Description

Mari is a shy, studious girl who has neither a boyfriend nor any friends. One day, Akiko - one of the most fashion-conscious and sociable girls in the class - strikes up a conversation with her out of the blue! As the days go by the two become inseparable, with Akiko often cheerily remarking on how they became best friends so easily. Mari has a lot of fun with Akiko and her group, slowly becoming more outgoing despite still being timid and awkward. But she knows, deep down inside, that she doesn't want them to stay just friends forever...

What I really find enjoyable about this Yuri (girls-love) series is that unlike a great bulk of yuri series where one of the female protagonist is somewhat more "domineering" (be it more masculine traits like Sumika in "Sasamekikoto" or greater social standing and qualities like Shizuma in "Strawberry Panic"), in "Girl Friends", both protagonists are the very commonplace high school girl that you can find almost anywhere. Yes, if you stretch it, "Akko" has a more proactive personality and Mari is more reserved and timid, but both of them are not too "out of this world" characters, and this fact makes it easier for the reader to associate with their love story. Sometimes, being able to build familiarity with the reader via a somewhat more believable tale is also very important in story-telling. And Morinaga-sensei excels in doing this.

Girl Friends was a surprise.
When I started reading it I expected to like it, however I did not expect to read it as quickly as I did; and I certainly did not expect to be waiting so eagerly for the next chapter.
Girl Friends isn't a common yuri manga.
It's story is very realistic and the feelings of the characters develop slowly and step by step, not rushing events and confrontations. I feel that it shows the way the feelings of the protagonists grow and also the way they struggle against this not socially accepted love .
A great manga, up until now, that strongly recommend! ^.^

Morinaga strikes again, with her dangerously cute characters and yuri/self-discovery dramatics. This is a great story with well-developed characters and a simple, yet addictive drama-filled plot. Morinaga does an excellent job portraying both sides of a blooming relationship between two girls -- best friends -- one of whom realizes her feelings for her best friend may be more than just those of a friend, and the other who is completely oblivious, and later, unsure how to cope with the sudden realization of her friend's feelings toward her. The story is told via narrative from both sides, which does a superb job of conveying both girls' feelings, expectations and fears.

I like this enough that I really can't find anything to criticize -- it's a cute story well worth your time.

Not being a huge Yuri fan, I decided to give this a try with a recommendation, and now I am quite glad I did. Its rare to find a yuri or even a shoujo-ai with this type of realism to it, which on the plus side dosent make it seem overly melodramatic. It was quite interesting reading about the blooming feelings the best friends have for each other and the struggles they go through in order to hide it.

i suprisingly liked it! Im a girl, and a YAOI ADDICT! i treid reading yuri through impulse and this is my first one. Thou the story slow, its still worth it because you can see their relationship slowly growing into love from knowing each other and becoming bestfriends and eventually fell in-love with each other. 🙂 ))))

MUST READ! TRUST ME IT's WORTH IT, you can even get some beauty tips. haha.

my first shoujo ai

After reading this a while back I tried more of the shoujo ai/yuri genre.... nothing could compete with it. I was hoping a majority of the titles would be similar, but they are all fanservice with no substance, Sweetness with no depth, or drama with no real sweetness....

there are very few romances I have read in any genre that match up with the pure sweetness you will find in this story. The art is quite good and really adds to the experience, and while the plot doesn't add much other than a slow yuri relationship, I think that is all this needs to be great. My only disappointment was that

they never came out to friends/family.... I'm happy that are apparently together during college, but I really wish the plot could have finished . Anyway this manga is an extremely good read, but make sure to read a few romances before this so you don't set the bar too high to ever enjoy a romance manga again 😛 .

Art: 9.5(looks great and adds a lot of feeling)
Character Development: 10(absolutely perfect slow romance char development)
Comedy: 9(based on the fact it isn't a comedy manga, the comedy was above average)
Ending: 9(would have liked to see more resolution)
Overall: 9.5...... ok actually I may have been too hard on the ending, and the sweet romance more than makes up for it....... wth, 10

Although I'm not a fan of this genre, I just decided to read some light GL and GOSH! this one had me in tears at time. The build-up is so cute and emotional when it came to confession.

This is my first yuri manga, it's also one of the best manga i've read, the story and characters, all are very good, but the most exceptional is the Art, you'll be fighting the cuteness XD

This manga was so cute! I thought the main story was absolutely amazing. It was really nice how the main characters relationship grows even while they to change and grow. Even the other characters were done really well with out taking away from the main characters too much, truly a perfect blend. The artwork was absolutely perfect, everything was drawn well and the full color pages at the beginning of chapters were so pretty. I just couldn't get over how damn cute the main characters were. I really don't know what else to say. Such a cute, wonderful yuri. 10 across the board ...

My first Yuri

This was my first in the genre and since then I've been searching for other stories that come close to how interesting this story was. It begins as a lighthearted story of two friends who grow to love each other for specific REASONS. Many romance plots I've seen fail to give actual substance to the relationship. But here you can easily see why they become attracted to each other. The development can be a bit tiring but you always stick with it to make sure you see the proper result at the end. This is definitely a series that should not be overlooked, even if you typically avoid shoujo-ai (I did) this one can't be passed up for the sheer art, comedy, insight, and of course a love story in it's purest form.
