21 Volumes (Complete)

This review will be updated as I get further into the series; at this point in time, I've only read what has been scanlated. I'll update this as Del Rey releases more volumes, though.
PLOT
EXTREMELY original. While it is also quite morbid, it is not overdone. (Translation: There is some carnage, but it's nothing like guts strewn over a two-page layout or anything.) It's fast-paced and twisting as well, so it's difficult to get bored of it even though the basic concept seems like it could be overdone. However, as it progresses, the plot does get a bit less original, but the way each plotline is strung out helps reduce the obviousness of this change.
CHARACTERS
Each character is nicely done, and there are no outstanding character clichés. I must give extra props to Kawashima for not over-doing the entire "ZOMG MY PAST WAS SO ANGST-RIDDEN1!11" cliché, for many authors find it difficult to not include such an event into a character's past. But, overall, each character has a rather simple backstory (can be either good or bad, whichever way you want to see it) and has engaging personality traits. They also come together to create humorous situations, which is always a plus.
ART
This is the only category I can really penalize the series on, and most of it is only personal preference. The only solid case against the artwork is that some of the details look shoddily done, and some features can be over-sized or under-sized depending on the panel (example: Yoko's lip size/lipstick, nose placement/size, etc). However, this only applies to the first volume in the series; the art gets much better as you get further into the story. So, in the end, it isn't a huge drawback as long as you can stick it out through the first few chapters.
I think what really got me was how surprising it was. A manga about suicide really works for me
If you understand the fear of eternity, and how natural evolution of a species may end, you will consider the idea of the story much more than "okay".If you know why the comrades were grant power, and about the holes in their hearts, you will not think their powers are outrageous or unreasonable ( the powers do have principles and weakness). How can a person suffered, then got special power, doesn't act superior ? you may think they are conceited, but it proves that their minds are NORMAL (to some extent, though).
And to someone who thinks "Like common, treachery is such a simple thing, everyone can live with it and it is so easily to be forgiven" then you must be living in a deviating and twisting society(at least that's what ya think about it). yeah, i don't like the protagonist's character, either. It's a bit similar to naruto, but it consistent with the plot.As long as Taisuke realized that hirose is a senseless murderer (when he blew up the girl with the braid into dust), they were no longer friends and to think that's brainless, i doubt that you understand anything.
well, i highly recommend this manga for ones who read Gantz or Air gear (lol),for a change in the atmosphere. And i just assess the manga, not the mangaka or whateva so i don't care if it's original or not( artwork is really awesome, especially the cover illustration!), may be it's under rated in Japan.Up to now, this is definitely more than an average manga, i hope it won't let me down in the future.
the plot is pretty original, there's some horror developments and the art is accurate; couldnt ask for anything better (and theres the little princess to save as well eheh)
aldo the fighting scenes are very good
Nice clean art, with good concept for manga is packed with actions and medicore death scene where people get blownup or cut up by supernatural powers, which is very to my likings.
This manga has decent art.
The plot is interesting too. (There are several arc to it.)
Although this turn out to be another super power and hot-blooded teenagers manga. (etc. bleach, one piece where protoganist is strong.)
Overall, its still is enjoyable for the first arc.
The art is fine, the story is okay, but the villains that have power to kill kinda =_= i dont really like the way they are.
They just have the power and started to act like god or something, quite conceited....
Alive is an above par-manga for its genre. It has its fair share of mystery, has a good mix of horror, and is quite dramatic in its own right. The premise is quite amazing - it talks about that value and horror of death, whilst staying somewhat sane.
If I were to combine two manga's, this would probably be Elfen Lied and Gantz, (maybe even but without the absurd amounts of nudity and gore. This manga is a prime example that you can create rounded characters without all the extras, and this manga does just that, and quite well I might add.
10/10
I was reading this, and i was wondering to myself why i was reading it. Something about this manga made me finish up to vol 16 in 1 day. I thought about how stupid it was with all of the brainwashing and insanity. I didnt really like the plot and the antagonist was gay. Probably the only thing i kept looking forward to was the relationship between Taisuke and Nami. Im a sucker for romance.
Dunno why i liked it when i hated everything about it. Weird.
I can't believe this manga got a 8.8 rating damn. Oh well i actually didn't like this manga because it feautres you typical hero who still believes in a friend that actually tried to kill him and also kidnaps his other best friend--that girl. After reading naruto, i just coudn't handle going over that frustration again. Yes the villains are interesting but you are not supposed to root for the villains, you are supposed to root for the hero and so hero's character has to be good and unique and it just isn't. I read 30 chapters of this and just gave up because of this dude. Also the hero's allies generally do not die and that is frustrating. Other than the hero's character this manga is ok i guess. Art is good and plot is ok though cliche at times but cliches work sometimes so i don't mind. Others might like this more if they like heroes who are fully good and naieve but i don't.
