Possibly one of the most underrated series out there

If people were expecting a manga about three overpowered high school girls in a military mission to be realistic, I don't really know what to say. What this manga does really well, though, is giving a somewhat consistent hard sci-fi feeling that helps building a strong wall of suspension of disbelief. It's not a case that every objection, that previous reviewers have done, has been actually explained or explored over the course of the story. Starting from Ibara's "naivety", that is shown to have way deeper roots than our usual Mary Sue. Apart from some silly moments (and what long-runner doesn't have them anyway), the plot stays consistent and increasingly engrossing. The author often uses last minute saves, but it doesn't feel annoying, because he goes out of his way to build them up, so that they don't feel like coming out of nowhere. One glaring example may be a huge hole in a zone of Tokyo, which is obviously presented to us because it will be needed later: it's much appreciated, because the reader does know of this hole when it finally comes into play, and the fact that it doesn't happen immediately after it's been introduced is also a plus. The characters are a strong point of the manga: we're not treated to long expositions about them, instead their personalities are shown through their actions, which is typical of good storytelling. It's great to see that even the survivors, with little screentime, are given depth: it's not often that I actually care about the annoying kid who puts everyone in trouble all the time, or that I actively root for the characters to survive. Character development is well done most of the time, but we do get some logical jumps for some of the characters. Drama and comedy are mixed with the right timing, and apart from a couple of moments that focus on action for too long, the pacing is handled in the right way. The only major flaw is the excessive parody of the countries' leaders, which feels out of place in respect to the realistic feeling the manga is trying to give every other time. The manga is never rushed and also wraps itself up quite well, even if a bit of fridge logic makes it clear that some other chapters would have been required to truly end the story.

All in all, it's not the best manga I've ever read, but I found it to be above average, and while 7 is the mark I think it deserves, that's based on my way of giving votes: according to this site standards, it's very underrated.

Unrealistic, stupid, naive girl

The main girl is really naive. The commander says the medicine to treated the affected people is "limited" because it's "hard" to produce. She counters "just produce more." Wtf? Is she deaf? Stop wasting valuable medicine with these idealistic "I will save everyone" bullshit.

Not only that, the premise of a radiation zoned area is ridiculous. Radiation is indiscriminate but for some reason the animals/bugs are immune... I know this fiction but at least make things consistent. Jeebus christ.

The anime's an improved version

The anime ties up a lot of the flaws this manga has, and adds a plus with it's great production quality. I wouldn't have read it without the influence from the great anime, but I can't say that I'm a dedicated reader of this series, and will go on following the anime production while reading this.

Rescue exploratory action

Outside of the high school girl thing, this is a nice "hard" science fiction story, as in plausible and based on what at least sounds like real science as oppose to just making something up and saying its science. In fact, as we all know an earthquake really did almost crack some nuclear reactors in japan. People always say reality is harsher but this reminded me how we've avoided so many worst case scenarios.

Only very minor flaw is that these girls don't seem trained for this mission(least two out of three) that is suppose to be their sole purpose and it makes no sense that their dressed as they are either. It'd make more sense if they acted as if they were from a military academy. I usually say that there's never any reason why people need to explain why the main characters are an all girl squad but It doesn't quite make sense to send such regular acting girls. Then again, I don't know how soldiers would react either. Also seems a bit much to make genetically engineered children just for one rescue spot, the legality of it is questionable, and it's seems like a black op. Soldiers like this might be useful but having to raise them sure doesn't. This might all be explained as the story goes on.

Even though it takes place in a future where everyone is fine on a nationwide and global scale, the area the main story takes place is like a pseudo post apocalyptic scenario. The group doesn't know much about the situation so we're learning with them how things are to some extent. But there's plenty of action as well, not in the sense of Hokuto No Ken but more like The Road. The situation is always changing, as they travel and have to deal with the animals and people that inhabit the city.

Very absurd and unrealistic.
Story about three radiation-immune schoolgirls going to radiation-obsessed Tokyo, where everything was killed by radiation except some dogs, rats, birds, people ...err what?
Actually it more like three schoolgirls vent out for picnic to post-disastrous Tokyo. To make some fun they took few medicine guns to scare locals. To make it more realistic the story tell us they lived under some 999 Sieverts for 20 years till those girls appear. To make story more dramatic they call via 27 MHz radio school principal every 5 pages. Funny.

well as you can see, the fantasy has become realtiy.... (well not in tokyo...)
except that the 3 Girls

with imuntiy to radiation due to antibodys cannot exist...

And all my respects to the engeneers: It is not (well normally) that the engineers fail, but that busnissman and politicians do not want to build save reactors because the cost a lot of money

even mentioned in the manga( by the 3 girls): the elecric company had such a big areal...

As for the manga: extreamly real (although antibodys wont save the problem) - extreamly good. Thrilling, with action and mystery. (what a pity that there is no romance [so far])
10/10 in particular for picking this theme 3 years ago where nobody would have belived it possible.

So in light of recent events, this manga is very topical, and the two preceding commenters have proven to be skilled nuclear engineers, just like the ones who built Fukushima, lol.

I like the art in this book, but the name is very 'wat' even by Japanese standards.

i don't know what its like in japan, but in america, so many people are afraid of nuclear power that we are forced to stick with tech that is 50+ years old, even though a new reactor would be safer and cleaner. if japan is like that at all, and why wouldn't they be having been nuked twice, being forced to stick with a older tech soley because people are afraid of revamping and making things newer.

Pretty Stupid

Rather silly considering how impossible it is to have a nuclear meltdown with a modern nuclear reactor. You crack break or nuke a modern reactor, and the only thing that will happen is that the reaction will stop because of a lack of a core component.

Now I would not want to be anywhere near a nuclear reactor using graphite cores, but the modern ones are virtually indestructible, heck they they are designed to take a direct hit from a nuke and not crack.
