Very well written, but not quite my cup of tea

After binging this instead of sleeping, I'm leaving a review.

I did want to consider dropping it earlier on as this is just, not the kind of work I generally read, but it's well written enough that I really wanted to see where it was going. I also did not like the complete lack of any person with decent morals (or greater), but still well written enough for me to keep going, so I just really have to acknowledge that it is well written.

Otherwise, I was also not a fan of how the big reveals were done (flashbacks and "I knew you knew I knew you knew all along" galore!) or how hard it was trying to redeem certain characters after spending so much time painting them as bad people. What I did like though, was the overall plot, even though I didn't agree with how it was executed a lot of the time, and some of the characters(most of the time).

Lastly, I will say that I absolutely loathe that kind of

open ended ending. Like, for the love of your work, ! pick something and stick with it. Don't pussyfoot around like that!

The side stories were nice, but suffer due to the issues with the ending.

In conclusion, I see why a lot of people praise it. Even if I don't agree with much of it, I have to acknowledge how well written it is. Solid 8/10.

EDIT: I just noticed this has the manhua tag and I feel that I should add that this is probably the best written manhua I've read. Though, not the one I enjoyed the most.

This essentially sums up our strong female mc, Ling Zhi's personality throughout the manhua. The Spirit Queen, otherwise known as Generation's Queen Ling is a masterpiece not only in its astonishing artwork but also in the storytelling department. If I had a word to describe this whole ordeal, it would seem as if it is replicating the scene in a chaotic hunting ground, where the strong prey on the weak with their own interesting methods.

Characters:
Let's start with the section that had any bit of negativity at all, the cast of this manhua. Ling Zhi is goated, not only with her deceptive plots but also in her non-2d personality. She feels real, for the way she speaks, acts, and interacts with other characters. She behaves like a real sinner who had to bear the burdens for the loss of her tribe, a real heroine in the eyes of many, including me. We also have her two alliances, the "King" of the Empire and the Snow King. Both had their spotlights to shine in while cooperating with the mc throughout the end in her plot to stop the war. Minor spoilers:

We also had other less major casts which were subtly hinted to be important and were executed well nearing the final arc. My main problem though is with the Queen mother, who could have had a more intimidating presence in the second half of the story, but just ended up feeling slightly nerfed.

Art:
There's not much to say, it's a piece of beauty that should be framed in a museum. It is impressive that TUTU has the ability to create both a work of art but also make a good plot.

Story:
While it may get confusing at times for those who needed to replenish some brain cells after a long day, the story generally stays cohesive, only altered by sudden events. We get to see the inner workings of the palace and society on a cinematic-worthy scale. Multiple plot twists happen consecutively letting the readers try to guess, what happens next? We are left thinking about which characters are actually on Ling Zhi's side and how they will solve the problems together.

Overall:
9.6/10. Go read it, please. Even if you might not see it in as high a regard as me, I can guarantee that you'll get enjoyment out of it, especially from Season 2 onwards. Note: I read the raws but the English chapters might not have caught up yet.

I don’t usually EVER read manhua due to the fact that there are way too many low quality ones being pushed out. However, I somehow came across this gem and it captured me right from the beginning. The art is beautiful and the storyline just draws you in!

Beautiful Whiplash

Art = 10/10
As many others have said, it’s absolutely gorgeous. No complaints here. The drawing style is unique and each character has such a unique style and expressions.

Plot = 8/10
I gotta say I was frustrated at first because I thought it was a cliché Chinese harem drama, but it turns out it is so much deeper than that. The first big plot twist comes late in the chapters, so be patient. The twists and turns will have you on the edge of your seat and since it’s so convoluted and fast-paced all of a sudden you’ll have whiplash. This story has so many characters each with their own motivations that it’s very easy to get lost. I would never have read this if I couldn’t binge it from time to time (I can read Mandarin relatively fluently). It does makes my brain hurt if I read for too long sometimes tho. But it is easier to remember what’s happening when you don’t have to wait for chapters. The author really isn’t afraid to tackle so many dark issues, so it’s painful to my big softie heart to see these people suffer so much. But I can’t take off 1 point because of my personal squeamishness. The 1 point I took off is solely for how long it took to get to the first major plot twist. I took off another point for how rushed and convoluted the ending is.

Characters = 9/10
I think the FL and ML are very well fleshed-out. The other characters I can see how their development (or regression in some cases) makes sense. I took off 1 point for one of the characters whose character regression did not get shown well. I can understand why it happened after the fact, but I do not like how it happened so fast for such a bland character.

The Snow King became such a huge jerk in the second season just to use Qing Yan against the empress consort and dowager empress. Granted we don’t get to see much of him throughout the series (which is a shame he’s so hot), so maybe his acting transformation had time to work. He’s just so bland and I had the impression that he was more noble and honorable than that. If having his heart broken by the FL is enough to change his personality so much I would be suss if I was the dowager empress or empress consort (maybe not her tho because she kinda dumb). He was so unaffected during his long years in captivity and after losing his people that it seems strange to me that he’d suddenly become such a petty jerk over a slave

Refreshingly unique

I have been DYING to find an old-time palace drama where love is actually used as a weapon and not what everyone is aiming to achieve. That, I think is more realistic than what people might think. If you love dramas, plot twists and a refreshingly cunning heroine and male lead, this is a wonderful example. Would definitely read again.

The palace is akin to a zoo, filled to the brim with snakes and rats.

This manhua truly went beyond my expectations. I'd been dying to read a story about power struggles, betrayals, back stabbing people, and this manhua delivered. The plot twists are (mostly) unpredictable and kept me on edge most of the time.

This is a historical manhua so of course there are nasty palace hoes as far as the eyes can see, but our MC actually learns from her past experiences and uses her damn wits to survive in the palace. She steps over some trash along the way, and I loved every second of it.

Then when S2 starts and she gets a new makeup look? I had to close my eyes for a second and take a deep breath. The fierce new look suits her true personality so much imo. 10/10.

Last but not least, the art. It's fantastic, obviously, and it makes the story flow so much better (the FL's hair do be looking like spaghetti noodles sometimes tho lmao).

Now, on to the negatives:

The author attempted to lighten up the mood of the story by adding humor here and there, but she failed like 95% of the time. It never made me chuckle or even smile, so I just completely ignored it.
At first it was really hard for me to get attached to the characters because they always refer to themselves in the third person, but I gradually got used to it (I understand that that's the way it was back then, but still).
I'm also not completely sold on the main pairing but that's aight. So many things make up for it.

I highly recommend this. However, if you're surviving on your last brain cell, save this story for later. Don't force yourself to read it now, else your remaining brain cell gives up.

Unpredictable plot!

So many twists and turns, I don't even know where to begin.You better buckle in for court politics, drama, deceit, romance, and betrayal! The author is a great story teller - I enjoy the dialog very much; don't even get me started on the beautiful art work! It's unparalleled...honestly, if the storyline was crap, I would still read it.That's how breathtaking each panel is.

Ling Zhi, who we all knew was clearly NOT your average person, aka

Princess Shuoye , is extremely smart, calculating and always deliberating her next moves in order to stay alive. This series shows us that not everything is as it seems...you'll find yourself shocked at every turn - what a thrill!!

Definitely worth a try.

Beautiful illustrations and twisted story

Okay, so there are some points :

The illustration is so captivating that the artist manage to share the mood of every situation, when the coldness of bitter truth bites the characters or of the revelation of painful betrayal. accurate
twisted plot
Half of the story I was cheering for this one character cuz he's so tender and loving and then BAM! he's not the main character. And boy, you cannot tell just where the direction of the story go. you simply cannot expect it to be the light story of harem like many others out there. prepare to be surprised
No good character or bad character here. they all have their own reasons to do what they do

Highly recommended if you're into twisted plots and deep characters
