the surprises. Shoujo is usually extremely predictable.

The characters were well-defined with personalities that varied vastly from one to the other. The mangaka did a good job of showing how character relationships impacted not only parties involved, but also friends and family and others close by. Every pang of guilt, fear, or physical pain felt by the characters was real and visceral. The technical delivery was stunning (in particular, a scene where the twins' father hangs his head and clutches his glasses stands out) and the art, while often falling flat and becoming nonexpressive, was pretty good as well. Motives were clear, and nothing was confusing about the plot at all. After every reveal I understood exactly what was going on. The only thing that we aren't sure about is

Seh-wa's real feelings. It's never explained whether she is in love with her brother or if it's just platonic love being misinterpreted.

I feel like the ending could have been handled better--specifically,

Seh-wa's death felt jarring and the emotions of the parents, Seh-jun, and Jung were not touched on nearly enough --but I'm ultimately satisfied with it.

This is really a stunning manga overall, but it is far from a light read and it will push the boundaries of what you're comfortable with, particularly if you have opposite sex siblings. It's not explicit but it can be rather uncomfortable in its lewdest moments. There are a lot of interesting motifs as well, such as Seh-jun's religiousness and

Seh-wa's heart pains being misinterpreted as "twin telepathy." It also contains a good amount of symbols--Seh-jun's rosary/cross necklace, the twins' framed picture, and near the end, Seh-waand Jung's cell phones. I also found it interesting that Seh-jun being religious and Jung being atheist were deliberately stated early on, and I feel like this was a purposeful move on the mangaka's part to draw attention to the dichotomy and irony of the situation. ! Seh-jun, the religious party, eventually has sex with his sister, tries to kill Jung, and then commits suicide, whereas Jung is tempted to "sin" but holds himself back many times. However, I could just be looking a bit too far into it.

I highly recommend this manwha if not because you want a realistic (albeit dramatic) story about a romantic relationship between twins then because you should explore these types of situations that can make people uncomfortable. Unsettling, haunting, and beautifully ironic are just some of the words that can be used to describe Flowers of Evil.

If you are a fan of tragedy, READ THIS

The Elements of the story
This is the ultimate star crossed lovers story. Mix a boy with a mysterious past with one slightly crazy/very possessive twin, and a love that can never be, and you get a recipe for tragedy, a.k.a. Flowers of Evil. All tragedy fans must read this.

Dealing With Incest
If you can stand incest, that is. But before you immediately say "oh, incest is sickening, there's no way I can read this," let me tell you that the characters do not try to defend incest, but instead are pulled into this moral battle within themselves (especially the brother-the sister, I think, is less bothered by it. But then again, she seems to be less bothered by everything). The way they deal with their feelings for each other is very believable, and the mangaka certainly is not saying incest is a good thing. If anything, this story says just the opposite.

The Characters
The characters are all really interesting and believable.
Seh-Wa:
The slightly off-kilter sister. She's interesting to try to figure out. At first I found her to be annoying, but as the manga progressed I began to like her and understand her more and more.
Seh-Joon:
Seh-Wa's seemingly normal twin brother. He is a very likeable character, and you feel bad for him and how he has to deal with his sister's feelings. But as the series progresses, you also come to understand him more, and you realize he is much less two-dimensional than you originally thought. He undergoes some great character development.
The Supporting Characters:
Seh-Joon's girlfriend is one of the supporting characters. She is pretty much the same person the whole time, but she's not evil. She's just not as interesting. Also supporting, is the twins' childhood friend who becomes good friends with Seh-Wa. He has his own motivations and interesting past that play a part in this story, and he ends up being a lot more important to the plot than you originally thought.

The Plot
Another great aspect of this manga is that about half-way through, the plot seems to flip over and you find yourself forced to re-evaluate the entire situation. Once I got through the first several chapters (which were a little predictable), this story kept surprising me, and my opinions of the characters kept changing. Once you've started this manga, you will be compelled to keep reading.

The Ending
Also, when reading this, keep in mind how the very first chapter begins because it all ties back to that in the end (which I think is just beautiful storytelling).

Even without that, though, the end of the story was simply perfect. It could not have been better for this manga.

In Conclusion
So the storyline becomes interesting, there's some great character development, and of course the art is just beautiful. If you like tragedies, and can stomach incest, you must read this. If you can't, then avoid this story like the plague. Because if you read it, it will haunt you . . .

Good emotional depth

Very dark, angsty series - which I love. It's not for those who are uncomfortable with incest because this manga takes it to a serious and thoughtful level. I think the mangaka thought out the scenes with plenty of foreshadowing, and I appreciate it. Reactions that make little sense or seem off in the beginning make perfect sense near the end. Manga is all about the angst and emotional drama. Just enjoy the ride.

Seh-wah did not romantically love Seh-joon. She was codependent on him. He isolated her on purpose, and he admits it. She was scared of being alone, and she was mentally unstable + emotionally stunted, resulting in her crazy obsession with her brother. She breaks out of this at the end when someone finally befriends her. Seh-joon, on the other hand, loved Seh-wah, and he knew that her crazy tantrums didn't mean that she romantically loved him. That's why he broke down on her and asked her if she knew what love really meant. He fought with himself the entire series. He loved her. He wanted to take her crazy obsession with him at face value but knew she did not actually feel the same way. He was deathly scared of condemnation from others. Seh-joon did NOT struggle with his own morals with concern to his love. He struggled with how other people would see it and the consequences for it. He was scared of what people would do if they found out. He was scared that God would punish him. Hence the frequent focus on his reactions when someone almost finds out something.

Let me talk about this story while the wound is still fresh. Wow~

Art—gorgeous. What's with all these beautiful manhwas? I've yet to find a badly drawn one. Anyway, the character designs are great. Their expressions seem heart-felt and real. Argh, I can't talk about the art right now when my mind is going crazy over the story, which I just finished.

Now, for the long awaited story review. My main thought is "Wow." I have been dazzled. At first the story was somewhat light-hearted and, overall, gave the feeling of "numb". There were some cute, humorous moments and some parts that gave me the butterflies because it was so romantic—BUT. As the plot progresses, a dark, mature theme slides in. So many moments were very chilly and, indeed, gave me the shivers. It's a dark, tantalizing story, so don't be fooled by the light hearted start. Anyway, the ending and anything around the vicinity of the ending just made me go overboard. It was just so... So...—

Hehe, okay, now to the characters. I truly admire this author in some sort morbid admiration due to this story. The characters are just like the story—"Wow". The twins are truly, absolutely insane. Haha, you'll find out how and why upon reading the story. It's what makes the story just so morbidly juicy. They're utterly unpredictable and I sense some changes in personality later on. It's just crazy. Seriously, just read it.

Blah, overall, thumbs up for the originality. You cannot miss this story...

Don't believe silent . While most of it it's true he portrayed the brother as the evil one. She loved him and it was real love, otherwise she wouldn't do what she did with him and in the end she chose her brother and sent a goodbye message to Gi-Hoon and thanking him for taking care of her when she was lonely.

I love the whole dark aura that emanates from the manga..with the beautifuly sinful art is just amazaning and entrilling at the same time..loving every page of it! I got hold of the raws and now Im even more addicted to it...how will the story end..I bet in tragety

I really liked this manga , i love mangas were the love between a couple is forbidden !
Se-wah lovers Se-joon and i think he feels the same but he knows it's wrong . Even if they are siblings hope they " manage " to be together .

Dark, tragic and sad but slightly over dramatic

First off, i just want to say that the art is beautiful. :3

The story, revolves around the forbidden love between a pair of twins. Except its not that simple. Afterall, there's a reason why this is categorized under psychological. Both of the twins are unstable, twisted and cause demise for those who get too far involved with them. I'm not a fan of incest, and tend to stay away from the category..but in this story, i think it works.

In this manhwa, the emotions are very raw. You can feel Sejun being tormented by his feelings, and how much he really loves Sewa right off the pages. This is probably the best thing about the manhwa and what makes it popular- how well how author conveyed realistic emotions-

Although the characters do things that appear unlikable, i found their actions to be realistic in terms of what people would react/feel like if these story of events were to happen in real life. It goes through the struggles of loving someone you can't have.

This is a dark, emotional, psychologically woven tale with some twisted characters. As you read further, the characters true personalities are developed. For example, Se-wa, initially presented as the crazy one, turns out to be much normal as she progresses. On the otherhand, Sejoon, seemingly stable at first turns out to be the truly crazy one. The story progresses well, and the deeper you read into, the darker and better it gets with some good twists. The mystery surrounding the plot/characters is what kept me reading- i was so curious to find out more about these characters full of secrets.

Unfortunately, there ONE aspect that took away from the overall essence and impact of the manhwa. The artwork and emotions were strong. But there was a lot of overdramatic devices and scenes used, in which i felt like i was watching some lame korean drama. It was like she used the basic formula of a drama and then decorated it with some psycho incest twins. If this was fixed then i would have given it at least at 8..

Anyways, this is a pretty good read if you don't mind incest. It gets you hooked and once you get into the story, you keep wanting to find out more. The art is lovely imo, and the emotions are very strong.

Strangely addictive

I'm not usually into the dark and depressing type manhwas, but I decided to give this a try (the art is very nice 😛 ). I got completely invested in the story; it's so twisted but at the same time I could not stop reading. The whole focus of the story is Se-wa's obsession and manipulation on her brother. The extent of her love for her brother is borderline psychotic.

Definetly a decent story- if you're tired of reading typical light-hearted type stories, I recommend you give this a read.
