Fluffy Office Romance

Minazuki Yuu’s works from 2015 on are consistently good: she takes simple slice-of-life plots and elevates them with emotionally realistic characters, developed with a subtle touch that makes even prickly personalities relatable and ultimately likeable. Earlier works are more hit-and-miss, with cliche premises overshadowing character development (convenient amnesia in Toki no Maigo wo Sagashite!, slapstick step-brother love in Otouto ja Irarenai!!) and questionable consent (sexual assault and coercion between adolescents in Joker no Amai Uso).

Luckily, Wonderful Lover is on the “hit” side. The character development is more exaggerated/less realistic and less consistent compared to later works, occasionally jarringly so (it sometimes feels that Shimura’s personality changes based on plot demands, rather than feeling like the plot progresses naturally based on how he would act given his personality), but the protagonists (and main side character) are ultimately likeable and reasonably emotionally complex given that this is only a two-volume series. Overall, it’s a fluffy office romance with a cute dog, a love triangle, and characters whose happiness you want to root for.

While I felt embarrassed at the awkwardness of some scenes (not necessarily because they were bad per se, I just personally dislike seeing certain kinds of scenarios which are meant to be humorous), there were some lines/scenes that stuck with me, especially

Kosaka hearing Shimura say “How could I not love that person, when she’s the one I chose?” and realizing that he could trust his romantic partner if it was Shimura. On reflection, there’s quite a lot of different love perspectives wrapped up in this series, and the depictions of ! what it means to continue loving someone and wishing for their happiness when they love someone else, as well as loving someone because you chose them and made a committment to love them have some of the warmth and sensitivity that sensei has developed in her later works.
