I really liked the first few chapters of this series, I mean REALLY liked them so I'm pretty upset that I just finished Vol. 2 and I'm dropping this series. The series is nothing like what it starts out to be, and it's one of those things where you should just read chapter 1-2 and drop it so you can preserve that memory of it. Or not read it at all.
The art: the art is beautiful, I mean, I sketch and this is just a guy who can bring you to your knees with some of these arts. The sweeping scenic views off cliff sides and especially if he chooses to draw something from beneath the water he gives it this amazingly vibrant look to it. It made me want to swim in the sea lol. To be clear, I'm a total sucker for these scenery-porn-light-plot-slice-of-life series... that is not what this is by the way.
The plot and characters: chapter one starts off real good, you have this young guy who's arriving on the island to find this place in a photo of his dead mom. No deep meaning, no dark drama, he's just wants to see this place in his life. He meets this sweet girl (really nice, a little airheaded... you know this type of character) and she takes him up to this cliff. It's a little stereotypical but it does what it does really well and it's a happy read. This goes down hill fast.
By the end of volume one alone it spirals off into this insane plot of coincidences and bullcrap. Yes, it's a harem. It COMPLETELY ABANDONS THE ORIGINAL PLOTLINE to make him the God of some local shrine and sets up these three girls to be his servants, so yes, it's a harem. If you're not writing for the small group who has a thing for harems (like the first few chapters will draw in people who don't) it's a hard thing to do, because, you know, you have to actually write a plot and have girls who are girls and not... props. This is the worst kind of harem, it treats girls like crap, no one female in this story has any backbone or wants to do anything besides Sigh please their man and cook. Has the mangaka ever met a real girl? NO ONE TALKS LIKE THIS.
The harem goes nowhere and you are set up for 8 volumes of dumb middle-school esque sex jokes and gosh the tough life of a guy surrounded by these airheads who will he choose someone shoot me now... I'm sorry, why does everything just fall into this guy's lap? People fall in love with him for no reason, his dad pays for everything and he doesn't work, does anyone else hate this dumb stuck-up guy who think he knows everything?
So why couldn't the author just write something fun and original, 'cause chapter one shows he knows how. OK, maybe not original but nice and not stab-your-eyes-out annoying. Is he just insecure? That he writes this crap, where it's like a retread of a retread of a retread of a plot. And these beautiful places with such boring people. Everyone on this island seems to just be rich, they all have nice houses, and creative architecture, and fantastic wildlife and clear blue skies and beautiful beaches and they're playing out this shitty second rate harem plot? What wasted artistic talent!
