I liked Angel Densetsu and I liked this, but I don't think they were that similar.
In the first chapter, when Masaya was talking about wanting a LOHAS life and yet continually running into violence, I thought it was a bit similar.
Which is to say, so long as Masaya was /talking/. Already after the 1st chapter, his actions began to speak louder than his words.
Angel Densetsu is about a gentle-hearted guy who can't even fight offensively--- his strength is dodging, absorbing blows, and when truly worked up pushing people.
Whereas Masaya lights motorcycles on fire in the name of revenge. And beat up adults when he was a THIRD GRADER. And finds it physically impossible to perform a dogeza, and extremely difficult to apologize.
He manages to still be likable, but in a VERY different way than the innocent sweetness of the "Wouldn't harm a fly" character of Angel Densetsu.
I mean, "innocent" and "sweet" are words that would be applied to Masaya only in his own delusional daydreams... (I could hear "essentially well-intentioned". Or maybe "kind in his own very... special... way")
The entire feeling of the manga was different for me. The relationship between the two male characters, a kind of trusting friendship, felt very different from the fear-awe-servitude relationship Angel's main character had with the other males. Since that's a pretty large part of the manga, it makes the whole tone feel different (...um, I happen to prefer this version. I loved AD but not really for the secondary male characters, who felt somewhat dull and repetitive...)
Because the manga doesn't really revolve around people misinterpreting the main characters' action as demonic (key word: "misinterpret"... they more like "interpret" them as demonic) the conversations that are somewhat similar to AD ("is he a bad person? is he not?") end up feeling different, as well...
Only one of the female characters is really anything like the girl from Angel Densetsu, and even there, not really...
Basically, after all that tl;dr:
There's definitely a passing resemblance. But beyond that, they're rather different.
Well, can't deny it shares some similarities with Angel Densetsu, but I think it manages to keep its own path. Masa isn't Kitano, they share a scary face but the personality is different, even if they maybe share some personality traits they carry them out in different ways. Comedy style is somehow alike to the mangaka's other works, like "I'm Doushiro" and "Tenshi no konamaiki"
The manga started off with a good premise. It had kind of an Angel Densetsu/Kyou Kara ore Wa feel to it. However the balance was thrown off in the first half of the manga, with the comic timing getting worse as the manga progressed. Also the relationship between the main male lead and his love interest is never shown to progress beyond a point, even as the manga ends in a disappointing conclusion.
While it was a pleasant read, I felt the story never quite had a particular focus to it, characters apart from the male lead didn't have enough development and the climax didn't build up enough to lead to a grand finale. The manga does not live up to its potential
It's actually a nice story I laugh a lot with some chapters they're very entertaining and you really wont be able to hold your laughter...LOL
But I'm a bit disappointed with the ending. It lacks in a lot of way. Like;
That's all, but still I like this just hoping for more.
u know, when i saw the Cover and the Summary i thoght this is just another boring manga with a bad boy wanna be a good boy.
But,i was wrong...i tried to peek a bit and surprisingly i fell in love with this manga both Story and Art pretty decent....
i'm starting to fell in love with this Mangaka Art style....
I recall enjoying most of this story quite a bit, despite it being occasionally pretty similar to Angel Densetsu. But when I finished the last twelve chapters after a long break, that whole section felt like a really low-quality story, where hardly anything was happening. What a weirdly boring, drawn-out ending D:.
Not a bad plot, great comedy, good romance, and great character.... but I wouldn't expect less from the author of kyou kara ore wa 😛 . Great story, not quite as great as kkow imo but still great 9.5/10
Also its true its not that similar to angel densetsu... main character is misunderstood but he isn't exactly nice to those on his bad side.... no real hostility, just punishment at an "appropriate level" XD
I am taking one point off for the art. And then, I am giving the point back, because the amateurish art actually makes the story funnier. I can not imagine Devil Ma-kun and Yamada drawn any other way.
It starts sort of like Angel Densetsu. But it's different. Devil really is a Devil. And the more he embraces his essential devil nature, the better he becomes.
i like how he isnt timid but arrogant i like how he doesnt make wierd noises like KIKIKIKIK or KKKIIIEEEEEE umm...i like how he actually is a delinquent but acts like hes peaceful haha funn guy
This is actually the first of his works I started reading a few years back, though Kyou Kara wa Ore Wa!! was written later, this was scanlated in earnest first.
If you've read his other works, rest assured he's done it again here. Every bit as funny as his other series.
If you haven't read any of his stuff and like comedy, then I can only tell you that his works may be the funniest manga i've ever read.
I REALLY need to watch/read Cheeky Angel. 😛
