After multiple failed attempts to read this, I’ve given up. All my friends were raving about how kickass Misaki is, but it was after reading Kaichou that I realized I hate tsunderes, or any characters who pretend to feel a certain way when it’s painfully obvious they feel the opposite. Seriously, it’s annoying as hell. Misaki may be “tough” on the outside, but she never truly gained my respect and has somewhat of an overrated reputation. All she ever does is blush in front of Usui telling him he’s an idiot. She’s also seriously underdeveloped with an unexplored past, which is not good considering she’s the main lead. But it doesn’t stop there.

I am probably the only girl who dislikes Usui. Maybe just the way he treats her. It seems like he’s all that, cool, badass, sexy, rich, suave ect on the outside, but his demeanor bores me. He comes across as rather teasing but not all together that emotional or deep. I see no vulnerable moments - it’s always Misaki being bullied or teased ect. Their entire dynamic really confounds me and I’m surprised it’s been able to work thus far. A lot of this manga is really random and the slice-of-life drama just goes on and on until you get to Usui’s past which is a good change, but what about Misaki’s development? I mean, there’s barely any plot. As for the humor, it’s not my type, but you may find it hilarious. The art is rather good though not the best but for shoujo lovers (sometimes I think I fall more into the shoujo critic category), this is probably a good bet for you, if you don’t have my pet peeves about the characters.

Good for shoujo starters and preteens.

When I was younger, probably my middle school days (I'm a college student now), I used to like this manga quite a lot. I recently finished it and least to say, my opinion as my young adult self differs a lot from my preteen.

Characters - overall, 6.5
Barely any of them had character development and honestly, I couldn't really find anyone super duper memorable or likeable. Even the side characters, most of them - well, were just there. A few had development, but they weren't even focused on and honestly, I felt like Misaki and Usui were the same since chapter 1 aside from Misaki kind of overgrowing her hatred of men.

Usui was dull and boring and literally the definition of Gary Sue - powerful, extremely smart, good at cooking, good at every instrument (probably), superhuman abilities, rich family, sad (?) past, and good-looking. What is there not to like? The fact that he literally has no flaws which by the way, characters should have in order to be an actually GOOD character imo.

I didn't find him likeable, but I guess him being perfect is part of the comedy, right?

I didn't understand the whole Hinata likes Misaki thing - why even bother writing him as a love rival when there literally is no opening for him because Usui's too OP anyways?

Backstories - overall, 5.5
Sort of dumb tbh, I was sort of hoping for Misaki's hatred or bad judgment of men to actually come from a really deep reason, but most of it was father left family and they had to shoulder his debt and it ended up with the mother pretty much lying about him (he went to go help his friend apparently) so their daughters won't worry which was bad because they ended up resenting him and hating him instead.

Sorry, but I felt like it should have been written better instead of something so silly, but then again, this is comedy.

Usui's background was really, really out of place and random and honestly, I felt like it added A LOT of unnecessary drama and literally no character development came out of it imo.

Art - overall, 8.0
Definitely one of the reasons I did like this manga was the adorable art and of course, the maid costumes. However, I did sort of prefer the old art over the newer style. Before, it seemed more neater and cleaner and the characters were all very pretty in a simple sort of way, but later on it becomes more standard shoujo with a bunch of heavy screentones and blushing everywhere.

Romance - overall, 5.5
So basically Misaki fell in love with Usui because unlike other boys, he was the definition of 'perfect' which goes great because it turns around her bad judgment of boys - he was always there to save her, he's suave, he's a stalker, and he's a perverse creep who pulled up her skirt to see what kind of panties she was wearing - of course, this is all justified because he's hot. LOL ok

I have to admit, they had some cute moments honestly, but it was all very cliche and didn't really make me go 'doki doki' sadly as I reread it. Though, I can understand why a lot of readers love this manga a lot and love the romance in it.

It's literally a strong-willed tsundere girl (apparently, I'm sure a lot of young readers can easily relate to Misaki) who gets together with a super perfect guy (attractive appearance and all) and face a lot of really random hardships together.

Ending - overall, 8.0
I liked the ending, I like how it ended with a ten years later version of what happens next to our favorite couple and I love that in shoujo. I love what happens to the relationship in a time skip preview and I think it means a lot of readers. I wish more shoujo manga did this tbh, (-cough- Hirunaka no Ryuusei-) you know, instead of we got together and overcame a lot of stuff - the end.

One thing I have to say though that while I loved the timeskip and all, I felt like the manga dragged on way too much and would have done better if it went like the anime route (Misaki and Usui implied ending basically).

I apologise in advance to people, as this is a rant.

For starters, this is a really good manga because, even though it follows many clichés found in shoujo manga, this makes it wonderful as it doesn't rush the story, and is the natural progression of love between a hater of men and... Usui, for lack of a better word. The fact that Misaki doesn't suddenly turn around and says "I love you!" and they live happily ever after, adds to the realism, as it takes many trials and efforts for Usui to squeeze into Misaki's heart. Also, the fact that after becoming a couple, he hatred for men doesn't diminish, but over time as she makes new friends, and even how she still acts like Misaki around Usui, even when dating.

Secondly, Misaki is tsundere. Meaning she is prone to dramatic changes which makes her ever so loveable, people who say she becomes a blushing idiot. You're the idiot, as that is the essence of tsundere, otherwise it would be just tsun, an angry, violent, unloveable female dog that would be boring for a main character. She becomes more tsundere in later chapters, but less tsun and more dere as Usui slowly becomes important to her.

Thirdly, Usui has been, from the very start, and always will be, a pervert. It's what makes Usui, Usui. It isn't forced, but a natural feature he has. For those who say it's forced or unnatural, are idiots too. If he wasn't perverted, it wouldn't make him Misaki's most incompatible guy, and therefore destroy a somewhat mismatched couple element. Also, he wouldn't have been able to break down Misaki's defences like he did.

Fourthly, Misaki doesn't change when she becomes a couple with Usui. Yes she may become more dere than tsun like she was with him, but that's the point. She changes, not to an absolute different person, but to a more open person to him, like he cracked her shell. A relationship is good if it changes people in that way.

Sorry for the rant. This is a worthwhile manga with a realistic love story, even if people have personal preferences which deny this. For me, however, it was truly the best shoujo manga I've ever read.

Okay, first of all I like this manga very much. I started reading it from 1st vol and yes it keeps dragging when it reached 3rd and 4rd vol. But I keep on with it cause I already been in love with the character of this manga. And Thank God, the story become better as long as it moves forward. I think it when the author is said to change a bit about the story and it turn out to be good. More of romance scene between Usui and Misaki is the most I like! Truthfully, I've never seen other shoujo manga that can makes me blusshing just from reading it.
Most people says this manga is cliche, I think it's true. But doesn't all shoujo manga like that? But I can't be bored when reading this manga.

In my opinion this manga was really really a favorite till midway when
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
they finally got together
after that the whole plot was filler filled, boring, overly sweet and overly complicated and i really disliked the ending.
Loving this series so much in the beginning does leave you even more disappointed, so maybe my rating is a bit harsh. Either way, I would recommend to read this manga only till the mentioned part and drop it after that.

After endeavouring to read Kaichou wa Maid-sama! the third time I am pleased to say that it is now on my complete list. It starts off well enough. The first 40 chapters or so were quite humorous and I had a blast while reading them. The latter half though... I have some serious complaints about it.

Spoiler (mouse over to view)
Misaki and Usui get together. After this their relationship becomes sooo boring. It's usui teasing her every single time, then Misaki blushes and calls him a perverted alien before giving in. Overused plot much?

Usui first transfers to Miyabigaoka and then to Britain. That's all well and fine. But for what reason? He wants to confront the "Walker" family. I didn't see any confrontation of any sort in the manga.

Igarashi Tora then offers to help Misaki to get to Britain because he wants Usui to inherit the Walker family line. He teaches her high society stuff life dancing, manners etc. They don't put any of this to use in the end because he plans to help Usui escape by making Misaki jump on the castle's rooftop in a maid uniform!! Where's the sense in this? He wanted Usui to inherit not escape! Their talk and actions were completely contradictory.

And is it necessary to have every single male character fall in love with Misaki? The part about Igarashi tora falling for her was nonsense. There was no proper development towards it.

The manner in which they talked in the latter half irritated me to death. I can't explain it, but people who have read many shoujo stuff should know. It's probably the scanlator's fault here. I am not very sure though.

By the time it ended I was so fed up that even the last chapter failed to make me smile with nostalgia.

There's absolutely no character development as well. The characters remain the same from the beginning to the end. Usui is still the cool, haunted by the past guy. Misaki remains temperamental and gets flustered easily. Yukimura is still the guy who is mistaken for a girl and a crybaby. It gets boring after a while.

I could keep complaining about this manga all day long. But in spite of all my complaining I give this a 6/10. I won't say I enjoyed it, but I didn't hate it as well. It's okay if you are into shoujo, I guess. Like Asani said before me, this would have been much more enjoyable if it had only been half as long. Suffice to say that I won't be re reading this.

I don't have any right to rate this manga since i did not finish reading it. It became boring for me the moment i reached the middle part of the story since it became a drag. But i did enjoy the story at the start. I also liked the way the manga was drawn.

I have never laughed so much reading a manga. It's not about the art (I've seen my share of great artwork, but this is pretty), but the female character isn't those annoying, whiny types or the pushover, idiotic types. Sure, sometimes the "perfect" at everything gets on your nerves like most manga, but I'd give this a 10/10 just for the humor, art, and characterization.

this manga started off really good and had a lot of potential. today i finished reading the 59th chapter and unfortunately, there has been no character development at all since the first chapter. The main girl is supposedly "strong" even though she failed to show her mental strength in ALL situations. well you could say that she is strong (physically, that is) and she shows it through violence. she is always thinking that she puts pressure on the main lead, but never takes any action to change that. she is also super sexist, she treats the male and female students differently. the manga was supposed to be based around how she manages her life with being both the president and a maid but latest chapters has NOTHING to do with her being a maid. the manga really got off topic. all in all, the main girl is one of the most annoying female leads out there. she doesn't express what she feels, always misunderstanding other people, very oblivious and even though she is supposed to be "smart", her character shows no sign of that. The main male lead is a typical shoujo main character. he is "best" at everything he does, and he always sticks to the female lead without any apparent reason (he started doing it from the first chapter). Their romance is not so much love but more like, i'm sorry to say, lust because it is very rare to see them having a decent conversation with each other without super blushing, pretending and lying (specially the main girl lies all the time). so there is not any development of the romance in the psychological sense. so to wrap it up, if you are reading shoujo mangas for a long time and tired of cliche stupid stories without any good plot, this is not the one for you. if you are a new shoujo reader and still don't mind plotless stories with shoujo type of romance, you will have fun reading this manga. even though a lot of parts are really boring even for a starter! just skip through the boring pages, those don't add to the manga anyways smile

I'm a guy and tend to ignore shoujo like the plague but this series is seriously good. I must've gotten some of my mother's genes that likes to see a little romance in stories because I'm hooked on this manga. The humour is cute and the two protagonists are adorable. The artwork is really good and not what I expected for a shoujo manga, which just shows my lack of knowledge about the genre.
If you haven't picked this series up yet then I strongly recommend you do so.
