Description

[From DMP]:

Nana has no memory of his childhood earlier than age 12 when a store owner took him in and named him Nana, meaning no-name in Japanese. Mitsuha is on a quest to find a missing childhood friend. The two meet when Mitsuha ends up crashing at Nana's place at the insistence of a mutual friend. At first Nana loathes the very existence of Mitsuha. However, he gradually warms up to his sincerity and kindness and finds happiness in awakening beside him.

The stories in this manga are mostly all right, perhaps a bit underdeveloped? I like the setting and the characters enough to want to know more about them - the mangaka clearly had good ideas in her mind, but her lack of experience at this early point in her career was quite visible. A lot of stuff was thrown in there but was never truly touched on and efficiently used to support the stories/ development, which is really such a shame because the potential was obviously there. Still, this was a pleasant read and I like its gentle air throughout the whole manga.

This is a good read - it's entertaining, the characters are likable though not too deep and the art is very good.
Since this is just one volume and contains two couples, it's really short, and might leave you feel a bit unsatisfied and wanting more.
It's also not big in the smut scene department, counting only one and that is not too thorough either.
However if you enjoy mellow, a bit sad and down to earth stories, especially orphans, step brother love and such, give it a shot!
Don't expect something deep and life changing.

A beautiful piece of work

I was really surprised when I saw the previous comments and ratings, I think this manga doesn't have the recognition it deserves.

I can understand all the critiques about it being too short and confusing, but the fact that not all the questions are answered (so the short lenght) isn't a problem to me, on the contrary. What I like in this manga is that a certain mistery is kept up, and the accent is put on the encounter of the characters and what they go through to recognize their love.

It's the way that counts, not the ending, and so I don't find this too short or lacking development. The unanswered questions allow us to imagine how things could be (like for the reunion of the brothers), and tha'ts something I appreciate though it's not often used in yaoi mangas, and besides that, I think the plot is developed enough to not leave us unsatisfied.

I especially liked how in the first story, Nana was able to go ahead even though he still doesn't remember his past. I also liked how the emotions are not always overshown, which leaves enough space to see things from the character's point of view.

What is really great about this manga is the characters' development, which is subtle, delicate, realistic, sweet, and endearing. It's like a candy you enjoy licking bit by bit with delight. And what's more, the artwork is beautiful and very sweet. I just regret a litlle bit there isn't more hot stuff, but it's not very important in this case.

So, it's true it may not be the usual type of shounen ai / yaoi, due to this way of treating more the characters than the plot, but it's very well done and it's actually what makes it interesting in my opinion. So I really recommend this to read.

Too Short

It felt incomplete and the ending left me dissatisfied.

I really wish that brothers were reunited. It implies that they will be soon, but it isn't shown. I had a lot of unanswered questions. Also, I wish Nana regained his memory. I really wanted to know who he really was in the past.

i can see why this might appear confusing, but the bit in the middle is not a random oneshot. let me explain:

mitsuha from story 1 lost contact with his brother nanao (nanao-2) when nanao-2 was just 3 years old and got adopted. they were both living in an orphanage at that time. later there was a fire at the orphanage and the records got destroyed, which left mitsuha without any clues as to where his brother might be. mitsuha has no permanent home and travels a lot in order to somehow look for his brother, supporting himself with odd jobs and writing. when he meets the blond nanao (nanao-1) in story one, he thinks at first he might be his brother, but that turns out not to be true. however, nanao-1 was in the same orphanage as mitsuha and his brother, except later, and he might have gotten injured in the fire that destroyed the records (that's conjecture; i don't know whether the times work out because we don't know exactly how old everyone is). the dark-haired nanao from story 2 IS mitsuha's brother, who was adopted by hiromu's family at age 3; 17 years ago. both mitsuha and hiromu go to the orphanage at different times to find out whether they know anything more about nanao-2. hiromu finds out nanao-2's brother's name and that he is the writer nanao-2 has taken such an interest in lately. nanao-2 does remember his brother, because he recognised the name on the books mitsuha wrote. but he didn't get in contact because it would have felt like ingratitude towards his adoptive family.

i really liked this setup; it's complex and interesting. at the end i knew enough to be sort of satisfied -- both brothers have found partners, and there will be resolution for mitsuha's long search, which is why the ending works for me. but as others have said, yes, too short, and i want more development. i figured out the connections between story 1+3 and story 2, but there's so much more i want to know. still, i'm rating this manga high because it really fascinated me, and i read it several times to milk every piece of information out of it. and i connected to the characters. this is probably my favourite work of tenzen's at this time despite its shortcomings (it certainly made me think the most).

Great Artwork but...

While the main story, concerning Nana and Mitsuha were good, the only reason to really pick up this manga would be for the artist, Tenzen-sensei. While I love her work, this one felt more then slight rushed in pretty much every way.

The main couple had many plots/loose threads that were either left unanswered or ignored completely. It felt like the story had started off as an intricate, engaging premise that ended up being mutilated on the cutting room floor to fit into a "box that was way too small", as it were. Nothing feels finished, and the entire time I read it I felt like I wanted to care about the characters and what happened to them, but the main problem is Tenzen-sensei never touches, more then briefly on their past. To sum it up: confusing, way too short, more loose threads then I care to think about and an ending that just seemed to "stop". It wasn't a depressing ending by any means, it just... seemed to stop on a "monotonous happy note".

Not to mention the fact that, randomly, I think she (the mangaka) inserted a random one-shot (or two) somewhere in the middle, without warning. The characters looked the same, and had similar if not the same names, and the only reason I found out it was a separate story was the total confusion (after reading it) and the vastly different setting.

Overall, this book confused me, and I had read it a more then a couple times. This isn't the best work that Tenzen-sensei has published, so unless you are a die-hard fan of her work, I suggest you flip through it at the store and pass up the book entirely. She has other yaoi manga titles that are much better then this, and less confusing to boot.

Engaging Premise; Pretty, Soft Art

...but lacking in follow through. The story is good - good enough that I CARED that it wasn't developed well.

If a story doesn't catch my interest, I don't even finish it. (You don't have to drink the whole keg, to know the beer sucks balls -lol), This one I gobbled up the entire soft and delicate art and story, but was frustrated with the sum of the whole. And the drama of the physical relationship was aggrevatingly undertold and under illustrated.

i agree with otakubaybay, i wish the two of them met. and other then that, this is more of a shounen ai not really a yaoi. there is one page of...maybe its considered yaoi, but it wasnt even the main focus and only had one main character, i dont think you even saw the other guys face. but this was a cute manga, just wish it was longer. ^^

Too short!

This is a fantastic manga. I love the drawings and the story and the character development are fantastic. The only problem was that the story ended too soon! We need another volume or 2 or 3 to really complete things. More questions are raised than are resolved in this story. At the end of the story I was left needing to know more. This is why I gave this an 8 instead of a 10.

I loved this manga! I just wish they showed Nanao and Mitsuha meeting 🙁 ...but that's it! I loved the story; I almost cried! What originally convinced me to buy this manga was the cover...the uke's expression on the cover is one of the most beautiful ones I've ever seen! It doesn't look so good from far away, but up close it's amazing! And I wasn't disappointed with this manga at all, except the one part I mentioned above...
