Amazing - just an overall solid read with an interesting plot and developing characters

The female lead is very naive but also physically capable which I appreciate - her nativity is used for comedic effect sometimes throughout the story but I feel like it's fairly realistic for someone who grew up in her circumstances (I find it frustrating at times but not overly ridiculous especially because the male lead is also emotionally dense)
On the male lead- he is extremely flawed and I think a lot of people take issue with that (which is fair) but if you're someone who can handle leads who do terrible things and are somewhat oblivious you're in for a treat
I truly love the way they match each other so well

(Also - somewhat off topic but - lately I'm so sick of seeing large age gaps in stories and I truly appreciate that even though we don't know their specific ages they seem near each other in age
He is a student and we see him in his school uniform a lot so I figure he's in his teens - and
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
she gets her period at one point - and it's mentioned it seems late for it to be the first one - keeping in mind the average age for this has gotten lower and lower over time
she could be around 15/16
Not to say the story is entirely wholesome because the characters and circumstances are often morally wrong)

I wish I had held off on starting this manga and just waited until it was completed because it's killing me not being able to immediately finish it (I feel like there's a long way to go)
I'm so grateful to the scan team for their amazing work - shoutout träumerei scans - they are my saviours

IF YOU LOVE COMPLEX AND FUCKED ROMANCE, DO I HAVE THE THING FOR YOU.

Just finished binging all eight translated volumes, excuse my enthusiasm. *Ahem*.
Man. This manga is seriously fantastic though. The scanlation team (Traumerei Scans) is phenomenal. The story is so solid.

The thing that stands out for me with this manga is that it's believable. It's not the kind of manga that exaggerates the severity of the situation - it doesn't serve false danger. The dangers the MC encounters are real, and the insanity of the Tendou household is as well. The scale makes me think of Hunter x Hunter and the Zoldycks. Of course, this one is less fantastical due to the lack of magic/fantasy elements present in this work, but the presence is absolutely there. Also, not the kind of manga which has the MC start off from a disadvantaged point and automatically gain every skill and virtue under the sun in 5 seconds. The MC is dumb and I'm so here for it. She's so cute and dumb and I'm GLAD because it's not a bad thing.

Beyond that, its characterization also feels very appropriate to the situation these characters are wound up in. No one is perfect. The male lead, female lead, the characters they're surrounded by all have their flaws and are unconventional in their own ways. The shading pairs so well with the text in delivering some seriously eerie moments which remind me of Junji Ito, who I haven't read but recall certain stills/caps from.

The story expresses loss and grief so, so well, and in such a heartbreaking fashion...I really cried with the MC
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
where her grandpa was concerned, her motivations for putting her life on the line...just the desperate desire she had to be reunited with the only family that she has and loves.
While this story isn't just trauma fuel, the way it handles loss and the extreme stance the MC takes reminds me of the manga Reiri which gave me a similar, if wayyy more brutal, punch to the gut.

LAST BUT NOT LEAST. The romance. For me, I really enjoy the slow pacing the story has going. It leaves an appropriate amount of time for a bond to develop between the FL and ML, as well as time for the dynamics within that bond to shift and change. It starts off fucked as hell in the best way lol, authority figure versus small, abandoned girl who has more to her than meets the eye but isn't given luxury treatment regardless of the fact. Their dynamic remains the cold, cruel (SLEAZY) keeper and his charge. ML remains twisted for a decent portion, although it's clear the influence the FL gradually has on him, especially with the presence of Tachi. Things become softer between them and he treats her more like a friend/pet/playmate at times, although even in later volumes, he's still possessive and domineering as all hell lol. The difference is that he begins to listen to her more, to care...

it's 4AM and I've only established like one or two of the things I had going in my head but. If you love romance with themes of authority and dubious circumstances, this is definitely the one for you!

She's so dumb

The art is lovely and the plot is intriguing...but it moves so slowly it's like nothing happened at all. There's a whole mystery surrounding the Tendou family, but as of ch 21, we're still only getting the tiniest glimpse of what exactly the mystery is beside everybody in the family being completely messed up. I had high hopes because of the strong female lead tag, but I am suuuuper disappointed! She can fight, but she's so dumb it practically negates itself. You'd think that she'd be able to rescue herself from situations, but the ML still somehow ends up coming to save her.

She also has practically no character development. In the beginning she wants to die to meet her grandfather again. And at ch21, she's only just transferred her willingness to die to ML. And the point is she still wants to die. I get that she could be diagnosed with depression, but it doesn't exactly come across that way in the manga. Sometimes her stupidity is cute, but really. After 20 chapters it gets a little tiring. When someone wants to kill her or the ML, she'll still protect them from getting killed in turn. Because she wants to die.

The ML...also has really slow development, but at least we see more from him than from her. You can tell he's starting to reluctantly have feelings for MC, but his twisted family situation isn't really helping. And she's not helping in that point at all besides sometimes kicking some timely ass. At this point, there should be no romantic subplot and just make the whole manga from the ML's pov because it'd be more interesting with actual intelligence in the main character.

I LOVE IT GAAAHHH

not you regular shoujo, thats for sure. I would label that guy as a yandere. Gaaah, i am really lazy to write this kind of thing, but really, my favorite shoujo so far, and i have read A LOT of shoujos. Is not a sweet cliche love story. Is actually dreadful and morbid in a beatiful way, and all the characters are twisted, messed up in the head, with all of then with their own reasons. The girl is pretty badass fighting too, and is not just (nor mainly I belive) a love story. I agree in a lot of ways with ohkimch, but since I like very much crazy male leads, I liked the guy. I really liked him, just like all the cast of characters. I truly recommend. If you know how to read in spanish, the scarlett scanlations has translated until chap 9 I belive.

I have mixed feelings about this series, based on the four chapters I've read. On one hand, the female lead is so pure, honest, innocent and naive, while also being physically strong, self-sacrificing, martially adept. But she also has the self preservation instincts of a depressed lemming, absolutely no sense of self-worth (she really places no value on her own life/self at all) and is just incredibly dense. She is still, by any measure, a Good person though.

The male lead though. He is very, very twisted. Which is pretty normal for a shoujo male lead (unfortunately). Male leads in historical shoujo have the tendency of coming off as arrogant, abusive, overprivileged, possessive, chauvinistic a**holes. But, like...

On one hand, he injured himself to keep someone from killing themselves in from of him. On the other hand,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
he basically told them to kill themself, even if he didn't expect them to carry through.
On one hand, he shelters this girl, gifts her with nice clothes, treats her with care(?). On the other,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
he is holding her against her will with threats, even as she asks him to let her go home.
On one hand, he lets her go home, where most shoujo male leads would've kept the girl until she developed Stockholm Syndrome, fell in love, and fulfilled his whimsy of geting her as devoted to him as she is to her grandfather bc it's 'interesting' by force. On the other hand,
Spoiler (mouse over to view)
he BURNS HER HOUSE DOWN so she has no choice but to return to him
. On one hand, he is pretty. And rich. On the other, he is morally reprehensible, ugly on the inside (regardless of what circumstances have made him this way), and manipulative AF in a way that will undoubtedly be harmful to the female lead.

I'm going to keep reading because I think i like the female lead, but...the male lead...Leaves much to be desired.
