Kimi Ni Todoke is about a shy girl who becomes even more introvert after people keep calling her Sadako, named after the girl from The Ring, the horror movie.
Because of this, Sawako can't seem to make any friends, plus she's incredibly shy (and awkward) as well. She admires the guy sitting next to her in class, who's the complete opposite of her; he's charming and has a lot of friends, always laughing and talking to people. Kazehaya however, becomes the first person to talk to her and remember her real name (Sawako, not Sadako). It's pretty obvious that they're gonna end up together.
Only the way it takes for them to end up together is extremely annoying. It is in Sawako's nature to misunderstand anything being said to her, and to apologize frequently for her (non)actions. This manga runs on misunderstandings. In fact, the biggest and most stupid misunderstanding was:
When Kazehaya tried to confess to her that he liked her, but she misunderstands and thinks he only meant as a friend. She tried to say the same as well, that she likes him - but he also misunderstands and thinks she meant 'as a friend'.
That was the dumbest plot twist ever, it made me yell out loud, and angry that the mangaka thought this was clever and funny. No it wasn't, it was highly annoying!
You'd think that a slice of life manga like this would feature character development, to turn the shy and innocent, and very naive girl into a more confident and outspoken girl, who likes herself at the end. No such thing happens, it's why it's not even one of the categories here on MangaUpdates. That's what really annoyed me about the series. Sure Sawako ends up with friends, but only through the actions of someone else, but not through her own actions. She never does anything, she stays the same girl in the beginning as in the end, only with more friends and a crush. She doesn't change, and that truly annoys me to see her still getting into misunderstandings so late in the manga. Same goes for her love interest Kazehaya, who seems to stay the same as well, only paying more attention to Sawako.
In fact, I didn't like both of these characters. Sawako is dense, really stupid and very naive. Kazehaya seems charming, but he hasn't got much going for him either.
I find it hilarious that another reviewer said this manga has a unique storyline and realistic situations. Really? What storyline is that? It's about how a girl and boy can get into countless of misunderstandings before they finally get together, nothing unique about it. Also, realistic? Have you read inside the spoiler up there? What the heck is so realistic about that? It was so unrealistic it made me stop reading. I understand many people love this manga to bits, but they shouldn't pretend this is unique or realistic. There's nothing realistic about Sawako's character.
If you're like me and hate shy girls who will never ever change and get into countless of misunderstandings because she's so naive it hurts - I definitely don't recommend this manga. If you love shoujo in general, sure go ahead and read it, you'll probably love it.
Unfortunately, I didn't.
