Well... this situation is somehow hilarious. Lots of people complain about the end and complain how horrible it is and try to analyse why it was such a "piece of crap". Haha.
Did you actually read this story? Yes? Then you should have noticed that THIS ending can't be all there was to it. That mangaka planned all this - the frustration and anger about this "ending" was planned since at least past chapter 72. (Check out the chapter title). So no - that can't be all there was to it. He wouldn't plan such a shitty ending after doing all these foreshadowings and leaving all those clues...
I expect a sequel. A good one. And I expect a good amount of my theories to be crushed mercelessly. After all, this is the reason I love Tokyo Ghoul. It's a trip where you can't predict its ending. And where you continue to look back only to realize: Oh! This was all already there somewhere. So yeah. To sum it up: Don't read it now, read it in one or two months. Because if you do, right now you'll only be left in frustration, anger and worry like all those people who kept reading it until the end. (They wouldn't be so pissed off if they didn't enjoy the story) You are honestly better off reading it after the sequel was announced. (*I don't know for sure though whether Ishida will really announce a sequel - so don't take my word for it please!)

Update: One month later the sequel began running... just as predicted. Aaaand my theories were pretty much crushed, I'm really interested whether I'm correct with the few remaining ones. So please, you may begin reading now, you are in for a bloody ride 🙂

I stumbled upon this story when I was looking for a horror manga (its not that scary). And I was pleasantly surprised by how good it was. I won't spoil anything but you should check it out.

Sarts off Good, Starting to become Stereotypical

I will keep this short and simple:
+Interesting premise
+Realistic reactions/emotions
+pretty damn well paced
+cool and unique characters

-not very strong climb to climax, meaning, the story started off awesome, but is starting to go downhill
-characters in later story are not very sympathetic
-instead of an emotional roller coaster, it becomes a fighting manga around 4-5ish volume :\
-I read all the way up to the 100th chapter so far and frankly, I know how it is going to end, unless there is a plot twist which I can still kind of guess where it is going

I gave it a 10/10 so that the Bayesian Average will rise and make it up higher in the rankings, in actuality, it's around a 8.5/10. No manga is perfect; I just want more people to find out about this manga, because it is worth reading.

I've been skipping this manga for quite a while due to the "horror" and "psychological" categories that come with it, as I'm not really good with stuff of that kind. Gave a few horror manga a try and they were too creepy or outright scary for my tastes.

Oh, how wrong I was! I'm really glad that the horror part related to the slightly gruesome scenes and the psychological to the MC's troubles.

The manga is beautifully fleshed out, the mangaka paying a lot of attention to every scene. Throughout 143 chapters of this well-built story, you'll encounter a wide variety of interesting characters in difficult situations. It deals well with "racism" of sorts, from both sides; are ghouls and humans able to live side by side?

Fight scenes are short and to the point, while the plot will devour you right from the first chapter, making you itch for answers and explanations; head on to the next chapter. Does the MC find the peace he is looking for? Is he able to contribute to a world in which he'd be happy to live in? I can't stress enough how well-crafted the scenes are, with a lot of hints about future events. Do yourself a favour and read this one carefully, engross yourself in the wonderful art by the mangaka and don't worry - there is an equally good (so far) sequel!

Dammit. I went into this manga knowing it was horror/tragedy (aka LOTS OF DEATHS) and yet I managed to let down my guards by the first chapter... 🙁

This manga was really good, and honestly, the poor main character needs a break. His life sucks. I cry so much for him.

** BUT GAHD I NEED MORE! I NEED TO KNOW WHAT HAPPENS DANG IT! ** <-- binged read this and now i have withdrawal symptoms.

Good but falls off

I love the concept and the fact that the main character is on the 'wrong side' and all the psychological exploration that comes of that. The art is solid, the author is not afraid to widen his cast, so the society feels real, which I like.

The problems:
-Too narrowly focused on particular sub-plots and loses it's synthesis as a story on the whole. He has great ideas, but executes them one at a time: first it's the his adaption and how that effects relationships with his old/new friends, then it's the new people he meets around him when learning his new lifestyle, then it's the government encroachment, then it's back to another plot on ghoul society, then back to another government plot, etc, and the mangaka sort of forgets the other stories while he's doing another, so you'll have a whole volume of one plot, then a whole volume of another, so it's really strange when suddenly he sees this 'best friend' of his again after 3 volumes and then doesn't see him anymore after that...
-Shounen style hero: As I mentioned at the beginning, there are great characters, the problem is, they sort of flip on themselves, so the enemy becomes the good little sidekick, all his psychological problems blown away by being beaten up by the main character (this happens a lot). The main character also had a lot of interesting concerns and personality traits that just get thrown away for him to be badass... which is momentarily exciting, but it destroys the development and long term coherence...
-Shounen style bad guys- I guess this goes hand in hand with the previous two problems, but the really important bad guy in one plot is removed, introduce new really bad guy, remove, etc and the whole story revolves around the bad guys, which sort of makes it boring after a couple arcs...

So, great manga, definitely worth reading, just no reread value and probably will go onto your unfinished list, so don't read it if you want to finish the series ^_^; (note that I am the kind of guy who got bored of naruto and bleach and noblesse etc etc so if you can continue reading those series for evermore, then this is perfect for you too)

I'm so glad that Twisted Hel Scans picked this one up, I almost feared i would never be able to read it after LA dropped it. The main character may start off a bit annoying but i find his behaviour to be very realistic in regard to his situation.
As this is my first manga about ghouls (as a main theme) I really look forward to further development. It definitely shows a lot of potential.

Tokyo Ghoul is an amazingly well told story. In a twisted world where ghouls ( humanoid human flesh eating creature) live amongst the human, Kaneki find his life turned upside down by a cetain incident that turned him from human to ghoul. The author successsfully depict the anxiety, fear, and despair that Kaneki experience as he struggled to stay human despite of his changed state. And as he learn about the life of ghouls, he is eventually dragged to the elongated fights of ghouls against their own kind and the doves, humans who fights ghouls.

Tokyo Ghoul started slow as Kaneki learn his way to live as ghoul but the pace will fasten as the fights began. In the anime you will learn little about ghouls and their abilities so reading the manga won't be a waste of time.

To me , this series is great because of its natural flow.

The author successfully depicts Kaneki's struggles wih his new life as ghoul:how he struggle to restrain his ghoulself, how he wish to protect his ghoul companions, how he finally accept his ghoul part and strive to get stronger to protect his companions. Through the story we feel like we want to cheer for him and pity him for everythong that happen to him. Other chars are also well developed, ghouls and dove alike. They make you feel you want to cheer for both sides as you have favs on both sides.

The balance of power between ccg and ghouls are great, while humans have disadvantge in term of raw strength it's well covered by increasingly better equipments and strategy. Both investigators and ghouls have badass figures, one that won't fall easily even against stronger adversary. Also, kaneki despite of his constant growth was never overpowered. Part of this is maybe because he stil fear he power that will make him lost himself.

Also Tokyo Ghoul has seemingly deep plot involving secret orgs and a (mad) scientist who is obssessed in turning human to ghouls. The ccg is also not free of controversy, and there seems to be bigger mistery to the world as why ghoul could exist and why they have very similar appearance to human.

Overall this series is great. Don't worry about the ending, it doesn't seems to be the ending of the series to me, although I did somehow discouraged about it for some reasons. Don't get me wrong. Even at it's end I found myself still hungry for more chapters of TG and the story has definitely ways to go on. Those who said its bad are like people who stopped watching a series after its first season and said it has bad ending.

The sequel has begun its serialization so for you who was put down by the ending or after learnt the ending, cheer up. It may start slow but it will definitely get better. This series is great and it has potentials to be even greater.

Itchy tasty

The series is firstly very good, employs a unique art style, has characters one can get behind and a steadily developing world. I also find the handling of gore (a bit like a french album) and minimal nudity interesting.
Tons of messed up but always justified acts of violence happen to everyone (none are safe) but here is the kicker.
The actual "gore" aspect is just out frame most of the time but instead we get to see detailed and agony filled close-ups of the victims and perpetrators faces or reaction shots from onlookers. Ah so many feels.
I may love justified gore as much as any true seinen connoisseur to clarify but restrain is a lost art and Sui knows that language well. Best of all nearly everything has lasting consequences from deaths that stick to lasting darkness just under the smiles of the leads. There is further a lot of grey morality going on and the villains and anti-heroes all feel justified in their own way. A bit like the classic 10/10 Akira. The narrative itself starts of with a bang but settles down in a decent for a lack of words "shonen"grove (the series first small flaw) but then something Big happens around the middle, the series then gets a slight kick in the pants and kicks into high gear. I am not talking about an increase of action scenes by the way. A bit like Attack on Titan (8/10).
Not much time is wasted thereafter and now to the second and final flaw. Most heroic characters are a bit too innocent or "clean" for lack of a better term to fit into their world or even ours. I don´t need a sex + drugs orgy by any means but it would be nice if the all the rather cute shipping would lead to more then longing stares for example.
So no real flaws at all and my rating could go up a bit if the story stays strong. By that i meat the fact that RE isn´t a standalone sequel and more like a volume 15 (just like the pointless US-comics renumbering) but the short spin-off Jack is sadly a skip worth 5/10 mess. The same applies to the sadly rushed and changed anime adaptation.
The happier parts of the manga remind me of Angel Densetsu (10/10), the action scenes and restraint of the highly heroic Claymore (8,5/10), the darker parts of Parasyte (10/10) and why not try the king of seinen Berserk (10/10) if you are at it. Sui´s latest work "The Penisman" (8/10) lastly proves that he isn´t a one trick pony as it is a sex comedy about cannibalism amongst other topics... Hm.

This manga flowed very nicely. It had really good fight scenes that you could easily follow and it was overall a very nicely put together story. The characters developed a lot throughout the series because of all theyre going through, especially Kaneki. Even the minor details were interesting and made me curious. Was I the only one that actually wanted to read the books involved in the story like the black goats egg? If these are real books Id really like to read them. If not then that just shows how great of an author Ishida is.
