Description

Chris Watanabe is a high-school teacher. When his father remarries, he finds himself with an English step-brother named Wataru. Wataru transfers to Chris' school, and just as the four of them are starting their new life together, their parents die in a plane crash. Now Chris and Wataru are living alone together. The elder is cute and the younger cool; what will their new life hold for them!?

I would rather read something else

Actually one can break the story down to: The story of a brother to find his love interest.

Said brother (Chris, Japanese) is 24 years old, a teacher, but appears like 16. Apparently he never had interest in love all his years (weirdo #1) and thus is oblivious to it and quite a whiner about BL on top. Now that's nothing new in the yaoi world (more shounen-ai in this manga), but the other guy, his younger brother (Wataru, Brit), is the complete opposite: cool and collected. He is more mature than he should be at his age, 16?, and considering his experience in romance is at the same (zero) level he behaves too unnatural. Weirdo #2. But at least a cool weirdo. Unlike #1.

The scanlation TL was fun too as they made Kurisu-chin to Christine the first volume. lol

Then there are two more male characters, one in love with the older and one, genderbender, in love with the younger brother.
Luckily I got spared the typical over-dramatic clichés such a setting brings in shoujo stories.
The daily routine evolves around those four and doesn't get any interesting in the first volume.

And how conveniently the parents got removed out of the story in the first chapter already. Accident and gone... and quite quickly forgotten too.

The art is just mediocre to me. Didn't appeal to me but wasn't unpleasant either.

In all I didn't warm up to anything, not the characters nor the story or the art.
Actually I like slice-of-life stories but this one didn't focus much on the slice of live either. Wataru gets quite the raw deal in fleshing out his character. As composed as he is and hardly any backstory given he felt like a random pretty boy most of the time.

So basically, the premise of this manga is: "Let's kill off the parents so that the MC's will not only grow closer due to their "mutual pain and heartache" (supposedly; imo it wasn't portrayed in a properly tragic fashion, and I didn't see the characters grieving in any satisfactory way, either), but also have no pesky family to disapprove when they decide they'd like to fu** each other! And that, obviously, is the HEA of the century!"

I don't know why this doesn't offend more people. Or maybe I'm the fool for expecting any kind of sensitivity from the yaoi fanbase, where titles like Viewfinder and Super Lovers are considered the epitome of good storytelling. I don't mind fictitious deaths at all, but to get rid of lovely characters like those parents and treat it as nothing more than the impetus for a sexual relationship between so-called "family members" felt terribly crass to me. (If you're in the mood for a nice family-centric BL (no incest, lol), read the Mainichi Seiten! series instead)

The art is cute in its own way. As per the norm, the "older" uke looks like a middle-schooler and the "younger" seme looks like he's finished school already, but I'm beyond expecting anything else now. (And, yes, you can argue that Japanese people look younger than their years, but then what about the overly mature appearance of every seme ever?)

To be fair, though, the slice-of-life aspect is pretty good and the characterisation is nothing to complain about. And at least it wasn't rape-esque or unnecessarily smutty, which is more than can be said of 95% of the yaoi out there, so I won't rate too harshly.

Another awesome, cute and funny manga from Yamamoto Kotetsuko! I love the author <3

What I especially like in this manga, aside from being awesome, cute and funny (like all of her other manga), are the characters! The adorable small sensei (I like cute, child-like adults in yaoi), his super handsome younger brother (probably one of the hottest characters from Yamamoto Kotetsuko) and his beautiful feminine friend. Love all three. I also like the setting-- high school. It's a nice change that this time most of the author's charas are high school students rather than university students/adults.

I recommend you want some lighter read-- because when it comes to Yamamoto Kotetsuko, even angst and drama is cute, lol!

I wanted to read a slow romance and this was exactly the right choice with its well-paced plot and satisfying build up of the character's emotions. The relationships felt realistic and the story was interesting even if it was a rather simple one.

The characters from the main couple to the supporting cast were all likeable and I absolutely loved how each of them had their own design art-wise. Actually I had read the mangaka's works before but didn't recognize the style right away. I truly enjoyed the art in this manga.

One of the small things I loved as well was how Chris/Kirisu spoke in broken English. I got the feeling there was probably a lot of word play with the two languages and I'd love for this to be licensed in English and translated with this dynamic in mind.

The only thing that knocks a couple of points off is the rushed beginning that wasn't realistic at all. If your parents suddenly die, first of all you better hope to God they don't break the news as harshly as they did here. Secondly, no one gets over such a loss that fast. But it's understandable that the mangaka didn't want to dwell on the tragedy.

All in all, a great read if you want something pleasant, touching but none too deep.

The last thought upon finishing this was "Nice to have a crossdresser that doesn't look like a girl." Because he really doesn't. He looks like an actual crossdresser!! And that's not even part of the story. But it's really a good manga. I really recommend it.

Aah it was really relaxing to read this. I usually read a lot of 'dark ambiance' and angst, and this one was really nice and light for a change, while still being realistic. There's a little drama, but certainly not enough to get my heart aching for the characters, which I was thankful for. There was some pain, but the healthy kind; not the 'aaaah I'm so unhappy I'm gonna kill myself ' kind, if you see what I mean. I enjoyed getting to know the characters bit by bit.
It's really fun, relaxing, cute, and mostly realistic.

I say 'mostly', because the only thing that bothered me was that they seemed to get over the sudden death of both their parents so quickly. I get that neither of them wants to linger in sadness and that they have each other for support, but three days after losing someone I lived my whole life with, I wouldn't be going to school with a smile.

Apart from that, which is really not important at all, it was absolutely worth it to read, so everyone who reads this comment should do the same. You won't regret it! ^^ (If you like the genre of course, but you wouldn't be here in the first place if you weren't interested.)

Oh, and one last thing I didn't get. Both Wataru's parents are English, and his sister is called Matilda, so why the hell did they name him Wataru?? Is it because the mother is Japanophile? (I think she was called that in the first chapter)

I love this mangakas works and this manga was no exception.

However, i felt it was far too dramatic and sudden when the parents died, which is good, but then i didn't really feel sad at all and i felt there was more that could have been said about it. It felt kinda fake and wasn't really expressed in a well, sad way. Also, i was really hoping the tranny and the other guy got together D:that would have put the cherry on the cake

It just felt like there should've been a liiiiittle more to fill it out. Just a tad.

HA! I loved the line, "Don't worry about it, he's just an ordinary transvestite."

I love the characters. They're all hilarious! And it's an interesting setup, too. Not too overdramatic, though it could have been.

I was thrilled to see that neither the younger or older brother had any prejudices toward gay men or transvestites or both. They're both like, "Yeah, okay." The younger one is from England, so that's a little more expected, but I was so glad that the elder brother felt the same way, saying basically that 'love is love' no matter what.

It was a refreshing change from, "But we can't, we're both guys, no, no, no, it's weird, it's wrong, it's strange." Got it. I know the culture's different, but SOMEONE finally did something else.

Hm. I'd think the whole age difference would be a big obstacle for them (the whole Wataru-is-a-minor thing), or the fact that one's a student and one's a teacher at the same school. But no. No offense to them and their sensibilities, but the least of their troubles was that they were both guys.

Normally anything even remotely close to sibling dating, student-teacher relationships, etc. make me run the other way. Somehow this one got me to stick around (mostly because it's not even close to incest).

My favorite scene is when Chris says "don't lie in wait" and Wataru replies, "then don't run away"...

that moment really took it away for me. this is a good manga for those who want to read the awkward side of love...it has its poignant and joyful moments in the right place, not too much drama but enough to make you empathize on the character's emotions.

give it a try if you want a manga w/ substance and less H scenes.

this is my favourite of yamamoto's work; it has slow relationship development, good pacing, and loveable characters, including the supporting cast. and it has a real ending (the person who thought the end was left hanging must have only read the first volume). there is some angst, but it's handled with a light hand. there are no stereotypical seme/uke dynamics. it doesn't rank with my top favourites because it remains light and doesn't really touch on the characters' deeper psychology, but it is satisfying to read.

why in the world do people complain here that a stupid, rip-off streaming site has mislabelled the manga they steal? complain to them, alright? anyway, even if it were labelled "yaoi" that doesn't mean there'd be a lot of sex, it just means there is some actual sex displayed; the way "yaoi" is used in the west includes everything from sex that's barely shown and with invisipeens to boot, all the way to hardcore BDSM torture porn; you can never just go by that single label.

IMO it wouldn't have been better with more sex. some BL stories feel like something is lacking when it's left out, but not this one. it really didn't need it; the story's tone is well-suited to not including any graphic stuff. the kissing is plenty, and it's very nice. i enjoy yamamoto's art; while it doesn't take any risks, it's clean, expressive, and free from the flowery shoujo stuff.
