I agree with you wholeheartedly except on one point: There was a time in the l980s of gold and even platinum cards without cell phones. I think gold cards were available even earlier than that!
However, there were cars around that didn't have to turn into mini-dragons when exhausted, though.

With the Saiyuki series of stories, don't read it for its conclusion. It isn't the type of story to build up to a climax. It is a "on the road with the boys" series. It is the adventures they get into along the way that is the reason to read it.
Each of the four men have distinct personalities.
You don't read it for historical time frame either. A monk with a gold credit card as they travel but no cell phones.
